Did Vivien Leigh ever talk about working with Brando and Kazan and the making of "Streetcar?"

I know Brando thought she captured the vulnerable quality of Blanche and was far more sexier and delicate than Jessica Tandy. Does any one of the bios on Vivien Leigh describe her "Streetcar," experience? Apparently Brando never took a tumble with her out of respect for Larry. But what about Gage?

by Anonymousreply 63December 9, 2021 8:46 PM

It's actually spelled Gadge. Leigh took a train cross country from NY to LA with Kazan prior to filming to discuss the film and Blanche. She had a lot of admiration for Brando's acting ability and was even a fan of his imitation of Olivier.

Wow, there are some lazy queens on DL. Brando wrote ONE memoir. Here's a link, you lazy ass.

Brando didn't like her. Leigh had an affair with Kazan.

Brando and Leigh got along all right. She was very fastidious and always smelled fresh; Brando would rib her about her compulsion to be clean and fragrant at all times. She said something to him like "Don't you like to smell nice?" And he said something like, naw, all he'd do to stay clean was to throw up a glob of spit and run under it. At any rate, there was no real friction between them. And Leigh was very amused by Brando's imitations of her husband Laurence Olivier. Apparently he could do impressions of Olivier "perfectly."

One very quick Google brought up this article which at least cites to Brando’s autobiography(ies). Some of the statements attributed to Brando here are verified. I didn’t check the article’s actual sources.

Actually, I read it in some bio of Vivien Leigh. At least I think it was a bio of Leigh. Anyway, that was the gist of it. I can't remember the exact words. It was a long time ago.

I know it’s sacrilege, but I prefer Jessica Lange’s Blanche to Leigh’s.

Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 17December 7, 2021 3:38 AM

No love for Ann-Margret, r17? She would have been a good Maggie the Cat.

by Anonymousreply 18December 7, 2021 3:42 AM

Eh. I find her kind of fake in most things. I mean, she’s a professional and she’s good in a few movies, but her Blanche doesn’t make me feel either one thing or another.

It’s competent.

by Anonymousreply 19December 7, 2021 3:59 AM

So excited for Billy Porter's inevitable turn as Blanche Du Bois.

by Anonymousreply 20December 7, 2021 4:05 AM

Why would you say that?

by Anonymousreply 21December 7, 2021 4:13 AM

In Richard Schickel's biography of Kazan (2006), he states that Kazan claimed to have had an affair with Leigh during the filming of the movie. In 2009 the critic David Thomson wrote that Kazan had an affair with Kim Hunter during the Broadway run of "Streetcar".

by Anonymousreply 25December 7, 2021 4:43 AM

To her great credit Leigh made a secondary career out of being chronically dickmatized.

by Anonymousreply 26December 7, 2021 5:21 AM

Leigh was a nympho. She slept with every guy she encountered.

by Anonymousreply 27December 7, 2021 5:28 AM

R17 you are fucking retarded. That is all.3

by Anonymousreply 28December 7, 2021 5:30 AM

Kazan was rumored to have affairs with Kim Hunter and Julie Harris. I am a huge Kazan/Brando fan and have never heard about Viv till now and I still think Brando and her reallly did screw. Brando not bedding the wife of one of his "rivals" out of respect? Haha...sure thing.

by Anonymousreply 29December 7, 2021 5:33 AM

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Leigh fucked Kazan or Brando. She had a strong sexual appetite and she was the most desirable woman alive during the '40s and early '50s. Knowing what Brando's cock felt like inside her would have added dimension to her portrayal of Blanche.

Leigh was the most beautiful, sensual woman of her time until Elizabeth Taylor reached maturity. It's little wonder everyone wanted to bang her. I read a book that described her as "the 1940 jerk off dream of every red-blooded American man." I'd think that was very limiting as everyone who saw GWTW wanted to fuck her.

by Anonymousreply 32December 8, 2021 10:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 37December 9, 2021 12:13 AM

What I read in an interview with Karl Malden is that Marlon liked Vivien Leigh better because her Stella was sexier but Malden thought Tandy was more vulnerable and heart breaking.

by Anonymousreply 38December 9, 2021 12:28 AM

R38 its in the extra's of the dvd release. In an interview Malden liked Jessi better and considered her sexier, but Brando felt the opposite. I think he always saw Tandy as more school marmish.

by Anonymousreply 39December 9, 2021 12:31 AM

R39, Malden criticized Leigh for being (as he put it) rude to his wife.

by Anonymousreply 40December 9, 2021 12:39 AM

R39 really? Did not know that. I knew the Broadway Streetcar cast had lingering resentments towards Leigh because they loved Tandy (except Brando who seemed to get along with her better than the rest despite what any have specced ). Even Kazan the asshole still referred to Leigh as not terribly talented. Fuckwad.

by Anonymousreply 41December 9, 2021 1:08 AM

Olivier said the same. That she was not talented on stage. That films were where she shined.

by Anonymousreply 42December 9, 2021 3:30 AM

[quote] Vivien was English.

by Anonymousreply 43December 9, 2021 3:38 AM

R42, Olivier NEVER SAID THAT. He was one of her biggest fans. It's been widely written about the first time he watched GWTW in a private screening and was incredibly impressed and fantastically jealous of her talent as a screen actress. He was just as admiring of her stage work, particularly her divisive Lady Macbeth which has only grown in stature over the years. Oh, to have seen it live...

by Anonymousreply 45December 9, 2021 4:16 AM

R45, what did they say about her performance?

by Anonymousreply 46December 9, 2021 4:21 AM

She was tiny.

Tiny of stature, tiny high-pitched voice.

Larry wore a large fake nose. Larry's nose arrived on stage, then she arrived, then the rest of Larry arrived.

by Anonymousreply 47December 9, 2021 4:31 AM

R47, LAME, not to mention inaccurate and BORING.

by Anonymousreply 48December 9, 2021 4:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 49December 9, 2021 4:41 AM

I can't give you a source for this, but I'm sure I read once that Brando had Leigh and Olivier (separately) on the same day at some house party. David Niven, maybe? It could well have been after the filming of Streetcar, though.
