The Big Chill
I know this movie is now considered pretty lowbrow, but I’ve always loved it. I was watching it on demand and some weird things stood out. Such as:
1) What was Karen’s (JoBeth Williams) deal? She was coming on to her former boyfriend (Tom Berenger) the whole weekend. After they finally fuck, she acts like she can’t get away from him fast enough, and starts talking about how she and her husband may or not be able to come and visit him on-set on his TV show? WTF? Was she the first bipolar character ever depicted in a Hollywood movie?
2) Was the Mary Kay Place character a lesbian? She sure looked and acted like one.
3) Was Meg Tilly’s character supposed to be retarded? She sure looked and acted like she was.
4) Did it occur to anyone on the production staff tha you could easy put up several friends for a weekend in that plantation without sticking some of them in the attic? That huge house must have had 12 bedrooms.
5) Would my mother have been better than Glenn in the role of the stricken-looking, occasionally naked and grieving hostess for the weekend’s events? I had just put her to bed when I started to watch the movie. Maybe I’ll ask her tomorrow after she takes her Abilify.
Thanks in advance! Love you guys!

Oh FFS you type in Big Chill and Datalounge into Google and get a fuckton of threads. What is left at this point to discuss? Here is one at random.

Hey now! I did a search for other threads on the Big Chill using this site’s search function and none of that came up. Isn’t that the whole point for a site having a search? I shouldn’t have to use Google.

Just to add: Why is DataLounge such a search Nazi environment? You post an extra thread on the Big Chill... So what? I know you’re probably waiting for a reply on what to add to your balsamic vinegar douche, but calm down already.

Does the film hold up I wonder. I missed it when it first came out.

The lack of diversity is very problematic. Sara Ramirez and Billy Porter should time-travel back to 1983 and join the cast so it's more inclusive.

That’s very sweet. R7. I will tell her tomorrow. At the moment I have to put out a little fire. She set fire to the TV when she woke up and saw what I was watching. She’s screaming about why I’m not watching “fucking Out if Africa”!

That is the name of the movie? Right? Out if Africa? Never saw it, but I’m sure she made if if she says so.

Err.... back to the film:: What was JoBeth’s character trying to prove? Was she just trying to .... rationalize.... her choice to marry a dull, rich guy? And get another piece of that ho Tom Berenger dick while she was at it? The word “cooze” comes to mind.

JoBeth William's character's action are perfectly normal given the situation. She's back among her college friends who make her feel like she's 20 again. She sees her old crush who has long let it be known he likes her. But now that crush is a Hollywood sex symbol, which only serves to enhance the fantasies she has long had about the man. She's in a boring marriage and desperately needs excitement. She throws herself at him. Afterward, reality sets in and she realizes her marriage may be boring, but it is stable and her husband is a good father to their children. She also realizes if she tires to get involved with Sam any further, stable and secure is the last thing she will get. Since the trip is almost over, she says and does things to distance herself from the situation until they can all part company amicably.
Nothing bipolar about it at all. Millions of men and women have experienced exactly the same feelings.
