In Britain, acting has become one of "the professions", something suitable for an intelligent and artsy young person from a wealthy or aristocratic family. Becoming an actor-writer is considered a respectable use for an Oxbridge education, and if you're a bit more famous than your classmates who went into banking or became CEOs, you're probably as wealthy.
Rich kids who aren't smart enough to become actors become models or "influencers", until they find a suitable spouse. It's taken the place of shoving useless younger children into the church.

Meryl Streep is not overly intelligent. She picks up accents easily and is a good mimic which leads people to assume she is smart.. She went to the Yale School of Drama which is not the same as Yale. She does the old Gypsy Rose Lee trick of reading the New York Times Review of Books and pretending to have read the book. I have caught her up a few times.

I'm glad that I'm seeing posters list at least somewhat intelligent performers. For the last decade the trend has been to insist that any popular female sex symbol is actually secretly very intelligent. Britney is actually very smart! And so is Kim Kardashian! And Paris Hilton! Also Anna Nicole Smith was really a genius because she was in on the joke! Interestingly I don't see people insist that every male beefcake is also an unacknowledged Einstein.

Colton Underwood.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 6, 2021 6:26 PM |
Degrees from well to do schools don't make people intelligent by default. Gives them an overinflated ego, sure, but an engineering degree from Harvard doesn't indicate anything more than above average competence and a strong drive to work hard or study.
John Waters, who is often listed in these kinds of threads, did not go to college - he got kicked out of NYU. He comes off as much smarter than Meryl or the pretentious Jodie Foster.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 6, 2021 6:38 PM |
R74 Not true in most cases. The SAT works like an IQ test and it’s correlation to other IQ tests is about 0.7. SO an engineering degree from Harvard means IQ 125+ in most cases as a conservative estimate.

I didn't know about IQ/SAT scores. My cousin scored 1600 in the days before prep testing, went on to an engineering degree from MIT so that checks out. 152 IQ, genes can be so unfair.

"Jeff Goldblum. Supposedly a genius-level IQ. "
He had this TV show "The World According to Jeff Goldblum", and didn't come off as very smart. He was supposed to be looking at sciency stuff, and he was constantly talking over the experts in the subject of the week, in a slow, self-absorbed way, and he came off as being so uninterested in anything besides himself that any IQ he may have was wasted.

D-list Scots actor Sean Biggerstaff, though sadly I rather think his intelligence has worked to his career detriment.
His Twitter activity is constant, and hyper focused on Labour politics and how the British government on both benches is a shambles. He’s right in almost all he says and agrees with, but my goodness does it make for depressing reading. His social media doesn’t ever show himself having fun or looking cute or doing anything creative, just forevet talking about political woes or making the occasional philosophical observation.
Switched-on bloke and nice-looking too, but he perhaps shouldn’t have chosen to become a screen actor by vocation, in this vapid day and age. He would have made a more effective and powerful gonzo journalist, political activist, or even a satirical comedian.

People like Mayim Byalik, Dan Grimaldi of "The Sopranos", and Brian May seem to be real-deal intelligentsia, but went into showbiz because it's more fun and more lucrative than academia.
And then there's 1960s satirical songmaster Tom Lehrer, who quit showbiz to become a professor of mathematics, when he decided that the news wasn't funny any more.
