Watching the press conference this afternoon, it slowly began to dawn on me that this guy (who I had never heard of) checks a LOT of boxes: Young (44), handsome, son of the former governor, empathic, emotional. Vanderbilt grad, U of Virginia Law School, Governor since 2019, formerly Atty General of the Commonwealth 2016-2019. Yes, I realize he is spearheading the massive recovery effort is KY....but in a year or so...is anyone else smelling Presidential contender?!! Take a good hard look, Democrats, at what is right under your noses!!!
Andy Beshear, Democrat Governor of Kentucky

r1 A candidate has to be able to win. Black elderly female voters gave us Biden. They are not afraid of voting for a winner when they sense it.
The VP pick has to have some balance to it. He'll need to guarantee a female running mate.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 12, 2021 10:02 PM |
OP: "Democrat" is a noun, not an adjective. Unless you're the enemy.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 12, 2021 10:02 PM |
Let's not forget that Democrats got a two term POTUS out of Clinton, who was Governor of a traditionally red state. Let's hope this guy isn't the pussyhound he was!!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 12, 2021 10:03 PM |
He won't win KY in a Presidential general election but that wont matter. If he runs for President, he wont be able to run for re-election of KY in 2023. His chances of re-election are no better than 50-50 under the best of circumstances if he doesn't have any major fuckups.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 12, 2021 10:04 PM |
So in one possible universe he ends up as Kamala's VP choice
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 13, 2021 12:08 AM |
r6 is the reason why Democrats lose. Always finding things that still aren't right even when positive contributions would be more helpful.
OP, I don't know this man. Will read up on him. My initial thought when I saw your thread: If he is good, wouldn't he be needed in Kentucky? I like that more young Democrats get noticed, so here is another one. I hope we don't beat him down to the ground on our own turf for not ticking 120 of 100 liberal causes. If he is a Democrat and he can get the majority of votes, he will get my vote either way. Go Kentucky!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 13, 2021 12:29 AM |

Andy has been a great governor for Kentucky, but I'll be surprised if he's reelected. He was one of the few southern governors to enact COVID restrictions, shutting down businesses, schools and (gasp) CHURCHES! People were pissed. The idiots on Facebook went crazy. He didn't bend, though. I respect him so much.
I'd be shocked if he had Clintonesque skeletons in his closet. I think he's a real boy scout. He seems to genuinely love his family more than anything.

Cut him some slack for not looking dewy fresh since by his own admission he's had very little sleep since the tornado hit on Friday. The stress must be overwhelming.
Nonetheless, I think he could raise his profile considerably by the way he handles this incredible situation. Mid terms are still a year away, and a LOT can happen before 2024. I would just like to see him get noticed, and let things proceed from there. As Kamala sinks....

Nice sturdy legs in shorts in a few of the photos, too. His eyes and big nose are his best features.

Wondering what the Democrats will do after the lose badly in 2022 midterms? Biden is no Clinton or Obama. He's not charismatic and so old that there's no guarantee he can run again. Part of the party has moved so far to the left it's hard to see the Democrats not tearing themselves apart.
It's uncharted waters my friends.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | December 13, 2021 11:01 AM |
Nobody can figure out who is going to connect to voters when it comes to presidential politics. I would have thought MT gov Bullock would have been way up there but in a crowded field many strong candidates suffer. It throws many off their game. He is still a likely candidate if Biden doesn’t run again. Also, Biden is likely to be a strong candidate against the last toddler president.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 13, 2021 11:03 AM |
Black people didn't ask for Kamala Harris. And if it wasn't for black people, you dumbasses would have gone with Liz Warren or Bernie and we'd be about to wrap up year one of Trump's second term. The only people who care about a rainbow coalition ticket is white progressives, Twitter, and the media who loves nothing more than the democrats in disarray narrative.
Black people would have been far more excited about someone like Hakeem Jeffries or Val Demings. The only people who need to check off boxes in these races are the ones mentioned above. The first female president is going to be a republican, and I can't wait to watch the progressive heads explode. Progressives ruin everything.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | December 13, 2021 11:15 AM |
[quote]And if it wasn't for black people, you dumbasses would have gone with Liz Warren or Bernie
Warren was never ahead in the primaries. It was either Bernie or Buttigieg at first, and when it became clear they were leading after the first few primaries, Democrats came out in droves to vote for Biden because they wanted someone who could get elected. Buttigieg also stepped aside early on to help that happen.
It's true that the several Southern states helped set the tone during the March 3rd primaries for Biden getting the nom, but it wasn't black voters who kept Warren or Sanders from winning.
It WAS black voters who helped Biden get the presidency though, and got GA two Democratic senators and therefore gave the Senate to the Dems.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 13, 2021 11:23 AM |
Beshear could be a reasonable Presidential candidate. He has a bit of the Bill Clinton charismatic Southern Governor thing going on. We'll have to see, he's not well-known enough yet on the national stage.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 13, 2021 12:12 PM |
I think NC’s Democratic Governor Roy Cooper would make a good Presidentialal candidate. Longtime Attorney General and now two-term Governor of a Red/ trending Purple southern state who has won statewide in years that saw the GOP elect Presidents and Senators. Traditional moderate Democrat with never a hint of a scandal, he was just elected head of the National Governor's Association.
The one problem is that he is smart and probably doesn’t want the job. He has openly stated that he has no interest in going to Washington as a US Senator, much to the dismay of the state party.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | December 13, 2021 1:00 PM |
It was Black voters in the South (specifically Black female voters in the South) who handed Biden the nomination.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 13, 2021 2:32 PM |
It would be completely dependent on how good of a campaigner AOC is. She’s already wearing “woke” on her lapels, so that’s a big hindrance, but she’s also been massively caricatured. Her running a great campaign could change a lot of soft opinions.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 13, 2021 2:34 PM |
It's not racist to say that black voters got Biden the win, not necessarily the nomination. Black voters are responsible for Biden getting the nom in Texas but otherwise they didn't overwhelmingly give Biden the nom in other states, largely because young black voters were behind Sanders, so in states like CA and MN, Biden didn't do as well with the black voting demographic.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 13, 2021 2:49 PM |

Kamala had some love among a select few in the HBCU crowd, but Kamala is not some beloved figure among black people. Kamala has a very specific base.

He seems like he’s probably got Irish or Scots heritage. “Bashir”? Come on.

R116 Joy Reid is religious and has a history of homophobia. Sounds like a standard black person to me. And, yes, the climate on social media and news programs led by black people like Joy were definitely lobbying for Kamala. Now fuck off, you lying prick.

Andy won a lot of people over in the early days of Covid. He held a daily press conference that was must see TV here in Kentucky. I was especially impressed with him lashing out at employers pre-lockdown who weren't following safety protocols. His approval ratings soared up into the 80s. This must have panicked the opposition, because they immediately fired up the anti-mask brigade, lawsuits from businesses, protests over school closings, and anything else they could do to counteract his policies to fight Covid. As a result, our case rate skyrocketed and Andy's approval tumbled. But he stood firm that saving lives was much more important to him than staying in office.
Is he a viable presidential candidate? Not sure if I'd go that far. But I truly believe he's a genuinely compassionate person, and he's not afraid to fight for what he believes in.
