Dangerous Liaisons (1988)

Watching it on FLIX. While it may have been THE movie at the time, it certainly hasn't aged well. The stilted dialogue and mannered acting are laughable now.

A moment of your time.

Two things: A word of advice, which of course you may ignore, but...

...it is honestly intended...

...and a request....

Go on.

The advice is: Be careful of the Marquise de Merteuil.

You must permit me to treat with scepticism...

...anything you have to say about her.

Nevertheless, I must tell you...

...in this affair, we are both her creatures...

The dialogue is meant to represent how people spoke in the 18th Century, OP. Of course it will not sound like most people speak at a colloquial level. Also, it is an interpretation of a French novella made to suit the idiosyncrasy and tastes of an Anglo-speaking public; I mean, the story takes place in France and not England and yet, everyone uses Received Pronunciation, which didn't become the norm for the British upper classes until the mid-19th Century. That doesn't make it any less good, of course. It isn't meant to reflect literal reality, as most films.

As for the acting, it is nothing short of superb. Even the awful Keanu Reeves manages to make an adequate job portraying the effete, pusillanimous Chevalier Danceny. You obviously are too used to Sofia Coppola and superhero films to know what proper cinema is all about.

It's sublime, don't you find?

OP are you 12?

Cruel Intentions was better, no?

I'm kidding. I actually love both.

I still think it holds up. It's a classic story. It may be Glenn's best performance.

I know many felt Malkovich was miscast but I thought he was great.

For me, 1989's Valmont didn't age as well.

Ugh, Valmont's big drawback was that insipid, mealy-mouthed Meg Tilly. Totally miscast in her role.

Everyone was miscast in that film.

Should have been Glenn’s Oscar. She’s brilliant especially in the last 6 or 7 minutes. I know it’s easy to make fun of Glenn but she’s a great artist and no one can take that away from her.

The scene where he molests Uma seemed a little close to home. He was really fondling her if you watch the scene, putting his tongue in her mouth and sucking her nipples. She was 15 and he was in his 40s.

Glenn should receive an honorary Oscar for her film work, over the years. She’s excellent.

Glenn was robbed.

Glenn’s Norma Desmond is one of the top five performances I’ve seen in my eldergay lifetime. Yes, the others sang it better but no one acted the role or the songs better. And she was every bit as grand in the revival 20 years later.

OP is nuts. This is a fantastic movie and Glenn gives the performance of her career. Getting beat by Jodie Foster for The Accused was beyond absurd.

No.

The bigger crime was/is that Alan Rickman wasn’t cast n the role he created. Performance begin at 1:13

I love this film! I saw Valmont but have no recollection of it.
