This thread got me to watch AMERICAN RUST. Watched the first 2 episodes and totally hooked! I don't get why the series hasn't gotten more attention. Wonderfully written and directed and cast. And David is terrific in it.

Was his character a boxer in the original stage version? I was glad they made him that in the movie, even though it was strange Tony was still able to beat him up in the fight. It made his physique more believable, because the only men in the world who have physiques like that are ballet dancers, boxers, and rock climbers.

Yes! Really brilliant in American Rust playing a shy gay nerd, couldn't be further from his Bernardo in West Side Story. Shame he didn't get more attention for that role. I really enjoyed that series and just don't get why the reviews for it were generally not very good.

I thought the acting in American Rust was uniformly excellent, R60, but it was just so relentlessly grim.

I think the reasoning for it was that Tony voters would've needed to see Billy Elliot three times if the kids were nominated individually, and once is torturous enough. Though I suppose there would be some entertainment value in hearing three different awful attempts at a Geordie accent.

I hate to prick your bubble, R83, but I work in musical theatre and there are quite a few straight guys in the biz -even dancers. While it's a hopeful sign, it's not a sure thing.
