Josh Hartnett Turned down the lead in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

It would have been totally different, but kissing Joaquin Phoenix? Meh…

I thought he was so sexy back in day

by Anonymousreply 1December 14, 2021 2:25 PM

That would have been hot.

by Anonymousreply 2December 14, 2021 2:29 PM

I had a major crush on Joaquin in the 2000s, particularly the GLADIAOR/SIGNS/WALK THE LINE era. In fact, WTL and BM both came out within a month of each other in late 2005 and Phoenix was so hot in WTL. Joaquin got an Oscar nod for that movie and most likely would have too for BM, but he still would have lost to Phillip Seymour Hoffman in CAPOTE, I'm afraid.

Josh and Jake would’ve been a fun watch

by Anonymousreply 4December 14, 2021 2:43 PM

Whoops!

And why did he never get a superhero franchise?

by Anonymousreply 5December 14, 2021 2:44 PM

He was offered TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS to play Superman and turned it down!

by Anonymousreply 6December 14, 2021 2:46 PM

I will kiss Joaquin or Josh any time, call me boys.

by Anonymousreply 7December 14, 2021 2:54 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 8December 14, 2021 2:58 PM

Which character was written as a squinty-eyed rat-faced shitty actor?

by Anonymousreply 9December 14, 2021 3:11 PM

His regret should be not playing such a groundbreaking role. I wish he was honest and say, “I was scared, I was afraid of what people would think and say, how this would affect my career, and I was wrong” and not the silly “I regret not kissing Joaquin Phoenix”. Because that’s the truth. He was scared.

by Anonymousreply 10December 14, 2021 3:21 PM

Was Josh going to be playing the Jake Gyllenhaal role?

by Anonymousreply 11December 14, 2021 3:29 PM

Ever notice that actors never claim they turned down the lead in a movie that flopped?

Both Ledger and Gyllenhaal were warned by agents and advisors that appearing in the movie would be career suicide. I'm sure there are a number of actors who refused to even consider it.

by Anonymousreply 12December 14, 2021 4:17 PM

IIRC Joaquin didn't want to do the sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 13December 14, 2021 4:38 PM

Mark Walhberg turned it down too. What’s his excuse?

by Anonymousreply 14December 14, 2021 4:48 PM

Mark Wahlberg is homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 15December 14, 2021 4:59 PM

That's not what I heard!

by Anonymousreply 16December 14, 2021 5:01 PM

R1 I think he still is

by Anonymousreply 17December 14, 2021 5:03 PM

I like Josh Hartnett but he was basically a privileged straight white man given every possible opportunity in Hollywood, there’s no reason to feel sorry for his career choices.

by Anonymousreply 18December 14, 2021 5:11 PM

Has he had that ugly neck mole sliced off yet?

by Anonymousreply 19December 14, 2021 5:14 PM

I hope Taron Egerton learns the lesson of Josh’s neck mole career derailment and has his dealt with accordingly.

by Anonymousreply 20December 14, 2021 5:19 PM

R10 didn’t think about it that way…of course. And once all the hoopla died down, Heath and Jake didn’t crash and burn career-wise. Well, Heath died and Jake made some bad movie choices. But none of that was related to starring in BM. Josh was probably scared or his agent told him not to.

by Anonymousreply 21December 14, 2021 5:37 PM

I think it's good that he turned down "Brokeback Mountains" and two guys who could actually act were cast instead.

by Anonymousreply 22December 14, 2021 5:46 PM

Josh takes self-loathing to a whole new level

by Anonymousreply 23December 15, 2021 5:28 AM

Thank god Josh finally kissed a boy in Penny Dreadful (Reeve Carney, so hot) almost a decade later.

by Anonymousreply 24December 15, 2021 5:49 AM

He needs to keep doing gay love scenes. He's still fine as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 25January 20, 2022 3:03 PM

Joaquin and Josh would have been hot.

by Anonymousreply 26January 20, 2022 3:15 PM

Josh and Heath together would have been sublime. I couldn't stand Jake, I thought he had no sex appeal.

by Anonymousreply 27January 20, 2022 3:16 PM

Why do so many DLers think Mark Wahlberg is homophobic? People get older and wiser. We are capable of change.

by Anonymousreply 28January 20, 2022 3:21 PM

Josh's filmography is a lot like Keanu Reeves and Ryan Phillippe's. It's mostly awful, generic action and thriller roles and very few standout films. He turned down a lot of roles that would have made him a bigger star. I really liked Josh in Lucky Never Slevin, Sin City, Penny Dreadful and 30 Days of Night. I think he was expecting Pearl Harbor and Black Dahlia to make him a big star but both were disappointments.

by Anonymousreply 29January 20, 2022 3:21 PM

R28 He's mentally challenged, is a diehard Catholic, supported Trump and most of his roles pander to the MAGAT crowd. Both Mark and Donnie may be cool with gays as friends like their bandmate Jonathan Knight but they support Republican politicians who are anti-LGBT.

by Anonymousreply 30January 20, 2022 3:25 PM

He cried at hearing of Paul Wellstone's early demise. He cried over a politician. Failed human.

by Anonymousreply 31January 20, 2022 3:30 PM

I remember reading an interview with Ang Lee (director) and him making a statement as far as casting:

"None of the closeted actors would do it."

He never said whom he approached, though.

by Anonymousreply 32January 20, 2022 3:47 PM

[quote]"None of the closeted actors would do it."

So true!

by Anonymousreply 33January 20, 2022 4:01 PM

I'm watching him in The Fear Index. very handsome.

by Anonymousreply 34February 11, 2022 2:58 PM

He turned it down cause he was scared.

by Anonymousreply 35February 11, 2022 3:00 PM

Lots of actors have played gay. Whose career did it hurt in the '00s?

by Anonymousreply 36February 11, 2022 3:10 PM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 37February 11, 2022 3:31 PM

Why did he turn it down? He already played gay. Didn't anyone see Pearl Harbor?

by Anonymousreply 38February 12, 2022 2:29 AM

Maybe if he's offered the role of the BOTTOM in BAREBACK MOUNTAIN he will grab the part- he looks like a total bottom anyway

by Anonymousreply 39February 12, 2022 2:30 AM

Josh Harnett can’t act. Seems like a nice person, though.

by Anonymousreply 40February 12, 2022 2:56 AM

Josh in the streaming run of Penny Dreadful let Reeve Carney fuck him. That scene was eliminated in the DVD edition.

I'd fuck Josh any day. As to Brokeback, we'll never know how he might have played it, but to give that film up for Black Dahlia--what a waste.

by Anonymousreply 41February 12, 2022 2:59 AM

DId anyone watch The Fear Instinct? He bares his ass in it! I thought he was very good in it.

by Anonymousreply 42February 12, 2022 5:01 AM

The problem is that he looks especially hot soaking wet - whether it's standing in the rain, under a sprinkler, or climbing out of any liquid.

There are only so many fucking ways to sneak in rain scenes.

by Anonymousreply 43February 12, 2022 5:16 AM

Follow up to R43;

You'll notice this is in direct contrast with James Marsden who looks like a beaver when wet.

by Anonymousreply 44February 12, 2022 5:19 AM

James Marsden is a second banana.

by Anonymousreply 45February 12, 2022 6:49 AM

Josh didn't want his tongue anywhere near that harelip/cleft palate.

by Anonymousreply 46February 12, 2022 7:20 AM

Josh Hartnett is in this twisted, khole of a movie called Valley of the Gods. It’s fucking nuts and wonder how Josh Hartnett not only got involved, but got the lead. Seek this movie the next time you trip.

He also looked hot in the reenactment scenes in the HBO doc Exterminate All the Brutes.

They’re bold choices, even if pretty under the radar.

by Anonymousreply 47February 12, 2022 7:22 AM

He’s 44 this year…time flies.

by Anonymousreply 48February 12, 2022 5:25 PM

I loved him in Pearl Harbor. I only watch that movie for him.

by Anonymousreply 49February 12, 2022 5:26 PM

You regularly watch that movie?

by Anonymousreply 50February 12, 2022 5:39 PM

What?^

by Anonymousreply 51February 12, 2022 5:49 PM

he dates in europe...so what does that make him?

by Anonymousreply 52February 12, 2022 7:34 PM

[quote]James Marsden is a second banana.

I wouldn't mind getting acquainted with Marsden's banana.
