Madonna, Courtney Love, Nancy Spungeon, Rod Stewart, Sting, Billy Idol.. Would they have really made it otherwise?
People who went blonde (or white) and became legends

Gwen Stefani.

Look at what a beauty MM was anyway. If she had learned to act early on instead of later in her career I think she would have made it anyway. She didn't need bleach to be beautiful.
BTW, I think Madonna made it, not on her looks which weren't great with blond or dark hair but on her business sense. She has a nose for money making and how to fool the public into thinking you are giving them something worth seeing. Like the guy who owned the big circus. Madonna cannot sing, or dance well and can't act at all so it sure wasn't her talent or looks that gave her those billions.

Madonna is a showman and puts on a good show. She isn't the best singer in the world, but while the Whitney's and Mariah's showcased their vocal gymnastics, Madonna gave the public the good ol' razzmatazz.

IMO, the following people would not have been successful with dark hair:
1. Madonna
2. Britney Spears

Blondness was really not a sexual thing until the advent of JEAN HARLOW. Before she became famous in the early talkies of the 1930s, blonde hair was mostly associated with virginal innocent young girls, as personified by Mary Pickford. Torrid sexuality was confined to dark raven-haired vamps like Theda Bara, Gloria Swanson and Pola Negri.
Harlow was the first famous blonde femme fatale and the severe white hot platinum tone of her slick marcelled hair, especially when combined with her plucked arched eyebrows, dark cupid's bow lips and white skin, gave her blondness a sharp-edged Art Deco aura that was the perfect personification of sex in the 1930s.

#13 makes me wonder if Mae was a blonde (maybe a dirty blonde?). She probably started peroxiding it before puberty.
Name that tone.

Shame about Marilyn's hair. I've always thought her natural color was beautiful.

I was good friends with stylist Sylvia Barnhart, who took Monroe blonde. She had some incredible stories about Norma Jeane.

Marilyn's natural hair color was a sort of chestnut, not as bright as the picture above, and IMHO she was far more photogenic as a blonde than she was as a redhead. The blonde hair and pale skin made her stand out, she caught the light and glowed with a pale golden glow, something Charlize Theron has copied. Theron seems to be a natural dark blonde, but if she wants to glam it up she dyes her hair light blonde and uses very light makeup.
Scarlett Johanssen is another who is far more photogenic as a blonde, and of course her biggest role has been as a redhead with dark red hair. She looks SO much prettier as a blonde!

R12 I'm not sure about that because Mae West was born before her and they started their careers at the same time

Lana Turner—she did it before Marilyn Monroe. She had dark hair in her first few films, dyed it blonde, and her career took off.

MM looks so pretty in that pic...she should have stayed a darker blonde.

For some reason, early Jayne Mansfield at R27 reminds me of Madeleine Sherwood.

Just to clear up one point - Jean Harlow's platinum blonde look first wowed the public in the 1930 film "Hell's Angels", and Mae West's first film was "Night After Night" in 1932.
Therefore Harlow was Hollywood's first blonde sexpot, there had been blonde actresses before her but they were mainly eternal virgin types like Lillian Gish. Brunettes like Theda Bara and the redhead Clara Bow were the sexy ones of the silent era.

Elvis went the other way, dying his dirty blond hair black.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 21, 2021 2:45 AM |
A lot of other men have done the same, including recent Brit actors like Cumberbitch and Hiddleston. They look less wimpy with dark hair.
The first bleached-blonde himbo in Hollywood history was Buster Crabbe in the "Flash Gordon" serials. Crabbe had dark hair in real life, but since the series was based on comics where Flash was draw with yellow hair, they blonded him up. Very light hair looked spectacular in black and white, even on men.

I never tire of Marilyns face. It is just so pleasant, symmetrical and that smile is everything. The basic bitches today have nothing on her.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 24, 2021 7:32 PM |
R34 Elvis was beautiful, he would have been a stunner with any hair color, but with black hair he was more striking, while Cumberbatch, he would be better with some neutral brown tone that wouldn't emphasize his strange features. Hiddlestone was handsome blonde, but he is starting to lose his looks. Maybe he would look younger with lighter hair.

I agree on Eminem, he was a very handsome blondie, ok, he was young too. With brown hair he started to look plain.
