"A Home of Our Own" - Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong - Christmas Classic?
This forgotten gem stars Kathy Bates as a working-class widow with six brats who pack up their sad-sack life in Los Angeles and move to the mountains of Idaho in search of a better life. They move into a half-finished old shack, slowly rebuild it on their own, and live a life of good old-fashioned poverty. Along the way, Kathy has a disastrous date with some townie with a Thunderbird (who, as you see in this scene, turns out to be a real Hiram Beat-wife). Her eldest son has growing pains, and resents his mother's proud refusal to accept charity from the townsfolk even if it means a crappy shack for the family and no presents at Christmas. The story goes from there.
It's a real hanky-soaker. Has anyone here seen it?

For context: Throughout the movie prior to this scene, the mom would vent her frustrations on her bratty eldest son, often beating him with his dead father's belt. She even nearly beat him on Christmas morning. This experience reminds her that hurting other people does more damage than one thinks. Hammering the belt into a tree is her commitment to never again hitting her children.

Well, hammering the child into the tree would've had her taken away by CPS.

R3 Not in rural Idaho in the 1950s.

R2, thanks for that context. I thought she was securing the belt to the tree so that she could use it to hang herself. But then I thought, it's gonna take more than one nail.

Too bad when one of the little shits starts a fire that burns down an entire house, she's already given up The Belt.

Edward Furlong reminds me of a brunet River Phoenix. Between Furlong and Leonardo DiCaprio, it seems Hollywood was trying to find the next River. They hit jackpot with Leo!

The movie is free to watch on YouTube. I suggest downloading Adblock Plus (it's free) to avoid the numerous ads and interruptions.

Agree, I randomly caught it coming on many years ago, never knew it existed. Great film, cast and story.

Winter classic, yes. Christmas classic, no.

Isn’t Kathy’s character date raped in the scene before this one?

R16 I think it's merely an attempted date-rape, followed by a beating for noncompliance. The actor who played the fister was Bates' husband around this time, Tony Campisi.

Agree that the real shock here is how lovely young Edward Furlong looked. So I guess there were three films where his looks and potential still glowed: Terminator 2, this one, and American Heart with Jeff Bridges.
And then came the plunge.

I’d add Pet Semetary II and Aerosmith’s Livin on the Edge video for Peak Edward potential. I would record this video every time I saw it on MTV for Edward and Joe Perry. And naked Steven Tyler at the start.

I sort of vaguely remember this movie,
but I thought it was called "With 6 You Get Eggroll"

R21 Y'know, Kathy Bates starred in the original production of "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune." She was magical.
