Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark and New Kids came across as minstrel acts aping black culture and slang. They got a lot of flack for good reason. On the other hand, Eminem came across as more authentic and he rapped about his experience growing up poor in a trailer park. Eminem had a black following early on before he got more mainstream and more over the top.

R167 that’s an excellent point! As you probably know early minstrel shows were done by white performers. I guess that makes Shady the Al Jolson of the rap world. What I am saying is that from early American history there was a usurping of a black performance by white men. But that’s not to say there isn’t a place for the poor white man in urban America to express themselves in rap. But his problem is that you can’t just be the angry man into your forties. Otherwise we would all rap.
