The Official Monkees Appreciation Thread
I was six at the height of the Monkees craze and sure, through the year liked their hits. I've been taking a deep dive into the catalouge and I was amazed I hadn't before.
My God. They have many great songs besides the top hits! I put on their albums front to back and haven't found a song a didn't like. Mostly, though what stood out was that Mickey Dolenz is an incredible singer, very expressive with a unique tone.
Do you have any Monkees favorite songs? Any stories? I'm obsessed! TIA!
This version of Nine Times Blue is so sweet.

"Valerie"
I am same age but really don't remember watching them in original primetime so much as when they went immediately into successful syndication on the old "UHF" local TV channels in the late 1960s-early 1970s on Saturday mornings. Good times, and very of their time.

Because I didn't care for their show at the time it aired or on reruns I didn't get into their non-hit songs. The Monkees have a lot of really good songs, some very experimental, melody-wise or musically which sound like something Brian Wilson was aiming for. I think the Monkees catalouge is far superiorthan the Beach Boys.

"The Girl I Knew Somewhere" has always been my favorite. Written by Mike Nesmith, it was the B-side to "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" and didn't get released on any albums until the various greatest hits compilations. Per Wikipedia, "... 'The Girl I Knew Somewhere' was the first song recorded by the Monkees containing instruments performed by the band members."
And in this video, we get the extra benefit of the lovely Julie Newmar.

A long time ago, I read Davy Jones' autobiography, long out of print. He said that he called Mickey "Skillet Face." Also that he had disgusting table manners. But nothing can change the fact that Mickey Dolenz had a great, kind of off-key but distinctive voice and never made you cringe with secondhand embarrassment, unlike a certain Artful Dodger.

I read an interview with Peter Tork once who said they all could play and sing, but their real talents weren't the ones featured in the group. He said if they'd done everything strictly on talents, it would have been Davy on drums, Mickey as lead singer exclusively, Peter on lead guitar, and Mike on bass.
You can tell from the records that they were talented guys. Nobody bats an eye these days when a record company creates a group--it doesn't mean the individual members don't have talent. Otherwise, K-POP wouldn't exist at all.

Strange timing to hear this news of Mike Nesmith's passing ... something compelled me to read up on the Monkees last night. I can remember watching the TV show on Saturday mornings when it was in reruns in the 1970s. As a young boy, all I knew was that I was jealous that four boys got to live together without having parents around, and I wanted Micky Dolenz to be my best friend ... he made me feel funny. And now Micky is the only one left!

I saw Davy Jones in person one time, in the 1970s when our school took a field trip to UCLA for some Renaissance Fair type of event. He was there to present an award to someone, in the huge Royce Hall, some actor or contest winner. He was late and they had to kind of ad lib the show for a while until he got there. He was shorter than I expected him to be.

While I'm sure I heard their songs playing in the background in early childhood, my first real exposure to them came in the early 70s when I was about 10 and the series aired on Saturday mornings.
I thought the show was a perfect Saturday morning series -- mindless, nonsensical, stupid and fun with some really good songs. It was good for a kids show.
It wasn't until years later that I learned The Monkees had originally been in primetime on NBC on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. It aired for two seasons! I was stunned to read that cause this show seems too dumb to be a show aimed at adults. But it was clearly following in the mold of Hard Days Night and Help, so I guess it had an audience in the mid 1960s.

The show was made by Screen Gems, and if you watch it carefully, you can feel that Screen Gems vibe. But surprisingly, The Monkees is actually in some ways more sophisticated and avant garde than other Screen Gems shows like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Hazel, The Partridge Family, Gidget, The Flying Nun, The Donna Reed Show, etc. Even the opening credits and closing credits of The Monkees are truly works of art.

I'm thinking maybe Davy Jones called Micky Dolenz 'Skillet Face" as a term of endearment. He may have been just being cheeky when he said Dolenz had "disgusting table manners." Anyway, I remember a photo taken by the photographer Norman Seeff that showed Jones, Dolenz and Tork in some nondescript room. Jones has pulled his pants down and is mooning the camera (he had a very unimpressive ass). Dolenz and Tork are seating on either side of him, and they all are laughing. I guess they liked cutting up. They seemed to be getting along pretty well, although maybe in that picture they were drunk or stoned.
Dolenz seemed to harbor hostility towards Mike Nesmith. On some tv show about the Monkees he sneered about Nesmith: "HE wasn't the heartthrob. I was." Davy Jones could be quite a dick. But then none of the the Monkees were particularly likeable, as far as I know. I liked them as a band, though. They made some great music.

I've the audition tapes of Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones when they were trying out for the Monkees. Nesmith came off as a weirdo, moving around, acting strangely. Davy seemed sweet and nice. The person doing the audition asked him "What's your bag?" and he said something like "I don't get it." "What's your bag" was a dumb hippie way of asking what you did, what you were into. The guy then asked him "what kind of sound do you make" and he said "I make a terrible sound!" He was cute and funny. I never saw the auditions of Dolenz and Tork. I wonder how they behaved. Probably not very well.

Davy was in the original Broadway cast of Oliver as the Artful Dodger. The cast, including Davy, appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show as was pretty common for Broadway shows. The night they appeared happened to be the exact same night a certain British quartet made their history making debut on American television - The Beatles.
“I watched the Beatles from the side of the stage,” Jones recalled in the book Right Here on Our Stage Tonight! Ed Sullivan’s America. “I saw the girls going crazy, and I said to myself, ‘This is it, I want a piece of that.’”
I always thought it was a cool coincidence that he ended up on the same show as The Beatles.

I was a kid in the Monkees' heyday and believe me, girls were mad for Davy and pretty much Davy only. He was the teen idol of the four. I secretly thought Peter was cute. But it was Davy, Davy, Davy the girls wanted. I still think they hired Davy to add a Beatles-esque look and sound to the group.

Family members don't want to talk about the cause of death because Nesmith was a Christian Scientist. He had quadruple bypass surgery 4 years ago but only went to doctors "when he had to" (don't most people?). His manager would sometimes force him to go.
It's such a bizarre religion--followers force themselves into denial about the fact that they are dying when everyone knows the truth but have to pretend it's all fine. If you die it's because you didn't have enough faith, shame on you.

I've been binging on their show and it's strange. I know it's supposed to be madcap with quirky editing but often scenes go on too long, Davy makes weird bored faces and Micky is a great scene stealer. I've seen a few a guest character actors seem to be acting in a whole modern style that stands out in the scenes. It's bizarre. But really is entertaining.
They should be the R&R Hall of Fame.

My little sister had a giant crush on Davy Jones. This was in the early 80s and we were watching the reruns on afternoon TV. She was five years old and had just learned to write, and she was drawing hearts with "I Love Davy" scrawled in them using crayons and scrap paper. I guess he really was the ultimate non-threatening boy.

Any atheist who can put up with a Christian Scientist couldn't possibly be a jerk. I suppose the reverse is true as well, but Mike was awfully prickly with the producer, even at the very beginning.

[quote] I read an interview with Peter Tork once who said they all could play and sing, but their real talents weren't the ones featured in the group. He said if they'd done everything strictly on talents, it would have been Davy on drums, Mickey as lead singer exclusively, Peter on lead guitar, and Mike on bass.
I can understand Davy not being on drums - as the cutest "Paul McCartney" of the group, he had to be up front and center.

I much preferred Mike Nesmith's version of "Different Drum" rather than cutesy, jingly Linda Ronstadt version. "Different Drum" was definitely a "guy" song. She sound kind of ridiculous singing the lyrics, which are obviously from a guy's point of view and include "now I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty." She did the same thing with Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk." It was a cynical guy song, but her version turned it into a bouncy, girlish little tune.

The auditions for the Monkees are on YouTube, and when you watch the four boys mixed in with the ones who didn't make it, you can tell why they got cast. In particular, Jones and Dolenz just pop off the screen. Tork and Nesmith both have a quirky charm, too: It was a great mix they came up with.

On those screen tests that R122 posted, the blond guy in the hat during Micky's audition is Michael Burns, who previously starred in Wagon Train. My sister had a huge crush on him, as he became a teen idol himself.

Michael Burns was a teeny tiny type like Jones. I think he was only 5'3.

Jeez, Michael Burns left Hollywood not long after the Monkees audtions and got a PhD in history from Yale. He taught at Mt Holyoke for decades and wrote acclaimed academic books. Talk about a sliding doors moment, not getting the Monkees role.

Some weird things in that audition reel at R122 -- Screen Gems signed Davy Jones right after his Ed Sullivan appearance (and award-winning Artful Dodger) and I read they knew they wanted him but needed to find the three other ones. I guess they still needed the reel and have him pretend he didn't know anything about singing or dancing?
Also, there's a steely feisty edge to Mike in the first few minutes of the youtube. They should have known he'd be trouble, fighting the producers from the start. Oh well, hind sight is everything. He's more charismatic than most of the others and very handsome.

The Monkees, angry at not having creative control of their songs and at the way they were being handled, stupidly refused to record "Sugar, Sugar." Don Kirshner (he knew a hit record when he heard it) wanted them to do it but they snottily refused not to. What a shame. The song was then recorded by a REALLY fake band, "The Archies." They were CARTOONS. But they were certainly more cooperative than the Monkees. Of course "Sugar, Sugar" became a monster hit; it was #1 on the Billboard chart for four weeks. Such a pity the Monkees didn't do it. It was perfect for Davy Jone's voice. Whenever I hear that song I imagine Davy Jones singing it in his silky smooth teen idol voice, "Sugah...aw, honey, honey. You are mah candy guuuurl, and you got me wantin' youuu..."

I didn’t know that about “sugar sugar.” Davy would indeed have been perfect for it, although Micky would have sounded good as well. Oh well, they had a lot of other hits. Davy did sing the treacly “cuddly toy.”

Basically Mike was the downfall of the Monkees. His dissatisfaction must have been palpable. If he wanted to be taken seriously as a musician he shouldn’t have auditioned to be in a fake band on a goofy show. He was an ass from day one. And not using Stills as a producer? Dumb move Mike.

Mike had the personality of a producer, not a musician. His later career proves this. I agree that he should never have auditioned for the Monkees if he was so desperate to be in control.

[quote]Rose Marie was on one episode and said, "When she finished she had lice."
She was in 2 episodes, r143, Monkees in a Ghost Town, and Monkee Mother. I can't find any evidence of the quote you attribute to her. Where did you hear it? Carl Ballantine, another old veteran, had little patience for the Monkees' antics, exclaiming "I hate these kids" in an outtake from Find The Monkees episode.
[quote]I didn’t know that about “sugar sugar.” Davy would indeed have been perfect for it, although Micky would have sounded good as well. Oh well, they had a lot of other hits. Davy did sing the treacly “cuddly toy.”
"Cuddly Toy" becomes a lot less treacly once you listen to the lyrics, r145.
[quote]You're not the only cuddly toy that was ever enjoyed by any boy You're not the only choo-choo train that was left out in the rain The day after Santa came You're not the only cherry delight that was left out in the night And gave up without a fight
[quote]You’re not the kind of girl to tell your mother The kind of company you keep I never told you not to love no other You must’ve dreamed in your sleep
It's quite dark. No surprise when you know it was written by Harry Nilsson. I mentioned Nesmith's ankylosed fingers at r109. You can see this in the video, as he plays guitar. They were a result of his breaking them as a young man and not having them set (his religion strikes again, though that time it was his mother's decision).

Speaking of Monkee health problems, Micky's drum set-up was unusual because he preferred to play the bass drum with his left foot instead of his right foot, as his right leg was weakened by a childhood bout with polio.
I've often wondered if Davy's incredibly short stature was due to his being a post-war baby in the UK. Food supplies were still scanty for years after the war, and that entire generation of children grew up very small and slim.

Micky Dolenz married a beautiful English girl named Samantha Juste. This is how they got together. He invited her to a party; she got there and the only two people at the party were herself and Micky. Smooth, Micky! But she fell for him and they married. In photos they look like the quintessential young sixties couple in love, both of them long haired, clad in their hippie togs.
