Is it any different than a good tv and a blu ray?

The Shining is not said to be a very good 4K.
2001 is reference quality.
Daughters of Darkness is also said to be extraordinary.
There are so many niche, genre movies being released on 4K now, your head will spin. It isn’t just the blockbusters. Older catalog titles that you never heard of are coming out on 4K.
Blood for Dracula (Paul Morrissey/Andy Warhol) just got a fabulous 4K release. Many more are coming next year. Kino Lorber has announced a ton, and Criterion is now getting in the game too, after holding out forever.

The Silence of the Lambs, it should be noted, has the “wrong color space” for the first 20 minutes, so the colors, including skin tones, are very muted. Then the problem is corrected after the ~20-minute mark and it’s fine.
This happened because MGM, who did the 4K transfer, supplied the faulty master to Kino Lorber, and Kino is powerless to correct it, or something. The 4K digital stream of it, which has been available for 2 years on iTunes, also has this error for just the first 20 minutes. But other than that, it’s a noticeable improvement over the blu ray.
Misery, also put out by Kino Lorber, is a massive improvement over the Shout Factory blu ray.
The new 4K of A Clockwork Orange is also stunning.

A comparison video for the curious. Results may vary depending on your screen.

Except they don’t produce 8K discs or players and it’s hard to imagine they ever will.

Queen Margot - Vincent Perez's massive dong is worth every cent of the 4K bluray.

I have some but only because it’s a Blu ray/4K combo. You need a 4K compatible TV and 4K player. Apparently 4Ks don’t have region codes. Essentially, they're region-free. They can be played on any 4K player, in any part of the world.
I have a region free Blu-ray player and don’t plan on collecting in 4K because Blu-ray is fine for me.
