Now that the Go-Gos are in, should the Bangles be next? They had bigger hits.
YES!! The Hall Of Fame consistently ignores females!!

Hazy Shade of Winter:
[quote] When released as a single in November 1987, "Hazy Shade of Winter" became a huge hit, surpassing the popularity of the original version, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind Tiffany's "Could've Been", and also number 11 in the UK. It was also a hit around Europe.

"Eternal Flame" rose to number one after ten weeks, making the Bangles the third all-female group to top the Hot 100 multiple times, after the Shirelles and the Supremes:

Up next: Toto Coelho, The Maryjane Girls and Pink Lady.

Little known fact…the bassist from the Bangles was part of the original incarnation of the Runaways.

The "Under The Covers" albums w/ Matthew Sweet are classics...

Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 14, 2021 5:30 AM |
Fuck no. I actually like Eternal Flame, but she’s singing off key.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 14, 2021 5:35 AM |
They had a few years of prominence. Is that all it takes? They were amusing, but hardly influential.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 14, 2021 6:10 AM |
And yet no love for The Real World from their debut EP, which alone far surpasses the entire GoGos output. Add the neglected I’m in Line, and How is the Air Up There, and it’s obvious that you nellies have taste up your ass.
What’s also equally sad is that no one here probably even has a clue about Emitt Rhodes or Moby Grape.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 14, 2021 6:12 AM |
Either you got it or you ain’t. The Bangles performing The Real World at the Troubadour, 2015. So yeah, they still got it.

Their cover of Hazy Shade of Winter was fantastic.

Released in October 1988, "In Your Room" entered the Billboard Hot 100 the following month and peaked at number five in January. It reached number four on the Singles Sales chart, number nine on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and number five on the Modern Rock chart.
The original video is no longer available, and the available performances of the song are lip synced (why?).

The Bangles' Behind The Music is the ultimate in rock drama.
It's hard to pick between the two stand out moments. There was Vicki's "Eternal Flame was a beautiful song..... Whitney Houston could have a hit with it... why are we doing it?" and Michael's "I remember sort of sitting on a couch with a cup of tea for about 6 years or so".
As the older of the sisters Vicki must still bear a grudge over Susanna and Michael not attending Debbi's wedding.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 8, 2022 6:52 AM |
They absolutely do! I fell in love with Susanna when I saw the HTAF video in ‘84 & was so happy when they “made” it with their mainstream hits after. Their music sounds great to this day, though WLAE is a bit cringey…

Sounds like you only listened to the big "Walk Like an Egyptian" hit, R23.
Their version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" improved upon the original. Their versatility and record of chart success merits a nomination.

If Girls Aloud fucked Prince and lived in LA.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 8, 2022 9:06 AM |
Nope. They have influenced no one. Not remotely as influential as the Go-Gos
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 8, 2022 9:08 AM |
No. They were mediocre.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 8, 2022 9:08 AM |
Pat Benatar belongs there first.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 8, 2022 9:09 AM |
They sure do.
I was a punk rock kid in the 90s and In Your Room was a go to for me as I learned how to play a shitty guitar.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 8, 2022 9:26 AM |
Well, they inducted twirling hippie nanny goat Stevie Nicks. so the standards must have dropped.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 8, 2022 9:28 AM |
They had the biggest chart hit of 1987, ahead of U2, Whitney, and Michael Jackson.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 8, 2022 9:37 AM |
R8 MicHael Steele wasn't an original member of the Runaways. I think she was a replacement for Jackie Fox (Fuchs), who was the original bassist.

Beautiful harmonies. I miss harmony in popular music.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 8, 2022 10:03 AM |
Of course they do. I never got into The Go-Go's much as a kid. Looking at their greatest hits compilation, I only remember 4 songs. I was familiar with and liked more than double that amount of The Bangles tunes, so for that reason alone, I say, "Send them in!"
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 8, 2022 10:07 AM |
Sure, why not. They achieved a lot in the 80s and deserve the recognition. However, the difference between them and the GoGos is that the GoGos' music has stood the test of time and is still very ubiquitous. A year doesn't go by in which I don't hear a GoGos tune in some movie or commercial. I can't say the same for The Bangles' music which I never hear. The Bangles were also much more talented musicians, but they didn't write all of their own music. The GoGos were more self-contained.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 8, 2022 10:18 AM |
Nope. Influence = zilch.
I vehemently disagreed with the Go Go's getting in but at least they were, in some way, trailblazers.
Mind you, we all know RR HOF is a complete joke.
There's serious conjecture that Mariah gets in next year while Chaka Khan, with or without Rufus, is still not there. Nor is Joy Division. Nor is Kate Bush. Nor are the New York Dolls. When you talk about cultural significance and influence.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 8, 2022 10:20 AM |
Yeah, the RRHOF is absolutely a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 8, 2022 10:21 AM |
R36 I mean...THAT'S the only reason the GoGo's SHOULD be in because they are trailblazers BUT that's where it ends.
Joy Division and NY dolls should DEF be in because of their influence.
Didn't Depeche Mode get in last year?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 8, 2022 10:26 AM |
Be serious, The Bangles sharing the same space as Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 8, 2022 10:26 AM |
R25 Yeah, cause Girls Aloud play their own instruments and write their own music.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 8, 2022 10:32 AM |
[quote] However, the difference between them and the GoGos is that the GoGos' music has stood the test of time and is still very ubiquitous. A year doesn't go by in which I don't hear a GoGos tune in some movie or commercial.
Those are fair points, R35. WBut why should they be condemned for not selling out to movies and commercials?
Would "Manic Monday" be a #1 hit if Prince recorded it? No. The Bangles need to be inducted in 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 8, 2022 10:36 AM |
Crazy that the New York Dolls and Kate Bush aren't in yet. They definitely deserve it.
Tina Turner, as a solo artist, only got inducted last year. She should've been inducted many years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 8, 2022 7:31 PM |
They don't play instruments, barely write songs, never do concerts without secret shadow band players. Nah.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 8, 2022 7:32 PM |
[quote]They don't play instruments, barely write songs, never do concerts without secret shadow band players. Nah.
Fuck off cuntface.
On their 5 studio albums they recorded 63 songs, Only 9 weren't written or co-written by a Bangle.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 8, 2022 7:45 PM |
They should, but they won't be any time soon. They won't push for it either, because they're not fame whores like most of The Go-Gos are. I do wonder if them getting inducted would be enough to get Michael Steele to come out of seclusion. She hasn't been seen publicly since she left the band in 2005.
And R43 is wrong on all counts. They play all their own instruments and wrote the majority of their own songs. Some outside musicians sometimes plays keyboards and other instruments live cause obviously they can't sing, and play two different instruments at the same time.

All Over the Place is a power pop/paisley underground classic. If ya know, ya know. They wrote every song on it but two (they always did great covers as well).
I happen to love both The Bangles and The Go-Go's. But the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is meaningless. Bon Jovi are in the Hall of Fame.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 9, 2022 3:34 AM |
I think Michael is just over the music business and being in the public eye. She was hard to convince to rejoin the band when they reformed in 1999 but gave in. She also doesn't need to be anymore, because her mother and stepfather were fairly wealthy (they owned a chain of car washes in California) and left her a good amount of money when they died, plus she was never one of those people who went crazy spending money after having success, so she had money saved from her musical ventures too (mostly from The Bangles output).

Hazy Shade, a cover, was their best song. The Go Gos who were recently inducted kick the Bangles ass and are much more deserving. The Go Gos are way cooler.
