Lady Gaga wins Best Actress at The New York Film Critics Circle
Haters be damned: Some critics believe Lady Gaga’s performance in “House of Gucci” is award-worthy.
Despite mixed reviews of her performance, the star of Ridley Scott’s new drama has scored her first award for her take on Patrizia Reggiani, who famously hired a hitman to murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995.
The New York Film Critics Circle announced that it had named Gaga “Best Actress” on Friday alongside its other award winners. Gaga’s win was the only one the flick got from the group, which bills itself as “a principled alternative to Oscar.” In fact, the organization has picked the same best film as the Academy Awards 30 times over its 86 years, the Wrap reported.
“BEST ACTRESS: Lady Gaga for ‘House of Gucci’ #NYFCC,” the p. r. firm Falco Ink tweeted in response.

The film got decidedly mixed reviews and as a whole the film won't be taken seriously by the Academy. but a number of the reviews noted Gaga's film presence and despite some carps about her Italian accent she remained pretty much unscathed.

Yes, R6, because ALL critics who work in NYC were born and raised there and not, say, from ANYWHERE else and then moved their for the job. And they have to then choose native NYC performers ONLY for their awards.
Makes perfect sense.
Or, you know, enough critics simply thought her performance was the standout of the year.

R6 it is somewhat of a surprise after all the NYFCC is the oldest and most prestigious critics group. It was founded 66 years ago. I don't give a flying fuck if her accent drifted: she punched off the screen. I would have given her an award simply for the two indelible hand gestures she delivered in the trailer. In a time of wishy washy, calculated, actory performances (looking at you Kidman), she was fully ALIVE on the screen. She seized her part by the throat and shook it.

NYFCC Best Actress winners rarely ever go on to win the Oscar. Over the last decade+ only two have, Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine” and Meryl for “The Iron Lady”.
They do mostly go on to be nominated, however. The only one over the past decade to win this award and not be nominated for the Oscar in the Best Actress category was Rachel Weisz in 2012.

The Best Actress category for the Oscars is exciting a lot of critics and “award watchers” who predict etc. because there is no clear winner this year. I was reading Gold Derby, an awards site, and they mentioned how last year was super predictable, and four out of five of their predicted nominees going back to last December were nominated, with the winner being who they predicted. That’s how predictable it was.
This year is nothing like that, and there is no clear view of who the five actresses who will get nominated are, although they believe Stewart and Kidman are definitely making it in, however things may change because Stewart’s film wasn’t well received by many and she’s been losing steam, while other actresses like Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Tessa Thompson (Passing) are gaining steam.
Jessica Chastain also has lost a lot of steam but they’re hoping she gets in.
They feel GaGa may be left out of the Final 5 if Rachel Zegler etc. performance and movie take off, but then there is also the Academy maybe not wanting to nominate a young new actress like Zegler yet and giving the nomination to someone we all know, like GaGa or Chastain or Berry.

R83 do you know how it works? They always declare actresses a lock early and it changes as more movies come out and we see who critics start to favor etc.
Stewart is still in the race and receiving critic nominations but losing steam. GaGa is losing steam as her movie didn’t go over that well with critics or viewers, same as Stewart. You can keep screaming GaGa was remarkable and is carrying the movie, but it isn’t true. The movie isn’t performing well and her performance was not universally praised like you keep claiming.

Ok, here's how I believe the voting occurs at the NYFCC:
each member votes their top choice; if no contender gets more than 50% (?), they keep voting until they get a majority; as a result, alliances shift, often to vote AGAINST someone who may be in the lead; so, theoretically, on the first ballot, Stewart was in the lead, but not a majority, with Gaga in second place; on the next ballot, the anti-Stewart contingent throws their votes to Gaga to prevent Stewart from winning, and Gaga takes the majority and wins.

[quote]Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci solidified its solid place in the year-end holiday box office and awards lineup with $6.8 million from 3,477 cinemas in its second weekend for a domestic tally of $33.6 million for MGM and United Artists Releasing. The adult drama stars Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Al Pacino.

Do you guys understand how films make money these days?
First, you can't go off pre-pandemic BO numbers at all. Everything's changed.
Second, House of Gucci has an exclusive with Epix for a post theater run and then will be on Paramount Plus. Both of which paid very well for the property (don't know the specifics, but I know it's a lot).
World wide, the film will break about even (including marketing). Then turn a nice profit from streaming.
Compare that to King Richard, The Last Duel and a slew of other adult dramas? House of Gucci is 100 percent a hit. Three years ago? It would be considered just okay. But, of course, three years ago, the BO would most likely be double what it is right now, all other things being equal.
Sheesh. Is the strange anti Gaga stuff just Janbot in disguise?

No other critics group has given her best actress.

I know, r139! I should think three is the minimum!

R142 only the NY one isn’t the only one that matters. There is barely hype around that one anymore.

She is buying these r145. No way Palm Springs, who is very picky with who they award, is giving her the Icon award after two movies without being bought or promised something.

R147 only that’s not true at all. Many don’t. They campaign but they don’t buy them.

If it’s so prestigious, why did it award Cameron Diaz and Lady GooGoo?

I love seeing Vadgestan having a meltdown in this thread.
While Gaga is racking up awards and starring in major films, Madonna is too busy taking pictures of herself on the floor and searching for her Life Alert.

R151 it isn’t. They’re in denial

The NYFCC is prestigious in that it has traditionally been seen as an early bellwether for what movies and performances are in the mix for Oscar nominations. True, they have diverged a bit more than usual in the past decade, but it's still up there in noting who is a serious contender. I don't think anybody thought Cameron Diaz would get an Oscar nomination after her 1998 NYFCC win, but Gaga in House of Gucci is different -- she already has an Oscar nomination for her acting (where Diaz didn't) and the film is Oscar bait (There's Something About Mary was a summer gross-out comedy).

I can't wait to see what the strange anti Gaga fans say when she racks up some new award, assuming that happens.
At some point guys? You just have to admit that someone who don't like has succeeded, even if you don't get it or understand why or how she's succeeded.
I can stand Mariah Carey. But she's one of the biggest pop stars of all time. Me not liking her doesn't shield me from that truth.
See? No one got hurt. My heart still beats. Life goes on.
Gaga is a movie star. She's been awarded some pretty big awards as an actress with just two films under her belt.
Big deal. It doesn't take away from whoever your favorite is. It's just the way it is.

ONLY Lady Gaga DESERVES the Best Actress Academy Award this year because not only is it a sublime performance by a young starlet, this ravishing renaissance woman and avant-garde artist did it all through immense pain and suffering, due to her debilitating fibromyalgia. What's more, the Morgellon fibers released 24/7 into her mouth and respiratory tract required stunning grit and courage to overcome in order to master the Italian accent. Brava e bellissima!
