Does Sex and The City people hates Asian and gay?

Back in the first movie, Carrie was interviewing for an assistant and there was a very accomplished Asian guy up for the job. But Carrie rejected him because he was wearing heels. Isn't that discrimination based on sexual orientation?

Even in the new reboot, there was a scene where Miranda's professor was getting robbed. The Asian guy was portrayed as femmy and just screamed, while courageous Miranda stepped into and chase away the robbers. Then, there was a scene of gay Stanford making a scene about not letting the "help" sitting close to the coffin, even though she was very close with Big. All these scenes make me feel Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King have a certain perception about gays and Asians. Even in this day and age, they cannot let go of this prejudice. It bent over backward to pander to Blacks and Non-Binary, but still bashed Gays and Asians. I don't feel this wokeness is sincere. Oh and BTW, Straight Podcast guy Bobby Lee is portrayed as this gross Asian dude who apparently is super open about jerking off publicly. WTH? No wonder Kim Cattrall stayed away from this backward racist, homophobic mess.

You could, you know, not watch.

by Anonymousreply 1December 11, 2021 1:58 PM

And let this anti Asian, anti Gay be broadcasted and enabling more discrimination? Nonsense. Many Flyovers watch this mess, if they think homophobia can fly in woke NY, they are gonna be even worse about it. Tch Tch tch, shame on you Sarah Jessica Parker

I'm baizuo, I don't give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2021 2:04 PM

R2) But yet you slam people who don’t live on the East-West coast. Isn’t that some type of hypocrisy since you are such a social justice warrior? I try to be very attune to Asian racism, since I have one upstairs and of course I watch for anti-gay discrimination and I have seen none on this show. But since you probably live in a 450 Sq foot, 5th floor walk up continue on with your pretentious bullshit.

I have no intention of watching the reboot. I've had sufficient.

But for anyone still thinking of SATC as some incredibly progressive-minded accomplishment, then or now, look again. The original show gave pretty short shrift to lesbians (and female bisexuals: remember Samantha's same-sex affair)? It was much worse to gay men, who existed only to carry purses, flatter, and prop up the heroines. No offense to the late, charming Willie Garson, but the Stanford Blatch character was embarrassing. In general, SATC had a caveman's approach to gender roles, class, and economics.

I can't even address the original SATC's racism, but that's been addressed better by POC elsewhere.

I'm a gay man. Gay men behind the scenes can, in fact, be part of the problem. Michael Patrick King, an openly gay man, appears to have huge issues with internalized homophobia and it's manifest whenever the subject arises.

Do Sex and The City people hate Asians and gays?

by Anonymousreply 6December 11, 2021 2:20 PM

HMMM, the anti-Asian violence, etc. seems to be concentrated on the coasts, in the "liberal" cities of NY, LA,SF. I don't recall reading about an elderly Asian woman being punched in Omaha or Butte. So, R2, stop with your hypocritical pontificating and get your own house together and realize that the education needs to happen in the " all-holy" coastal cities. And BTW, where is SATC produced and written? Where is this storyline discrimination originating? Hmm?

by Anonymousreply 7December 11, 2021 2:23 PM

Why do people expect show characters to always say and do the right thing? We as humans are deeply flawed, and it only makes sense to be attracted to on screen characters that are equally flawed. What’s the point of watching people who are super smart, highly analytical, and perfect? Nobody would tune in.

Some of my favorite characters are Tony Montana, Hannibal Lecter, and Dexter Morgan. And they’re far from being perfect or politically correct.

I watched the first episode and was surprised that in spite all of the woke acknowledgements, they included the scene where Charlotte says something about "since I rescued you" and her adopted Asian daughter replies "Do you mean me or the dog?"

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2021 2:28 PM

R7 = Andrew Ngo. BTW, show me that mythical elderly Chinese lady in Butte. They never moved there in the first place since the only ones who moved there to work on building the railway 100+ years ago were lynched or tarred and feathered by friendly locals.

by Anonymousreply 10December 11, 2021 2:30 PM

I see that "And Just Like That" has become the talking point and a lightning rod for right wingers in their constant need to foment culture wars.

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2021 2:31 PM

Sex and City peoples isn't hate gay, but been rude for Asian.

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2021 2:40 PM

R4 Don't you mean horseshit?

by Anonymousreply 13December 11, 2021 2:41 PM

BECAUSE R8, They said they will be better this time around with race and LGBTQ stuff, but they are still as racist and anti-gay as the 90's. It was all for show. It showed the true color of Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker as elitist, xenophobic, homophobic people who got dressed up in a veneer of glamour. It is 2021, If they do not get it, they never will.

by Anonymousreply 14December 11, 2021 2:47 PM

I was waiting for this one. Is Lily an asian stereotype with the piano skills? Stanford and Anthony were 'we're not all like that' for me in the original run. There were also a lot fewer LGBT characters on TV in 2000 as well. In 2021, they are bitchy queen representation.

[quote] Does Sex and The City people hates Asian and gay?

Dey sho does, Rochester!

by Anonymousreply 16December 11, 2021 2:50 PM

When did Mario Cantone first appear?

I don't know guys. Stanford and Anthony paired up like knowing the two gay people you know will be soulmates. They complain about that on TikTok.

[quote]But Carrie rejected him because he was wearing heels. Isn't that discrimination based on sexual orientation?

Assuming that he's gay because of that is the real issue.

As Professional Editor person I hate Original Poster and must mock!

by Anonymousreply 19December 11, 2021 3:52 PM

R5- GIRLS was FAR WORSE when it came to its depiction of gay men. Elijah was a STOCK FAGGOT character. He was extremely-

SCENEY

QUEENY and

BITCHY

A low key gay male would not earn his keep. They needed a gay character who would make bitchy remarks about Hannah's weight and the clothes she wore and they could talk about cute/hot guys- in some ways like the eunuch Will on Will And Grace.

by Anonymousreply 20December 11, 2021 3:57 PM

R18 I did not say he was gay, he was definitely not heteronormative from the way he talks, and that was why she rejected his candidacy.

by Anonymousreply 21December 11, 2021 4:08 PM

That was before they were WOKE!

by Anonymousreply 22December 11, 2021 4:11 PM

No sex where man go up into the man in the city.

by Anonymousreply 23December 11, 2021 4:50 PM

Don't horses that are no longer useful go to the chop suey factory?

by Anonymousreply 24December 11, 2021 5:25 PM

I like Stanford. God bless the show for being a head of the curve on gay characters. And it's kind of easy to hold TV shows to un-filmable standards of representation, etc.. I just think the intervening years have brought some push back on the gay bestie idea.

by Anonymousreply 25December 11, 2021 6:51 PM

No fats , no fems, and no damn Asians!

by Anonymousreply 26December 11, 2021 9:00 PM

More roles for POC ( read-black). Because we need more black representation on television.

by Anonymousreply 27December 11, 2021 9:14 PM

Once again starving for representation

by Anonymousreply 28December 11, 2021 9:28 PM

This is so stupid. The Asian applicant in the first movie said he had some high-brow degree from some high-brow school (I don't remember the details, something along the lines of a Yale law , or a Masters in Business), and was applying for an assistant job that amounted to sorting through gifts and emails of a low-brow writer. It's not like he was someone with that background applying for the assistant to someone like Steven King, a Nora Roberts, or any other top selling authors. That might make sense. The high heels sort of underlined the questions of why someone like that would apply for a job like that. It wasn't his sartorial choice, but more of a wtf is going on with this dude.

by Anonymousreply 29December 11, 2021 9:45 PM

Oh OK so being a non heteronormative man is sick and a ground for dismissal? Good to know.
