What would you do? Covid edition
I'm supposed to meet some friends for lunch tomorrow but I am worried about omicron. I had covid after my second shot of Pfizer and I've also had the booster. Still, I am worried about catching it and then spreading it to my elderly parents later this week at Christmas. Another friend was exposed at a dinner party last night and every time I turn on the tv another seemingly responsible person has come down with it.
Do you think I am being melodramatic to pass on lunch? I'm sure I'm not the only one facing decisions like this this week.

If you’re determined to visit your elderly parents, then reschedule the lunch for 2022.
I think yours is a bullshit post though. What do you mean your friend was exposed last night? Did he run off to get a rapid test today or what?

I feel the same way OP. I’m guessing I’ll have to postpone my trip to see my elderly parents unless I’m able to time the testing perfectly and get the results on time.
I’m still waiting on a test from Thursday morning.
I wouldn’t do lunch if you’re set on visiting.

The host got tested today and called the guests. I assume that he got a rapid test. They are readily available. I bought a few this weekend myself to have on hand, and most people I know have done the same. If I were going to make up a story, it wouldn't be one as boring as this.
Thanks, r1 and r2 for your responses. I will reschedule.

My partner’s family is still planning to get together for Christmas. All vaccinated (I think) and some boosted, but several millennials who are out all the time…and his parents who are in their 80s. I think it’s a bad idea, but they are all still hell bent at this point to get together.

Skip lunch. You can reschedule after you see your parents. It's not worth the risk. And I say that from your parent's point of view.

I cancelled theater tickets this week to The Music Man, which were hard to get. But I'm going to visit my father who is 100, and I just can't get infected.

I'm actually thinking of canceling Christmas dinner with a friend. He's also bringing along another friend whom I've never met. Even though I'm fully vaxxed and boosted, I was thinking maybe I don't want to go sit in a crowded restaurant this year. I think I'd much rather just stay home, watch TV, and order in something.
I'll decide between now and Wednesday.

OP, you have the highest level of immunity, which is hybrid or so called “super immunity.” Vax plus infection produces up to 1000 times the antibodies of two does. In your case, you’ve even been boosted.
You’ll be fine, but you’re likely going to worry about it anyway so maybe skip the lunch. That said, you really will be fine.

What R8 said. I’d go to lunch and then do a rapid test before seeing my parents.

I would not go. Vaccines do not prevent infection with Omnicron. You might not get very sick, but the person you infect might.

Don't go. Reschedule the lunch for January.
Now is the time to practice an abundance of caution when visiting people who are vulnerable, like the elderly or immunocompromised.
For added peace of mind, you could take a rapid test before you visit your parents. Order them from Amazon now, though; they're selling out.

If you ever get Covid again, you're either the unluckiest person on the planet or you need to be studied.

r12, I am pretty damn unlucky. I bought four rapid tests this weekend in case I need them. The worst part of getting covid was having to track down a testing appointment when I felt so sick. It sounds like it's even harder to schedule testing now.

It's rare but some people don't develop antibodies even if they aren't on immune suppressing drugs

My brother had both his Pfizer vaccines by June, caught Covid in August, didn’t get a booster, and then just caught Covid again last week. So it can happen. I don’t think he knows whether this most recent bout is Omicron variant but I’m sure that’s likely.

Skip lunch. Do a self-test before you see your parents. Have a Merry Christmas.

Don’t do it. I work in an urgent care clinic. More and more positives every day. Lots of sick people. Everyone’s guard is down.

Make that, do several self tests before you see your parents.

Interesting that you all are able to buy Rapid Tests.
They are completely sold out in many parts of the country and/or sell out within hours of getting restocked.

If you plan to visit your parents stay home and isolate yourself until then.

Covid is as deadly as the seasonal flu. You're in a psych op OP. Wake up.

I have one rapid test left over from buying a kit before Thanksgiving. I’m saving it for testing before spending Christmas with my family. It’s really nuts that we don’t have better nationwide access to rapid tests.

I backed out of a brunch on the 23rd then everyone else did as well. Not worth the risk.

I am in Houston and I found some at CVS. I will probably go pick up a few more in a little while.

Cancelled Xmas Eve dinner at one friend's house, cancelled Xmas Day get together with family. Triple vaxx'd, but don't want to deal with this now, even if it's only just like "a mild flu." Not worth it. Maybe the wave of Omicron will fade unexpectedly, like it seems to have done in South Africa already.

South Africa told us from the start this was a big fat nothing.

Just learned that my 44yo nephew in Chicago was diagnosed with covid today. He's double vaxed and had his booster about 5 weeks ago. Always wears a mask. His kids are all back to in-person classes and his wife is a special ed teacher's aide, so classrooms may have been the route. The rest of his family and in-laws are getting tested tomorrow.

I just received an NYC COVID alerts on my phone saying I may have been exposed to someone today. First time I've ever received one of those alerts. I can only assume it happened when I went out to Duane Reade this afternoon where I stood in line for about 10 minutes. Oh, well, what can you do? I have a rapid test here (bought it a couple of months ago) that I was keeping for just such an emergency. I will test myself in the morning and see what it comes up with. Thankfully, I'm fully vaccinated and boosted, too.

How did you get an alert if all you did was go to Duane Reade R28?

OP do you have Omicron yet?

R28 you should isolate and wait at least 48 hours after exposure before you test.
