I can’t see him recovering from this West Side Story flop, especially when he’s blamed for it.

Plus, young, white, and cute. I cant take anyone seriously who blames him for a movie that was one misstep after another, the primary one: this isn’t a movie anyone was clamoring to see. There’s no actor in his age range who could’ve done more for the box office.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 19, 2021 9:41 PM |
I think so, yes. Don't forget The Goldfinch was also a huge bomb. No one wants to see his smug, arrogant face on the big screen and the fact that he's a notorious douchebag doesn't help his case. Nor does the receding hairline or the wooden acting.

Shawn Mendes?

by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 19, 2021 9:44 PM |
Baby driver and Fault in our stars were huge hits. The problem is the rape allegations. Some people will never let that go and will raise a stink anytime he’s cast in something.

It might have done better with Harry Styles, though he's not remotely a tenor.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 19, 2021 9:45 PM |
He already had a reputation as a dickhead prior to the allegations.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 19, 2021 9:45 PM |
I still don't understand why Spielberg cast him.
Still, I really don't think Elgort is the reason why WSS is a flop. He may be one of the factors but the film has other issues, like the fact that it's a remake and a musical. There was no demand for this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 19, 2021 9:46 PM |
R7 Just about anyone could have brought in more teen girls. Douglas Booth, for example. Does he sing? Probably at least as well as Ansel and much better looking. And no rape allegations.

I'm pretty sure Disney just didn't want this to succeed. Releasing it a week before Spiderman killed any potential for it to have a Greatest Showman type slowburn. It's like this is something they got stuck with after buying Fox and are just clearing the slates.

Noting worse than a boring average looking white guy getting big roles. You hear that, Adam Driver. But eventually they make so many box office bombs that the parts dry up. Right, Jon Hamm?

It was a mistake to release this movie now. I know this will make eldergays take to their fainting couches, but West Side Story is an old, old musical from ages ago and it's pretty dated. I'm in my forties and have never seen it, like many people my age. If people my age have no interest, imagine the lack of interest Millennials/Gen Z have about it.

His career reminds me of the infamous article about Armie Hammer pointing out that his career was a series of flops and second (and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth) chances that he didn’t deserve and other people wouldn’t get. Ansel is another one who “looks like a star” to some execs who don’t seem to understand that audiences care about talent and charisma just as much, if not more. Funny that Ansel seems to have some of the same personal problems as Armie as well.

I watched at a friends home theater last night….she has a screener and her 15 year old daughter and a 40 year old friend both had no desire to see the film after seeing the previews yet were both enthralled/mesmerized by the film….I think too many marketing types assumed the whole under 40’s audience knew what WSS story was….and the trailers didn’t help. I enjoyed it….it was a refreshing update…I wasn’t sure what to expect from Mike Faist as RIff after seeing him as Connor in DEAR EVAN HANSEN but his was one of the stronger performances…

When I heard they made a remake of WSS, my first thought was, Why? There was no way it would be as good as the original. Then I heard this version would be more faithful to the original Broadway play I was intrigued. The trailer looked promising, so I decided to see it and I loved it. The new WSS is actually better than the 1961 film version. I'm not sure how they could have marketed it better. In the Heights also was well received critically, but did not do well at the box office. It seems audiences will venture out during COVID for Marvel movies but not for well made musicals.

Ansel has this preppy WASP look rich people (like, Hollywood Studio execs) might find appealing, but the average mainstream Joe considers him a douche bro. His main demographic were girls falling for such guys, but that died when #MeToo turned him into a player and a creep.

1. I think the production of this movie took way too long, and it took out the edge off of the release.

3. It was released during a worldwide pandemic.
Three strikes against it before it was ever even seen.

I had never seen WSS because the snippets I had seen of gangs dance-fighting looked so silly to me, but my dad wanted to see it and so I figured it would be nice to go with him. The fighting scenes were silly indeed—gang members doing pirhouettes with a loaded gun? But Spielberg's direction is meticulous and moving in this one, the jazzy music is wonderful, and the performances are excellent all around. I'm glad I saw it. It's an entertaimment highlight of the year for me, and it's one of few Spielberg movies I have really enjoyed.

Ansel Elgort sounds like an insect repellent product.

R113 Natalie Wood was more deserving of being an Oscar winner than conceited Rita Moreno. Same with Judy Garland. Judy should have won Best Supporting Actress that year instead of Rita.

R140 He does not well and looks like he lost a shit load of weight. I think he has an HBO show coming up?
I don’t know what will happen to his career. He is very well connected but there’s going to be a portion of people turned off by him. I read the allegations and they really made my skin crawl. I think of Aziz Ansari, whose story broke right when MeToo first started. I think if those allegations came out today (which seemed like an awkward guy not understanding social cues) the response would have been milder. He still hasn’t made a real comeback and his show was super popular at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 14, 2022 3:09 AM |
This was not a movie the under 40 crowd had a desire to see.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 14, 2022 3:14 AM |
R152, Aziz Anzari didn’t lose anything. The allegations got called out as be the second they were put out and he was widely defended.
He never was a huge star to begin with and I believe his show is still in production or at least had another season after me took
by Anonymous | reply 154 | March 14, 2022 3:14 AM |
Young people have no idea what WSS even is. Older people would rather just rewatch the original which had a superior cast. The remake completely lacked any star appeal whereas Natalie Wood became a star from that movie. Miss Snow Brown is never going to become big and this flop remake is probably going to be the pinnacle of her career.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 14, 2022 3:18 AM |
R154 I just checked and your right, but Aziz stepped down from the show and Lena Waithe became the new star. I know he was in the Parks and Rec covid thing but I remember there being a lot of anger online when he had a Netflix special come out. I was in college at the time and he was the biggest comedian for my age group, then John Mulaney swooped in
by Anonymous | reply 156 | March 14, 2022 3:21 AM |
R150 Moreno had been around a long time playing parts that didn't seem to require acting or musical ability. Then she displayed both, in WSS, and people were impressed. She never really had any other great movie parts afterwards, either.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 14, 2022 3:37 AM |
R157 Bitch is a one-trick pony. Didn't deserve an Oscar for putting in one subpar performance that she would try to milk dry for the next six decades.

R153 or people over 40. Death on the Nile $40M, Scream $80M, Jackass Forever $56M, Dog $47M, Uncharted $113M all released in 2022 made considerably more than WSS $38M which was released last year!

He's tall, good looking, perfect leading man material but he's also a charisma vortex. He sucks all the charisma off the screen both from himself and from his scene partners. It's a unique talent but it's incompatible with movie stardom.

by Anonymous | reply 164 | March 14, 2022 7:34 AM |
I think Ansel Is terrific in WSS—his singing voice is really beautiful—and critics calling him “wooden” just had their knives out because of that girl he ghosted who tried to #MeToo him on social media.

I’d like to know what Timothee and Ansel were like in LaGuardia. Someone posted on the Deuxmoi an angry Facebook rant from a supposed ex classmate who said they were both assholes and both had “fanclubs” of girls at the school who had crushes on them both. Timothee probably has an ego but he never seemed like he would be mean

[quote]Still, I really don't think Elgort is the reason why WSS is a flop. He may be one of the factors but the film has other issues, like the fact that it's a remake and a musical. There was no demand for this movie.
I watched it last night & it was so "meh" practically from the first scene; I can't really entire put my finger on just why exactly either. I liked the original & I like watching musicals, even The Heights, which is not great either but somewhat entertaining. WSS just seemed dull, flat & lifeless. We're meant to believe that this Tony is this brute with a heart of gold, Elgort didn't seem like that *at all*. He just has no magnetism or charisma. The only one that came close was Bernardo.
So I think both things are true: WSS's failure wasn't his fault, but he isn't a leading man either
by Anonymous | reply 170 | March 14, 2022 8:50 AM |
The original had Rita and Wood, and came at the bitter end of the musical's 30 year death march. Plus, it stayed closer to the original vibe, it was supposed to be a clash between Jew's and Catholic's, but WW2 kind of made the point moot so the recast it Chicano.
I remember when Ansel was the toast of LA back in 2014, ugh..... that smirk was all too real, charm of a doorstop.. I don't think Hollywood is coming back, when you have major actors working scale to do streaming it's over. The blockbusters will always do well for their "stars," but really that's more participation than acting. I think the age of the 8 figure people/human interest pictures died in 2000. We are no longer a monoculture, we don't experience as many moments together; everybody's media is self-curated.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | April 3, 2022 7:45 PM |
I found Ansel to be pretty good in most of the roles I've seen him in. Like most actors, it's not his fault if the films they appear in aren't as well received as expected or are not big box office successes. I initially thought making a new version of West Side Story was a bad idea, but it was overall better than the original 1961 film.

[quote]When I heard they made a remake of WSS, my first thought was, Why? There was no way it would be as good as the original. Then I heard this version would be more faithful to the original Broadway play I was intrigued. The trailer looked promising, so I decided to see it and I loved it. The new WSS is actually better than the 1961 film version. I'm not sure how they could have marketed it better. In the Heights also was well received critically, but did not do well at the box office. It seems audiences will venture out during COVID for Marvel movies but not for well made musicals.
The 1961 version was a hot property. The new one is a remake of a movie that's 60 years old, that many people have already seen. The original was contemporary, the remake is a historical film about a bygone era. With music that isn't current any more. People probably wouldn't go to see a remake of South Pacific or The Pajama Game, either.

by Anonymous | reply 191 | April 4, 2022 5:45 AM |
I liked the new WSS film, and while he wasn't the singing/acting standout of it, I thought he was fine. Certainly an upgrade on Richard Beymer in 1961. I'm sure he'll still get work, but he'll always be on the Twitter/Jezebel enemy list. If a project is very high-profile and commercial, and the choices are Elgort and three other actors around the same age who haven't had allegations made against them by an ex, it could tip the scale toward one of the other guys.
I don't think WSS's underperformance in theaters will factor in, though. He was no more responsible for that than Beymer was responsible for the success of the '61 film.

Maybe he caught IT and he's trying to get rid of it.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | April 11, 2022 2:04 AM |
From what I understand, the original plan was for Elgort to learn his Japanese lines phonetically, but the pandemic shutdown hit about a week after they started production. So he used all the downtime to learn Japanese for real, and he's semi-fluent now, and he's sticking with it in case the show gets picked up for another season. It's based on the real Edelstein's memoir, but the book covers a long period of time.
If there's ever a Wings reboot (ha!), Elgort should be the Steven Weber character.
