Irish Character Actor Barry Fitzgerald

Why is he not remembered like other character actors of the 1930's-1950's? He died in 1961, but he was in some of the greatest movies of the time (and some of all time):

Juno and the Paycock (1930)

The Plough and the Stars (1937)

Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Marie Antoinette (1938)

The Saint Strikes Back (1939)

The Long Voyage Home (1940)

The Long Voyage Home (1941)

How Green Was My Valley (1942)

Going My Way (1944)

None but the Lonely Heart (1944)

And Then There Were None (1945)

Variety Girl (1947)

The Story of Seabiscuit (1949)

The Quiet Man (1952)

Happy Ever After/Tonight's the Night (1954)

The Catered Affair (1956)

Add in his theater and radio work and the man should be remembered as a great!

I’m surprised naked city isn’t in your list, I’ve seen many of his films- but to me he’s most memorable in naked city.

R1 Oops forgot it! Sorry!

He's got a face like a squashed tomato.

He played up to the drunk, sentimentalizing, brainless, Irish stereotype.

None of us here have seen the first two on your list.

He also played a lot of tiresome priests.

At the end of his live he made a very funny comedy called Broth of A Boy where he plays possibly the world's oldest man, but he's also the most detested man in the village and they have to pretend they like him for the celebration. It used to be available on Youtube but it got scrubbed.

How come he was in "How Green Was My Valley"?

He's Irish and the valley was Welsh.

He pretty much played the same Irish character in every film he was in. I can hear his voice and accent in my head now.

No one here can claim to have seen those two ancient movies. They're silent movies aren't they?

Who, R9?

by Anonymousreply 10December 18, 2021 11:00 PM

Broth of a Boy - Bryan Singer's favorite movie

by Anonymousreply 11December 18, 2021 11:01 PM

R9 How come his brother has a different surname?

by Anonymousreply 12December 18, 2021 11:15 PM

Ehmmm...I've seen both of those early films of his. The first one is an early sound picture by Alfred Hitchcock. The second one stars Barbara Stanwyck. I can't actually remain a moment of either one, but they're on my list of ones I've seen.
