Is Ansel Elgort’s Career Over?

I can’t see him recovering from this West Side Story flop, especially when he’s blamed for it.

by Anonymousreply 202April 11, 2022 4:09 AM

In a year or two he can be on

Dancing with the Stars

by Anonymousreply 1December 19, 2021 9:30 PM

He's too connected no to keep getting work. God that is face you want to slap that smirk off.

by Anonymousreply 2December 19, 2021 9:35 PM

These days you really need stars to open a film.

by Anonymousreply 3December 19, 2021 9:36 PM

[QUOTE] He's too connected no to keep getting work.

That’s how he gets all his roles. Eventually it has to end.

by Anonymousreply 4December 19, 2021 9:38 PM

Most of those Marvel people aren't stars. Musicals are just a gamble. They have long been.

by Anonymousreply 5December 19, 2021 9:39 PM

He has the face for a character actor anyway.

by Anonymousreply 6December 19, 2021 9:41 PM

[quote] He's too connected no to keep getting work.

Plus, young, white, and cute. I cant take anyone seriously who blames him for a movie that was one misstep after another, the primary one: this isn’t a movie anyone was clamoring to see. There’s no actor in his age range who could’ve done more for the box office.

by Anonymousreply 7December 19, 2021 9:41 PM

I think so, yes. Don't forget The Goldfinch was also a huge bomb. No one wants to see his smug, arrogant face on the big screen and the fact that he's a notorious douchebag doesn't help his case. Nor does the receding hairline or the wooden acting.

by Anonymousreply 8December 19, 2021 9:41 PM

Shawn Mendes?

by Anonymousreply 9December 19, 2021 9:42 PM

I think he's handsome in a non-stereotypical way but he just has NO charisma.

He should stick to playing meek retards like in Baby Driver.

by Anonymousreply 10December 19, 2021 9:43 PM

R7 = Ansel Elgort’s agent

by Anonymousreply 11December 19, 2021 9:44 PM

Baby driver and Fault in our stars were huge hits. The problem is the rape allegations. Some people will never let that go and will raise a stink anytime he’s cast in something.

by Anonymousreply 12December 19, 2021 9:44 PM

It might have done better with Harry Styles, though he's not remotely a tenor.

by Anonymousreply 13December 19, 2021 9:45 PM

I say Ansel needs to play gay to save his career!

by Anonymousreply 14December 19, 2021 9:45 PM

He already had a reputation as a dickhead prior to the allegations.

by Anonymousreply 15December 19, 2021 9:45 PM

I still don't understand why Spielberg cast him.

Still, I really don't think Elgort is the reason why WSS is a flop. He may be one of the factors but the film has other issues, like the fact that it's a remake and a musical. There was no demand for this movie.

by Anonymousreply 16December 19, 2021 9:46 PM

R7 Just about anyone could have brought in more teen girls. Douglas Booth, for example. Does he sing? Probably at least as well as Ansel and much better looking. And no rape allegations.

by Anonymousreply 17December 19, 2021 9:46 PM

No. Douglas Booth has never gained a following.

by Anonymousreply 18December 19, 2021 9:46 PM

[QUOTE] I still don't understand why Spielberg cast him.

I think Spielberg was sexually attracted to him.

by Anonymousreply 19December 19, 2021 9:48 PM

I'm pretty sure Disney just didn't want this to succeed. Releasing it a week before Spiderman killed any potential for it to have a Greatest Showman type slowburn. It's like this is something they got stuck with after buying Fox and are just clearing the slates.

by Anonymousreply 20December 19, 2021 9:48 PM

[quote] like the fact that it's a remake

Bullshit. Its being a remake has nothing to do with it.

by Anonymousreply 21December 19, 2021 9:49 PM

R16 The bigger issue was casting an unlikeable nobody as Maria.

by Anonymousreply 22December 19, 2021 9:55 PM

So wait, being Speilberg's boytoy wasn't enough for him?

by Anonymousreply 23December 19, 2021 9:56 PM

Noting worse than a boring average looking white guy getting big roles. You hear that, Adam Driver. But eventually they make so many box office bombs that the parts dry up. Right, Jon Hamm?

by Anonymousreply 24December 19, 2021 9:58 PM

Encanto more than doubled WSS at the box office this weekend. Is it too late to add english captions??

by Anonymousreply 25December 19, 2021 9:58 PM

[Quote] The bigger issue was casting an unlikeable nobody as Maria.

Rita Moreno doesn't play Maria, silly.

by Anonymousreply 26December 19, 2021 9:58 PM

Adam Driver isn't most people's idea of white.

by Anonymousreply 27December 19, 2021 9:58 PM

What the hell do most people see when they look at him then, R27?

by Anonymousreply 28December 19, 2021 10:08 PM

What other bombs has he had?

by Anonymousreply 29December 19, 2021 10:21 PM

R23 What? I am surprised Spielberg can still get it up....

by Anonymousreply 30December 19, 2021 10:43 PM

R27 He's fugly white.

by Anonymousreply 31December 19, 2021 10:44 PM

R29 Everything since Baby Driver in 2017 has been a dud: November Criminals (2017), Jonathan (2018), Billionaire Boys Club (2018), The Goldfinch (2019), and now West Side Story (2021).

by Anonymousreply 32December 19, 2021 11:04 PM

He's a total product of nepotism and connections, the public has never had any love for him.

by Anonymousreply 33December 19, 2021 11:12 PM

R33 Not entirely true, since he was quite good in breakout role in The Fault in Our Stars and acquired a fanbase from that performance.

by Anonymousreply 34December 19, 2021 11:19 PM

Yeah, like ten people. The rest of the population never took to him. He's not a star.

by Anonymousreply 35December 19, 2021 11:24 PM

[quote] this isn’t a movie anyone was clamoring to see.

Other than the superhero movies, what movie is anyone clamoring for?

by Anonymousreply 36December 19, 2021 11:26 PM

R36 Then Ansel needs to get himself a superhero movie role! Get on it, agents of nepotism!

by Anonymousreply 37December 20, 2021 12:13 AM

It was a mistake to release this movie now. It could have done much better at drawing an older audience (who remember the original) if it hadn’ t been released in winter when everyone has been told that coronavirus will become a bigger problem again. Older people aren’t going to flock to watch this under the current circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 38December 20, 2021 12:23 AM

Do you mean to tell me there was someone else in this film aside from Rita “Look at ME!” Moreno?

by Anonymousreply 39December 20, 2021 12:24 AM

If she weren't dead, Natalie Wood be in the film.

by Anonymousreply 40December 20, 2021 12:43 AM

Over my dead body R40

by Anonymousreply 41December 20, 2021 12:45 AM

[QUOTE] It could have done much better at drawing an older audience (who remember the original) if it hadn’ t been released in winter when everyone has been told that coronavirus will become a bigger problem again.

They could’ve released it on July 4th, and it still would’ve flopped.

by Anonymousreply 42December 20, 2021 4:16 PM

I know this will make eldergays take to their fainting couches, but West Side Story is an old, old musical from ages ago and it's pretty dated. I'm in my forties and have never seen it, like many people my age. If people my age have no interest, imagine the lack of interest Millennials/Gen Z have about it.

by Anonymousreply 43December 20, 2021 5:00 PM

Dont be surprised if he does something else like photography or producing films. He had almost 5 years of flops that most actors coildnt survive. His last hope is getting into a comic book movie.

by Anonymousreply 44December 20, 2021 5:06 PM

R43 If you're in your forties, why are you talking about eldergays like you aren't one?

by Anonymousreply 45December 20, 2021 5:09 PM

R44 He's already branching out from movies. He's starring in a streaming series Tokyo Vice for HBO Max coming in 2022.

by Anonymousreply 46December 20, 2021 5:17 PM

I don’t disagree with people’s criticisms of Ansel Elgort, but I would still lick his shitter

by Anonymousreply 47December 20, 2021 5:27 PM

Even the intended audience didn’t want to see this film. My grandparents took me to see the original West Side Story when it came out. They love musicals. This remake was targeted towards them. But they aren’t going to go see this. They said they have no desire to.

by Anonymousreply 48December 20, 2021 5:42 PM

He needs to pull an Ellen Page to revive his career and come out as a trans woman . Then he'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 49December 20, 2021 5:45 PM

[quote]If you're in your forties, why are you talking about eldergays like you aren't one?

On DL, forties means you're practically a twink

by Anonymousreply 50December 20, 2021 5:52 PM

Let's face it, the public is tired of these dancing musicals. They didn't like In The Heights, either.

by Anonymousreply 51December 20, 2021 6:05 PM

[quote] I think Spielberg was sexually attracted to him.

I think Spielberg saw himself in Elgort, who kinda looks like a better looking version of Spielberg as a young man.

by Anonymousreply 52December 20, 2021 6:08 PM

No one's grandparents who were alive in 1961 are still around in 2021.

by Anonymousreply 53December 20, 2021 6:29 PM

Why not? Not everyone has old grandparents.

by Anonymousreply 54December 20, 2021 6:36 PM

Do the math.

by Anonymousreply 55December 20, 2021 6:44 PM

[Quote] Why not? Not everyone has old grandparents.

Grandparents in 1961 are D.E.D. dead in 2021.

by Anonymousreply 56December 20, 2021 6:45 PM

His fate lies in Baby Driver 2. If that movie gets cancelled, he’s done.

He hasn’t had a big career so it’s not like he was some box office star and he’s not in any comic book movies so I don’t see why Hollywood would have no issue dumping him.

by Anonymousreply 57December 20, 2021 6:58 PM

Maybe a remake of "Shampoo"?

by Anonymousreply 58December 20, 2021 7:01 PM

He just isn't special.

by Anonymousreply 59December 20, 2021 7:21 PM

He has beady little eyes and looks like a rooster.

by Anonymousreply 60December 20, 2021 7:24 PM

Sensual lips, though.

by Anonymousreply 61December 20, 2021 7:26 PM

He’s very good looking.

by Anonymousreply 62December 20, 2021 8:36 PM

R28 Jewface.

by Anonymousreply 63December 20, 2021 9:40 PM

He needs to show the dong in his next movie

by Anonymousreply 64December 20, 2021 9:49 PM

R63 Adam Driver is not even a little bit Jewish. Check Wiki if you wish to research further.

by Anonymousreply 65December 20, 2021 9:57 PM

Adam Driver is not pretty, but he has a hunky body, and an air of danger. And he is a very good actor.

by Anonymousreply 66December 21, 2021 1:57 AM

Adam Driver has masculine energy and appeal

by Anonymousreply 67December 21, 2021 1:47 PM

It doesn't bode well for Ansel that he can't even maintain the focus of this thread. People are more interested in discussing Adam Driver.

by Anonymousreply 68December 21, 2021 2:15 PM

Adam is more masculine than Ansel. Ansel has a weak body with girly shoulders, so these DL bottoms aren’t really attracted to him.

by Anonymousreply 69December 21, 2021 4:05 PM

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 70December 21, 2021 4:26 PM

I knew WSS was in trouble when the teasers and ads tied to hide that it was a musical.

by Anonymousreply 71December 21, 2021 4:42 PM

Adam Driver is ugly as fuck and a very limited, one-note actor. I honestly don't get the hoopla.

by Anonymousreply 72December 21, 2021 4:42 PM

[quote]I knew WSS was in trouble when the teasers and ads tied to hide that it was a musical.

A big hide to hide. Like trying to hide that 'Schindler's List' was about The Holocaust.

by Anonymousreply 73December 21, 2021 6:00 PM

Well, they didn’t show anyone dancing or singing.

by Anonymousreply 74December 21, 2021 6:02 PM

R65 You don’t have to be an actual jew to have jewface, Rose!

by Anonymousreply 75December 21, 2021 6:42 PM

r3 I thought the opposite was thought to be the case and the day of individual stars having the power to pull in a box office audience was over?

Rita wasn't a grandparent in 1961. Someone said their grandparent took them to see the original when it came out.

[quote]Is Ansel Elgort’s Career Over?

He had a career?

by Anonymousreply 81December 24, 2021 12:51 AM

Do you not see that he’s the star of this movie, R81? A major motion picture that costs hundreds of millions of dollars to produce and market? I’d say that yes, he has a career.

by Anonymousreply 82December 24, 2021 4:22 PM

Hopefully. Audiences can only stand the bland for so long before their fill.

by Anonymousreply 83December 24, 2021 6:49 PM

I mean, he’s hot. I’m sure he’ll make for a dreamy romantic Tony when I watch the movie hungover on a Saturday morning in a few months on Hulu. Zero interest in going to the theater for this though.

Hopefully he and his meaty dong can have a second career on OnlyFans

His career reminds me of the infamous article about Armie Hammer pointing out that his career was a series of flops and second (and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth) chances that he didn’t deserve and other people wouldn’t get. Ansel is another one who “looks like a star” to some execs who don’t seem to understand that audiences care about talent and charisma just as much, if not more. Funny that Ansel seems to have some of the same personal problems as Armie as well.

by Anonymousreply 89December 25, 2021 10:40 AM

He tore that pussy up!

by Anonymousreply 90December 25, 2021 10:53 AM

He was guilty of being an asshole and treating a girl badly. Something 100 percent of hot young straight actors have done.

He did nothing wrong.

by Anonymousreply 91December 25, 2021 11:01 AM

I watched at a friends home theater last night….she has a screener and her 15 year old daughter and a 40 year old friend both had no desire to see the film after seeing the previews yet were both enthralled/mesmerized by the film….I think too many marketing types assumed the whole under 40’s audience knew what WSS story was….and the trailers didn’t help. I enjoyed it….it was a refreshing update…I wasn’t sure what to expect from Mike Faist as RIff after seeing him as Connor in DEAR EVAN HANSEN but his was one of the stronger performances…

by Anonymousreply 92December 25, 2021 11:06 AM

The movie was a flop because some of the cunt actresses made shady comments about Natalie Wood on the 40th anniversary of her death. God has a way of making things right in the end.

by Anonymousreply 93December 25, 2021 11:23 AM

'Even the intended audience didn’t want to see this film. My grandparents took me to see the original West Side Story when it came out. They love musicals. This remake was targeted towards them. But they aren’t going to go see this. They said they have no desire to.'

One of the most ridiculous things I've read on DL.

by Anonymousreply 94December 25, 2021 11:32 AM

When I heard they made a remake of WSS, my first thought was, Why? There was no way it would be as good as the original. Then I heard this version would be more faithful to the original Broadway play I was intrigued. The trailer looked promising, so I decided to see it and I loved it. The new WSS is actually better than the 1961 film version. I'm not sure how they could have marketed it better. In the Heights also was well received critically, but did not do well at the box office. It seems audiences will venture out during COVID for Marvel movies but not for well made musicals.

by Anonymousreply 95December 25, 2021 11:38 AM

How about a re-make of Carrie where he plays Tommy Ross.

Oh wait a minute, his done that and it was shit.

by Anonymousreply 96December 25, 2021 11:44 AM

[quote] One of the most ridiculous things I've read on DL.

Why? Fans of the original really did not have a desire to see this.

[quote] His career reminds me of the infamous article about Armie Hammer pointing out that his career was a series of flops and second (and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth) chances that he didn’t deserve and other people wouldn’t get.

Ansel has this preppy WASP look rich people (like, Hollywood Studio execs) might find appealing, but the average mainstream Joe considers him a douche bro. His main demographic were girls falling for such guys, but that died when #MeToo turned him into a player and a creep.

by Anonymousreply 98December 25, 2021 7:16 PM

1. I think the production of this movie took way too long, and it took out the edge off of the release.

2. It got mixed up with the Broadway revival which meant too much WSS too soon.

3. It was released during a worldwide pandemic.

Three strikes against it before it was ever even seen.

by Anonymousreply 99December 25, 2021 7:52 PM

This is a case where the actors name is everything. If this guy was named Joe Smith he would be a model for target clothes.

by Anonymousreply 100December 25, 2021 7:53 PM

Are we pretending Ansel Elgort is a hot and sexy name?

by Anonymousreply 101December 25, 2021 7:54 PM

No but to the rubes it gives him a sense of mystique and cache. Hollywood loves a good quirky name, because the masses lap it up.

by Anonymousreply 102December 25, 2021 7:58 PM

He was actually good in WSS. I went in with low expectations for him and came away pleasantly surprised.

Of course Tony is a pretty thankless role and Faist and Debose absolutely stole the movie.

by Anonymousreply 103December 26, 2021 2:35 AM

Totally over.

Yes.

Thanks God.

by Anonymousreply 104December 26, 2021 6:44 PM

I don't fancy him, but he looks so good on OP picture.

by Anonymousreply 105December 26, 2021 7:42 PM

He's really flat in WSS. He's completely unconvincing as a boy with a violent past who now has the hots for a young girl. He stares at her blankly in the close-ups. He makes Richard Beymer feel like an astounding actor.

by Anonymousreply 106December 26, 2021 11:21 PM

(R57) Sorry, but Baby Driver 2 or 3, isn’t saving his bland ass.

by Anonymousreply 110December 27, 2021 12:17 AM

Is Rita pitching herself for a second Oscar for a remake of the film she won her first Oscar? Silly question, of course she is. However, has Hollywood come to the realization she's not the easiest person to satisfy (unless she could somehow now have Natalie Wood's career or deal with?

by Anonymousreply 111December 27, 2021 12:23 AM

Why would an Oscar winner want the career of a mere Oscar nominee?

by Anonymousreply 112December 27, 2021 12:26 AM

Natalie should have won the Oscar for Splendor in the Grass.

by Anonymousreply 123December 29, 2021 7:22 AM

I think he needs to push the envelope even further. By being the sperm recipient of a Bukkake.

Haters will love the humiliating aspect, and others will find his performance either off-putting or daring. Think Jennifer Connelly's ass-to-ass in Requiem For A Dream (body double or no body double).

by Anonymousreply 125December 29, 2021 9:45 AM

I think WSS was a bucket list project for Spielberg, which he thinks he's doing as a public service. It might be a great movie for all I know but the infection rate in my city is 16 percent and I don't want to roll the dice. I would have happily paid 20. to screen it at homee.

I saw West Side Story last week (never saw the original) and I loved it. Ansel was good and his singing was excellent—everyone's was, actually, to the extent I wondered if it might have been significantly engineered.

He's getting a lot of hatred here but he was excellent in West Side Story.

I think he looks so out of place in West Side Story. And he’s too tall for the girl. It’s awkward when they’re side by side.

by Anonymousreply 132December 31, 2021 6:38 AM

The movie failed because for about 55 years movie musicals have mostly been box office poison.

by Anonymousreply 133December 31, 2021 6:39 AM

This Elgort should go to his synagogue and demand forgiveness for his arrogance and selfishness.

by Anonymousreply 134December 31, 2021 6:46 AM

I had never seen WSS because the snippets I had seen of gangs dance-fighting looked so silly to me, but my dad wanted to see it and so I figured it would be nice to go with him. The fighting scenes were silly indeed—gang members doing pirhouettes with a loaded gun? But Spielberg's direction is meticulous and moving in this one, the jazzy music is wonderful, and the performances are excellent all around. I'm glad I saw it. It's an entertaimment highlight of the year for me, and it's one of few Spielberg movies I have really enjoyed.

by Anonymousreply 135December 31, 2021 6:48 AM

Ansel Elgort sounds like an insect repellent product.

by Anonymousreply 136December 31, 2021 9:32 AM

r131 He's getting hate here for being a sexual predator and an asshole douchebag, good performance notwithstanding.

R135, dance is a figurative not literal.

by Anonymousreply 138December 31, 2021 2:41 PM

[quote]Ansel was good and his singing was excellent

The cast album suggests otherwise.

R2, His face is rather.....Trumpian.

by Anonymousreply 141March 14, 2022 2:22 AM

I think he's hot. Are you all blind, or something?

by Anonymousreply 142March 14, 2022 2:25 AM

R140, I think that’s the last awards show he’ll be invited to for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 143March 14, 2022 2:27 AM

I'm sure someone would pay to fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 144March 14, 2022 2:28 AM

Being Spaceys'pass around wasn't a smart career move for Baby Driver.

by Anonymousreply 145March 14, 2022 2:30 AM

Mr Singer, what do you say? I know he's a bit old for you, but maybe if we cleaned him up properly ...

by Anonymousreply 146March 14, 2022 2:34 AM

r87 I will drink to that!!

r145 Do you think Taron Egerton might have been a Spacey pass around too?

by Anonymousreply 147March 14, 2022 2:36 AM

R147 I think Jackman would have kept Taron thorough satiated. I bet he's quite the sweet boy when fucked out.

by Anonymousreply 148March 14, 2022 2:41 AM

r148 Couldnt they have shared him?!

by Anonymousreply 149March 14, 2022 2:43 AM

R113 Natalie Wood was more deserving of being an Oscar winner than conceited Rita Moreno. Same with Judy Garland. Judy should have won Best Supporting Actress that year instead of Rita.

by Anonymousreply 150March 14, 2022 2:45 AM

Ansel is not special.

by Anonymousreply 151March 14, 2022 3:00 AM

R140 He does not well and looks like he lost a shit load of weight. I think he has an HBO show coming up?

I don’t know what will happen to his career. He is very well connected but there’s going to be a portion of people turned off by him. I read the allegations and they really made my skin crawl. I think of Aziz Ansari, whose story broke right when MeToo first started. I think if those allegations came out today (which seemed like an awkward guy not understanding social cues) the response would have been milder. He still hasn’t made a real comeback and his show was super popular at the time.

by Anonymousreply 152March 14, 2022 3:09 AM

This was not a movie the under 40 crowd had a desire to see.

by Anonymousreply 153March 14, 2022 3:14 AM

R152, Aziz Anzari didn’t lose anything. The allegations got called out as be the second they were put out and he was widely defended.

He never was a huge star to begin with and I believe his show is still in production or at least had another season after me took

by Anonymousreply 154March 14, 2022 3:14 AM

Young people have no idea what WSS even is. Older people would rather just rewatch the original which had a superior cast. The remake completely lacked any star appeal whereas Natalie Wood became a star from that movie. Miss Snow Brown is never going to become big and this flop remake is probably going to be the pinnacle of her career.

by Anonymousreply 155March 14, 2022 3:18 AM

R154 I just checked and your right, but Aziz stepped down from the show and Lena Waithe became the new star. I know he was in the Parks and Rec covid thing but I remember there being a lot of anger online when he had a Netflix special come out. I was in college at the time and he was the biggest comedian for my age group, then John Mulaney swooped in

by Anonymousreply 156March 14, 2022 3:21 AM

R150 Moreno had been around a long time playing parts that didn't seem to require acting or musical ability. Then she displayed both, in WSS, and people were impressed. She never really had any other great movie parts afterwards, either.

by Anonymousreply 157March 14, 2022 3:37 AM

R157 Bitch is a one-trick pony. Didn't deserve an Oscar for putting in one subpar performance that she would try to milk dry for the next six decades.

by Anonymousreply 158March 14, 2022 3:41 AM

R153 or people over 40. Death on the Nile $40M, Scream $80M, Jackass Forever $56M, Dog $47M, Uncharted $113M all released in 2022 made considerably more than WSS $38M which was released last year!

by Anonymousreply 159March 14, 2022 3:51 AM

He's tall, good looking, perfect leading man material but he's also a charisma vortex. He sucks all the charisma off the screen both from himself and from his scene partners. It's a unique talent but it's incompatible with movie stardom.

by Anonymousreply 160March 14, 2022 3:54 AM

I thought he was quite good in The Fault in Our Stars, but I haven’t seen him in anything else

by Anonymousreply 161March 14, 2022 5:14 AM

R161 He hasn't done anything that surpasses his work in The Fault in Our Stars. But I haven't watched West Side Story yet.

by Anonymousreply 162March 14, 2022 5:35 AM

R149 Taron's poor hole couldn't have taken them both.

by Anonymousreply 163March 14, 2022 5:59 AM

Non-talent. How does he even have a career?

by Anonymousreply 164March 14, 2022 7:34 AM

I think Ansel Is terrific in WSS—his singing voice is really beautiful—and critics calling him “wooden” just had their knives out because of that girl he ghosted who tried to #MeToo him on social media.

by Anonymousreply 165March 14, 2022 7:44 AM

Maybe he gives good head R164?

by Anonymousreply 166March 14, 2022 7:44 AM

R164, his father and people like Spielberg have a hard-on for always casting Jewish pretty boys.

by Anonymousreply 167March 14, 2022 7:50 AM

They are going to be re-releasing WSS for a short Oscar push run this week, screening it on Ansel's forehead,

by Anonymousreply 168March 14, 2022 7:53 AM

I’d like to know what Timothee and Ansel were like in LaGuardia. Someone posted on the Deuxmoi an angry Facebook rant from a supposed ex classmate who said they were both assholes and both had “fanclubs” of girls at the school who had crushes on them both. Timothee probably has an ego but he never seemed like he would be mean

[quote]Still, I really don't think Elgort is the reason why WSS is a flop. He may be one of the factors but the film has other issues, like the fact that it's a remake and a musical. There was no demand for this movie.

I watched it last night & it was so "meh" practically from the first scene; I can't really entire put my finger on just why exactly either. I liked the original & I like watching musicals, even The Heights, which is not great either but somewhat entertaining. WSS just seemed dull, flat & lifeless. We're meant to believe that this Tony is this brute with a heart of gold, Elgort didn't seem like that *at all*. He just has no magnetism or charisma. The only one that came close was Bernardo.

So I think both things are true: WSS's failure wasn't his fault, but he isn't a leading man either

by Anonymousreply 170March 14, 2022 8:50 AM

The original had Rita and Wood, and came at the bitter end of the musical's 30 year death march. Plus, it stayed closer to the original vibe, it was supposed to be a clash between Jew's and Catholic's, but WW2 kind of made the point moot so the recast it Chicano.

I remember when Ansel was the toast of LA back in 2014, ugh..... that smirk was all too real, charm of a doorstop.. I don't think Hollywood is coming back, when you have major actors working scale to do streaming it's over. The blockbusters will always do well for their "stars," but really that's more participation than acting. I think the age of the 8 figure people/human interest pictures died in 2000. We are no longer a monoculture, we don't experience as many moments together; everybody's media is self-curated.

by Anonymousreply 171April 3, 2022 7:45 PM

I found Ansel to be pretty good in most of the roles I've seen him in. Like most actors, it's not his fault if the films they appear in aren't as well received as expected or are not big box office successes. I initially thought making a new version of West Side Story was a bad idea, but it was overall better than the original 1961 film.

by Anonymousreply 172April 3, 2022 7:52 PM

His torso is abnormally long.

by Anonymousreply 173April 3, 2022 7:58 PM

Speaking in all seriousness - it wasn't really rape-rape was it?

by Anonymousreply 174April 3, 2022 8:37 PM

Nah, he hooked up with and then ghosted an impressionable young fan. She took her revenge on social media.

by Anonymousreply 175April 3, 2022 10:21 PM

[quote]When I heard they made a remake of WSS, my first thought was, Why? There was no way it would be as good as the original. Then I heard this version would be more faithful to the original Broadway play I was intrigued. The trailer looked promising, so I decided to see it and I loved it. The new WSS is actually better than the 1961 film version. I'm not sure how they could have marketed it better. In the Heights also was well received critically, but did not do well at the box office. It seems audiences will venture out during COVID for Marvel movies but not for well made musicals.

The 1961 version was a hot property. The new one is a remake of a movie that's 60 years old, that many people have already seen. The original was contemporary, the remake is a historical film about a bygone era. With music that isn't current any more. People probably wouldn't go to see a remake of South Pacific or The Pajama Game, either.

by Anonymousreply 176April 4, 2022 12:54 AM

R170 that if feels more like "Newsies" meets a Disney Princess (Rachel Zegler)

by Anonymousreply 177April 4, 2022 12:58 AM

The messages he was sending to 14 year olds were so creepy. They were like something you’d see on “To Catch A Predator”. He was in his early 20s when sending them I believe.

by Anonymousreply 178April 4, 2022 12:59 AM

More people probably liked Ansel Elgort in West Side Story better than Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman.

by Anonymousreply 179April 4, 2022 1:05 AM

I'd still like to hit it.

by Anonymousreply 180April 4, 2022 1:07 AM

He looks like a rooster.

by Anonymousreply 181April 4, 2022 1:12 AM

R181 would be on her back, legs up with her mouth open asking him to pick a hole if Ansel came offering dick.

by Anonymousreply 182April 4, 2022 1:31 AM

[quote]it was supposed to be a clash between Jew's and Catholic's

Between Jew's and Catholic's what?

by Anonymousreply 183April 4, 2022 2:19 AM

R182 ew. In that situation I would ask him to introduce me to David Alvarez.

by Anonymousreply 184April 4, 2022 2:43 AM

R183

It was originally supposed to be about rival Jewish and Catholic gangs on the Lower East Side.

by Anonymousreply 187April 4, 2022 4:33 AM

is Michael Faist's movie career over?

by Anonymousreply 188April 4, 2022 4:46 AM

R10, "He should stick to playing meek retards like in Baby Driver."

I've never seen Baby Driver, is it about a baby driving?

by Anonymousreply 189April 4, 2022 5:29 AM

he will be fine.....he is a brilliant actor in most projects.

by Anonymousreply 190April 4, 2022 5:40 AM

Mike Faist is shooting the new Luca Guadagnino movie opposite Zendaya and Josh O’Connor, R188.

by Anonymousreply 191April 4, 2022 5:45 AM

I liked the new WSS film, and while he wasn't the singing/acting standout of it, I thought he was fine. Certainly an upgrade on Richard Beymer in 1961. I'm sure he'll still get work, but he'll always be on the Twitter/Jezebel enemy list. If a project is very high-profile and commercial, and the choices are Elgort and three other actors around the same age who haven't had allegations made against them by an ex, it could tip the scale toward one of the other guys.

I don't think WSS's underperformance in theaters will factor in, though. He was no more responsible for that than Beymer was responsible for the success of the '61 film.

by Anonymousreply 192April 4, 2022 5:50 AM

I didn't watch West Side Story but I'm watching Tokyo Vice now and he's decent in it. Just watched 2 episodes so far.

I'm digging this series.

by Anonymousreply 193April 10, 2022 4:50 AM

R3 you need a Marvel character not a star to open a film

by Anonymousreply 194April 10, 2022 4:54 AM

R193 Ansel is good in everything he's acted in, which is why he keeps getting more work.

by Anonymousreply 195April 10, 2022 11:14 AM

Did he learn Japanese for this series? This is a really good show.

by Anonymousreply 196April 10, 2022 3:11 PM

R196 I remember he delivered some Japanese lines in the trailer. It wasn't too cringeworthy so he put some work into it.

by Anonymousreply 197April 10, 2022 8:26 PM

He doesn’t have IT. He better be saving his money.

by Anonymousreply 198April 10, 2022 8:27 PM

Maybe he caught IT and he's trying to get rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 199April 11, 2022 2:04 AM

From what I understand, the original plan was for Elgort to learn his Japanese lines phonetically, but the pandemic shutdown hit about a week after they started production. So he used all the downtime to learn Japanese for real, and he's semi-fluent now, and he's sticking with it in case the show gets picked up for another season. It's based on the real Edelstein's memoir, but the book covers a long period of time.

If there's ever a Wings reboot (ha!), Elgort should be the Steven Weber character.

by Anonymousreply 200April 11, 2022 2:58 AM

He's got about 30 seconds left on his freshness clock.

by Anonymousreply 201April 11, 2022 3:26 AM

new episode every thursday. yes, I was surprised. I was checking his insta and he was promoting this in Japan and speaking Japanese and writing in Japanese...it's not the hardest language to learn but good for him.
