Let's Discuss "Men on Film"

Was In Living Color homophobic or just simple fun?

I loved those sketches. Didn’t think they were homophobic at all.

We just gonna do this thread every few months?

Can you imagine the outcry if they tried it today?

Personally, I found it hilarious - one of the few instances where they both laughed AT us and WITH us.

by Anonymousreply 3December 14, 2021 12:43 PM

They were hilarious back in the day

by Anonymousreply 4December 14, 2021 12:43 PM

The PC/Woke crowd would never allow this on the air today.

by Anonymousreply 5December 14, 2021 12:46 PM

In Living Color was one of the funniest shows ever and these two hysterical. Jim Cary’s characters and freaks were off the chart funny.

by Anonymousreply 6December 14, 2021 12:50 PM

Hilarious. Homophobic? No idea. Just enjoyed it.

Back in the 90s I worked at the Improv in DC and DAG was performing that weekend. I went into the manager’s office for some reason and he was there, just piddling. He actually lapsed into his Men on Film character and I just about died.

Exactly

R5, I don’t think anyone would care if it was done today.

Now if they made a sketch with “cis” men playing trans women that would be another story.

by Anonymousreply 11December 14, 2021 1:39 PM

Still hilarious now

by Anonymousreply 12December 14, 2021 1:57 PM

why does it have to be mutually exclusive? some things are both offensive *and* funny...

by Anonymousreply 13December 14, 2021 2:06 PM

R13, exactly. If the joke doesn't challenge our preconceptions, it just isn't comedy.

by Anonymousreply 14December 14, 2021 2:22 PM

Watch for the humor, stay for the Carl Lewis shade at the end.

Hilarious. Living Color was across the board funny.

by Anonymousreply 16December 15, 2021 6:32 AM

I wanted to feel offended, but wasn’t. I still remember them calling Delta Burke a Delta 747 & I just died.

I always just assumed David Alan Grier was really gay, and that Damon Wayans was straight but so hot he'd have had enjoyed the opportunity of fucking the powerful and famous men in Hollywood who wanted him,.

by Anonymousreply 18December 15, 2021 7:02 AM

I believe David Alan Grier went to Yale School of Drama

Pics please.

The minses sketches were terrific; of course, that show also gave us that attention-whore JLo.

by Anonymousreply 21December 15, 2021 6:03 PM

DAG's Damon Wayne's pronunciation and use of "menses" or "minses" always makes me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 22December 15, 2021 6:12 PM

I thought they were hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 23December 15, 2021 6:21 PM

I got a kick out of them back in the day.

Not sure how they would go over today. Not because of PC-ness or "wokeness" but rather because shows like RPDR have gone mainstream for 10 years now. These two seem tame compared to that. They would have to probably be more underground with the jokes.

Stefon was always hilarious on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 24December 15, 2021 9:10 PM

Probably offensive but I found them funny. I'm certain in today's climate they'd be blamed for millions of trans deaths though. A literal genocide.

by Anonymousreply 25December 15, 2021 9:19 PM

I have to give their costumer props for the clothes Blaine and Antoine wore. The little fascinators Blaine wore were hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 26December 17, 2021 6:37 PM

It’s not offensive because we’re laughing with how ridiculous they are

by Anonymousreply 27December 19, 2021 12:01 PM

Agreed - take them as a pair of pretentious queens rather than the writers' intending them as representing all gay men.
