Jogging

Why does it seem every upper middle class white man who is a lawyer/doctor/stockbroker/CPA jog?

I know not every one who fits this category is a jogger, but it seems like there are so may who do.

by Anonymousreply 29December 7, 2021 7:13 PM

Fresh air, away from his home trappings with hopes for a horizontal jog (they probably carry the condom in the jockstrap).

Long hours sitting at the desk. need to stay in shape, gyms are a huge pain really. That's why I run. Can do it anytime I like, even when travelling. Plus stress, you can let your mind go blank when you run.

Trying to run away from the crimes against humanity they have commited

I live across the street from the city's biggest park and try to walk an hour or more every day. The majority of joggers I see are male, roughly mid 20's to mid 40's. About every 4th or 5th jogger is female. Rarely do I see anyone who looks like they could be 50 or older. Do joggers eventually burn out on running? Does your body finally say "Enough!".

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2021 11:22 PM

Most men reach an age where they just decide to let themselves go.

by Anonymousreply 5December 4, 2021 11:30 PM

It creates a great scene in movies to have these types of people jog. In real life they would not jog.

R4 I ran from teenaged years until about 40 then my knees started hurting all the time. I'm now 45 and no way in hell I could run. I do walk every day, though.

by Anonymousreply 7December 4, 2021 11:45 PM

R6 I have worked for or with lawyers, stockbrokers, and CPAs. They were all runners.

by Anonymousreply 8December 4, 2021 11:50 PM

It's how straight people cruise. You get to bounce your titties or cock, get attention.

by Anonymousreply 9December 4, 2021 11:51 PM

Oh I will be 60 in 3 years. No running anymore. Used to run to catch a train regularly.

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2021 11:56 PM

Because they Re successful people. Successful people take care of their health. And, successful people take care of their looks.

My friend kind of ruined his body (got plantar fasciitis) training for and then doing a marathon.

by Anonymousreply 12December 5, 2021 2:11 AM

Not everybody's body is made for running (long distances). Even when I was in elementary school, I could not run around the track over and over. However, I fared surprisingly well on the 50 yard dash.

I ran for about 30 years, from 15 years old to 45 or so, mainly for, as somebody said above, you can check out mentally. It really does not require concentration to jog, which is why joggers make terrible eye witnesses to crime. By the time you realize something nefarious is happening in front of you, it's over. I know – I saw a mugger steal a woman's bag a half block away from me, but I could not recall details about him. My mind was on autopilot. And that was the goal of running for me.

Getting in shape was not why I ran. I've been "fit-fat" most of my life. I hated getting too sweaty. I just liked checking out mentally.

One night a cat darted out from a bush right into my path. I fell onto the curb and broke my tibia. That was the last time I went jogging. I tried fast walking after I healed, but my mind stayed alert for animals and other dangers, and it just stopped being relaxing. Pity, really. I still haven't found a past time that was as mentally calming.

BTW, I am not a lawyer, accountant, stockbroker, or medical doctor. But I have a PhD!

Why do people keep acting as though jogging is some new fitness craze?

R15 That came out in 1977. The same year James Fixx published his best seller on jogging.

You remember. The late James Fixx.

by Anonymousreply 16December 5, 2021 5:33 AM

I saw Beth Jarret's husband running by the lake and sobbing!

Do people who jog still call it jogging? I feel like that became an uncool word.

by Anonymousreply 20December 5, 2021 8:17 AM

YASSSSSSS R19! Prance! Prance! Prance!

by Anonymousreply 21December 5, 2021 8:33 AM

R20 Yes, because it screams, "I was a yuppie now I'm a muppie and scared of getting old." So just do some "running" instead but don't talk about it.

by Anonymousreply 22December 5, 2021 6:49 PM

In my area, they cycle.

by Anonymousreply 23December 7, 2021 10:33 AM

R14 swimming might suit you has the same mental benefits of being able to "check out" mentally, plus its unlikely small animals will cross your path, at least in the pool. Plus its way easier on your joints

by Anonymousreply 24December 7, 2021 1:09 PM

You get a really good workout for a comparatively small investment of time.

by Anonymousreply 25December 7, 2021 1:38 PM

Swimming, while excellent exercise, requires a pool, which likely requires a gym, which likely requires all the nonsense that goes with a gym membership and well, the gym members themselves, the stench of the whole experience, and the time it takes to get to the gym....

by Anonymousreply 26December 7, 2021 6:54 PM

Running gives you a high.strange but true

by Anonymousreply 27December 7, 2021 7:08 PM

I don't understand jogging/running. Checking out mentally is not wise and it's hell on your body. I can see a brisk walk but running ruins your joints and, ladies, even with a good sports bra, those tits will be hanging loose before their time. Hell, I've seen male joggers with saggy tits. I do not wear ear buds or listen to music when I walk either as being oblivious is dangerous. If, a car or bike is barreling up behind me I want to hear plus listen to birds is pleasant.
