Cinema for Gays: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991)
A classic of cable TV in the 90s, this film taught us all the value of lying on your resume, stealing from petty cash, committing credit card fraud, desecration of a corpse, and matching up five horrid 80s fashions into one colorful outfit.
But seriously, who remembers/loves this movie?

I grew up enthralled with the concept of petty cash because of this movie, only to find it’s never existed in any of my jobs.
The dishes are done, man!

Josh Charles might have been my first crush (tied with Noah Wylie).

Both at work and at home, if I start to get multiple requests from people, or things start to pile up, I yell out “I’m on it Rose!”
Once in awhile someone gets the reference.

A cult classic!!! This film is absolutely brilliant. People quote line after line. Hysterical.

Have you ever had a 48 hour orgasm?

Everyone wishes they had Rose as a boss.

Talks like she’s chewing her face.

I like it much better than The Devil Wears Prada.

The uniforms-as-fashion fashion show at Sue Ellen’s home. Loved it.

Always thought it was creepy that Kenny had a nude Samantha Fox poster considering she is the spitting image of Christina Applegate his on screen sister!

She should have fucked Rose's boyfriend when he came on to her.

R12 And "VERY" tender!
I think Rose is the gayest part about this movie. She definitely has a homo son somewhere. Maybe he's the one she pulled strings to get in to Vassar.

A great movie. I remember seeing it in a theater when it first came up thinking it was not what I was expecting. It was good, but a little rough around the edges, but it's gotten better with each viewing. I always watch the entire movie when I find it flipping through channels.
I wonder what Sue Ellen would be up to these days.

If Miranda Priestly is the Wicked Witch of the West, then Rose Lindsey is Glinda.

Love this movie and i used to rent it from the video store all the time. Fuck Carolyn and her snobby attitude.

I'm another who loves this movie. The movie was very well cast - from Applegate to the cunty receptionist. It's too bad it was dismissed by snobbish critics when it first came out. But it developed a following due to being shown frequently on HBO over the years and on home media releases.
Here's a great oral history of the movie from Buzzfeed from several years ago that's worth the read if you enjoy the movie.

"Sue Ellen: Have you ever had a 48-hour orgasm?"
"No, I've never been to Santa Barbara!"

Joanna Cassidy steals this movie. Poor Sue Ellen, commuting every day from Santa Clarita to downtown LA

The premise of the movie was moronic. Why would Sue Ellen think having to get a job to support that family was a preferable alternative to calling their mother back from Australia? It's not like working all summer would've allowed Swell the freedom she craved... quite the opposite.

If you haven't watched the movie with a live audience, you haven't really seen it at all. I will NEVER forget the screaming laughter in the first five minutes of the movie when the mother said "I have had a very rough 36 years on this earth", even though the actress was clearly in her mid-50s.

I realized Applegate could really act when I saw this. She was so different than Kelly Bundy and I didn't see Kelly at all.
Most child and teen actors suck...they have one role, themselves.

Loved it and love Christina Applegate. OP's intro was really funny. I think it's on my watch list currently on HBO. I need to watch it again.

Yes, when I saw this again, I thought Applegate should have been a bigger star. She could have easily been cast in all the roles that were given to Cameron Diaz. Glad her career rebounded in the 2000s.
Josh Charles was very cute in this and in Threesome which I watched numerous times.

Wait, Josh Charles was in this?!
I saw it many times when it was new. Haven’t seen it since then. I should probably revisit it. I know it’s readily available on streaming platforms and I believe there’s a blu ray.
Forever seared into my memory are “You are a paragon,” “have you ever had a 48-hour orgasm?” and “Diamonds are forever.” God, I hated that little shit.

They had good chemistry in The Sweetest Thing.
