We currently have two in our household and every year we purchase the Costco Executive Membership for $120. This year we did go ahead and renew, but wondered if we really needed the Executive Membership? Last year, we only earned $87. What are your thoughts? Do you shop at Costco? Do you think the membership is worth $120. I am just very frugal, so I always overthink spending my money.
It it Worth Purchasing A Membership at Costco?

So you spent $120 to save $87?
Sounds like a great deal! Why stop?

[quote] I am just very frugal
Then why the fuck do you have two memberships in your household? Your can use the other’s membership and split the cost. Second, why the Executive membership? Get the basic one especially if you don’t go to Costco much. The Executive one pays for itself after a few trips for many members.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 4, 2021 11:26 PM |
R1 last year was our first year we did not spend enough to pay for our membership. That is why I am second guessing my decision. That was my thought exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 4, 2021 11:27 PM |
R3 we have ONE membership. Not two.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 4, 2021 11:27 PM |
R4 I meant R2
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 4, 2021 11:27 PM |
You sound mentally challenged. You may qualify for state assistance - someone to shop on your behalf.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 4, 2021 11:29 PM |
We do the $60 one. I haven't stepped foot in one since COVID began but I get enough from online (including Flonase which is way cheaper) plus the gas that it does pay for itself and then some.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 4, 2021 11:29 PM |
Just an FYI, if you try to downgrade your membership (which it sounds like you should) make sure that whoever is the “primary card holder” has to be the one to go in and request the change. My husband set up our membership and when I tried to downgrade it when it was time to renew they wouldn’t let me. I couldn’t believe it was so archaic.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 4, 2021 11:30 PM |
R6 really? Are you projecting? I think so…
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 4, 2021 11:31 PM |
R6 by your previous posts you sound like a pompous, arrogant fat man looking to project his miserable self on others, because he lacks self worth. That just about sums it up.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 4, 2021 11:33 PM |
Get the basic membership, you dumb cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 4, 2021 11:35 PM |
[quote]It it Worth Purchasing A Membership at Costco?....We currently have two in our household
Two people or two memberships? "Currently have two" is a weird way to say you live with your significant other. Is one of you expecting? Are you looking for roommates?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 4, 2021 11:37 PM |
You guys are so ridiculous it’s a thread based on your reasoning. My husband and I already are rethinking our damn membership. I’m not asking for financial fucking guidance from a few of you dumb mean cunts. I know what to do… I am wondering if others feel Costco is worth it. Sorry, if you felt I needed advice. It’s called opening dialogue.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 4, 2021 11:40 PM |
R12 I get it now. Two people.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 4, 2021 11:40 PM |

This is asking for advice.
Here’s another tip: take a writing and reading comprehension class.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 4, 2021 11:41 PM |
R15 ok. I hear you all. I posted fast and I should have re read my post. You are absolutely correct.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 4, 2021 11:43 PM |
OP is decidedly a Sam’s Club-type poster.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 4, 2021 11:45 PM |
R17 lmao. OP here yes I felt a little triggered. However, I do agree my post sounded very crazy. Maybe Muriel will close my thread. We all have shitty days. I’ll refrain from posting until I can get my ass straight with writing and comprehension.

I canceled my (Executive) membership while I was only trying to downgrade my membership back to the original level (I was frustrated and exasperated with the process). I wish I would have kept a basic membership, even though I didn't use it all that much. Neither of the locations in my city are very convenient for me, and the hoarding that was taking place because of COVID really left a bad association in my mind with the company, even though I'd have to blame the customers. Anyway, I would have kept a membership if I would have thought through some of the products and services I'd lose access to. Bottom line: downgrade your membership unless you have a specific need for some of the perks of the Executive membership.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 4, 2021 11:50 PM |
Ar…archaic?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 4, 2021 11:51 PM |
For a 2% cash back deal on most purchases you would have to spend $6000 to make back the cost (or $3000 for the cost above the regular $60 membership.). I suppose if you all all of your groceries there, and pallets full of Select-a-Size paper towels, bath towel sets in a bag, appliances, safes, office supplies, and lawn equipment it could be worth considering. But who buys all of that at Costco? It's a shitty shopping experience, the food selection is very specific, the stores are overflowing with people, I want to poison the free food samples zombies, and it's all so very Midwestern frau.
[quote]Costco also says that an Executive Membership qualifies you for discounts on Costco services like check printing and identity protection.
And of course there's that^^^. Who under the age of 100 doesn't want check printing services and identity protection plans?
My one time membership I bought a half dozen odd items not available from other stores but it was nothing I couldn't live without. The experience of shopping with long queues and swarms of people a cut or two above Walmart people didn't endear me either.
If you have certain types of small business or a huge family or organized lots of dinners for volunteer groups...there are situations where it makes sense, but for for one or two gay men I question that it's ever worth it unless they have odd tastes in food.

Are you Asian?
Then you must to be in compliance.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 4, 2021 11:55 PM |
Why do I even visit these Costco threads? I think I am still mad at a time years ago when I went there, filled a cart, and got to check out where they tried to sell me a membership.
It felt like such a scam. They could have made it clear when I walked in that this was a membership only store.
I just walked away leaving my stuff in the cart and on the conveyer.
And hearing that they charge so much for membership but do not give the discounts to make up for it, is weirdly satisfying.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 4, 2021 11:56 PM |
R22 nope, I cannot blame my crazy post on my ethnicity. I just did not read my post, before I posted.

I got an Executive Membership when I was buying a new car and was eligible for a $3,000 rebate. I didn’t renew it.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 5, 2021 12:02 AM |
R23 also seems like a dim bulb.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 5, 2021 12:13 AM |
I've never bothered with the Executive. The main thing is having a single membership at a single address. The membership only makes sense if you make it pay and get something beyond that. Some things are not real bargains at Costco, but others are. You should reconsider and perhaps see if you can get more out of the membership. They often have good deals on Apple products, some of their canned goods are excellent buys---I get Cento tomatoes, V-8 juice and some other things at huge discounts. Cleaning products are good values there, along with paper goods. Their travel service can be good, too. They've generally had the best prices for rental cars. Wine can be a very good buy---I can usually find liquor at similar prices from a regular liquor store.

[quote]I want to poison the free food samples zombies
I hate so much that this made a comeback. Also, it was nice when they stopped having those annoying third party sales reps in the store due to Covid concerns. They would bother you about signing up to a new phone carrier or cable. However, they're baaack too!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 5, 2021 12:50 AM |
The money we save on our pets' medications at Costco pharmacy prices makes up for the cost of membership (though I really should downgrade from Executive to basic.)
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 5, 2021 1:20 AM |
I just can't see how these membership clubs could be beneficial unless you have a sizable family to deal with.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 5, 2021 1:22 AM |
Is the membership worth it. Yes.
Is the executive membership worth it? For myself yes and then some, though my Costco has a full liquor selection and it counts to the 2%. I made almost $200 last year, plus the $180-ish I got from my Citibank Costco card.
If my Costco didn’t have alcohol, then I’d stick with the basic membership.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 5, 2021 1:26 AM |
I should add that my parents and I share a membership.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 5, 2021 1:38 AM |
R28 please stop the judgment of peoples posts. No one nominated you, at least on this thread, to ridicule others stating their thoughts. So either quietly dismiss your fat ass or kindly STFU.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 5, 2021 2:07 AM |
IMO, the question is: Does Costco sell things that you need / want at a fair price? Is it conveniently located to your house? Do you actually go there and make use of the membership?
I wouldn't worry about whether you've spend $X vs. $X cost of membership. Such a small amount of money if you divide it by 12 (months).
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 5, 2021 2:51 AM |
R36 you are absolutely correct. My husband and I decided to cancel our Executive Membership and pay for the inexpensive one.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 5, 2021 2:56 AM |
Exec membership works for us because we are a four person household, buy our gas there, buy kirkland liquor, our meds (prilosec etc), coffee, rent cars a couple of times a year and buy a few other things that are generally 1/2 of retail price. Make a list of what you buy, how often you buy them and do the math.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 5, 2021 3:05 PM |
R32: You're dumb as rocks. Posters have explained how they make this work. You don't have to be a "family with kids" to save at Costco.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 5, 2021 5:51 PM |
As someone pointed out, if you buy a lot of alcohol it pays off.
The real problem is that places like Costco and Walmart are always somewhere away from where people live so you are only going to go once in awhile.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 5, 2021 6:12 PM |
Costco is a scam but I heard they pay the workers a living wage so at least there’s that..
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 5, 2021 6:20 PM |
For a single person, no.
If you buy every year, a tv, a large appliance, large quantities of food, or anything in massive amounts, you can just ask a friend to take you there once a year to stock up. I have a membership, am single, and it is not worth it at all.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 5, 2021 6:33 PM |
Why do you have two memberships? We have costco here in Australia and when you buy a membership for $55 you are allowed another card on your account in someone elses name that is at the same address, hence two memberships for the price of one. Costco is also international in its membership so when visiting Hawaii in the past we have used it there.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 5, 2021 6:39 PM |
R43, read the thread. OP clarified he doesn’t have two memberships. He’s just not a very good writer.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 5, 2021 6:49 PM |
I dont want to read the thread. And yes, this person is a bad writer.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 5, 2021 6:50 PM |
Single person household here. For now, the membership is still worth it, for my needs. I did make a list of things that I buy there (that I don't buy at other stores). I also buy Michelin tires (for car) there. I quit drinking a couple of years ago, but used to buy Kirkland red wines there.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 5, 2021 6:51 PM |
Yes.
We love Costco.
I just ordered a freezer this morning.
