They just did a piece on 60 Minutes on this

It is quite shocking the Kay Ivey (Republican Governor) hasn't lifted a finger to help people get indoor plumbing - and they blast China for bad hygiene practices in their lab

People in Alabama are living like how those in Haiti are living

R3 They have indoor plumbing they just rely on septic tanks to dispose of their waste. I grew up in the country where all we had was septic tanks for waste and wells for water. The problem with septic tanks is that you have to maintain them, which might be difficult for poorer people. Depending upon the size of the tank and the size of your family you have to get it pumped out every so often, and you have to be careful about how much bleach and cleaners you let go down the drains, etc... And, they can get flooded during heavy rains, like is described in the article R2.

Where I grew up, the closest city wanted to extend water and sewer lines, but the rural residents voted NO. Because they didn't want to pay for water and sewer by the month, and would prefer to rely on themselves.

Up north the sewer bill is five times the water bill and they’re combined. An average family pays about $700 every three months, this is a small seaside town outside Boston. There’s no fix for poor people, they’ll take your home if you don’t pay it.

F—k the ignorant hillbillies. They will still vote for me. Why spend money on them?

by Anonymousreply 6December 20, 2021 1:15 AM

We have wells and septic tanks in the Rockies and I wouldn't have it any other way. Have fun getting fucked with city/county water and sanitation bills. Our water is chemical free and the septic tank is easy to maintain.

You need a special septic tank that costs upwards of $25k to install and hook up in lower Alabama.

Septic systems are actually ecologically better .
