Given that it’s going straight to HBO Max, they got a huge upfront payday. Also means they’re going to shaft everyone in the original cast so they don’t have to share it.

Guarantee no one from the previous movies will have anything more than a cameo
Doing it for HBO Max, CT & SS are probably getting $20 million plus upfront. The old cast were paid thru deferred compensation from the theatrical release of the two previous movies, and forfeiting that for HBO Max, they would have to pay them a lot of money upfront to return. Much easier to cast the movie with young unknown hardbodies who work for peanuts instead of shelling out big bucks for an over 40 stripper.
I bet the plot will have Magic Mike assembling a new troupe to perform in Las Vegas, so they can crosspromote the stupid live show.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 29, 2021 5:04 PM |
I agree with the previous poster. This will totally end up being "Magic Mike: The Next Generation." It sounds like Magic Mike/Channing's Character is going to retire.
As for the others, a lot of them are in their mid-40s. They're not getting Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer or Donald Glover for peanuts.
If any of the people from the other casts come back it will be for a cameo to update the audience on what happened to them and I could see them just mentioning them verbally to save even more money.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 29, 2021 5:14 PM |
The saga of making male stripper movies that have to be self serious instead of sexy and fun continues.

Cute but boring. Corenswet has an HBO mini-series coming out next year. COVID derailed a lot of people making things that should have gone into production earlier go into production later.
He isn't, however, a CW star. It's funny that person named him but couldn't name an actual CW star. KJ Apa would totally do this but demand to be the lead.
He'd need a Peyton Alex Smith, Michael Vlamis or Alex Saxon. Yes, they're on the CW and yes, I had to look those names up.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 30, 2021 3:33 PM |
Murphy gave him a starring turn in Hollywood and honestly David Corenswet didn't do that great with the opportunity r38. It was other people around him in the cast that got praise.

If I were Channing I would devote myself to ensembles with good directors and varied casts. He is very well-liked among his peers and has a good-guy reputation in Hollywood. If "Marky Mark" -- who is NOT liked by his peers -- can get an Oscar nomination then Channing can certainly WIN an Oscar. It's in his future.

I find David Corenswet and Finn Wittrock both to be extremely handsome and solid, though not spectacular, actors.
Neither seems to be able to break out.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 30, 2021 4:19 PM |
They should just make the cast full of actors whom Melissa Benoit fucked, since she loves hardbodies.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 30, 2021 4:23 PM |
The whole concept of Magic Mike is outdated at this point...a former stripper living in Florida would be recruiting younger guys for his gay porn studio, not to strip at a club. If Matt Bomer is involved, he could play a Sean Cody type living large on the west coast, who reaches out to Mike to work for him as a recruiter.
By the way, I had no idea the first 2 made so much money! The 1st one made 23 times its original budget...the 2nd one made 8 times its original budget. No wonder the cash cow continues to be milked.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 30, 2021 5:17 PM |
People on DL wrote it was a dud merely because they didn't like it. A lot of know-it-alls on DL discuss show biz with very little understanding how things work on a fundamental level (eg, that profitability is in relation to costs, or that the global marketplace is larger/more important than domestic).
I won't claim that MM XL was a good film, but it had entertaining moments. It was targeted to women, and that's who went to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 30, 2021 5:18 PM |
R54, compared to the first one it was a dud. Financially is another story but it wasn't a huge as the first. They really decided to get more serious instead of having more fun. There was less everything that made the first one fun because they thought people wanted things to be more serious. They were wrong. It needs to know what it is: a film about strippers.
[quote]It was targeted to women, and that's who went to see it.
The movies were targeted to women.
The promotion, as usual, was targeted towards gay men and women.
That's also partially why people though it was a dud here because when you saw the film after they got you in the seats you realized, it's not for you.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 30, 2021 5:23 PM |
If Magic Mike is recruiting guys for a live Vegas stage show then the concept can’t be outdated because it actually exists.

KJ Apa did The Hate U Give, Dead Reckoning and shared his naked ass with the world in the Michael Bay produced Songbird.

The strangest thing about Bomer’s scene in MMXXL is that he is wearing a lavalier microphone and transmitter on his belt which is presumably why he did not remove his pants all the way, but someone who was an extra in the scene with him said he was not even singing live, he was lip syncing.
It was a very poorly staged striptease but I have the feeling Bomer thought he was too good for the material and didn’t want to do much.

The nudity level aside, Bomer who got second billing, could have presumably gone through the script and been like, “I need something memorable or funny to do” before signing on. $20 mil paydays are tough to come by for any human being. This one happens to serve a double purpose, which is to continue to float the Magic Mike brand.
For those who don't know, Magic Mike was financed by Soderbergh and Tatum. It only cost $4 mil (which is artificially low, if a studio had financed it, the same schedule, actors, and crew would have cost $20-30 mil). Now Magic Mike is the new Chippendales--they have worldwide stage shows featuring male strippers. So all the franchise/merchandizing money goes to Soderbergh and Tatum.
In the next two decades, they stand to earn more off Magic Mike stripper shows than off their careers, and they're two very well employed guys. Soderbergh can use his tens of millions to finance his own movies and then sell them for distribution. Tatum can live like a billionaire. It's a smart move.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | December 8, 2021 4:43 PM |

R121 Live like a billionaire might be pushing it but the economics of vegas shows are nutty and disgustingly profitable for talent OR owners of the show. Plus its an easily franchisable touring show. There can be only one stage show of say, Hello Dolly touring North America at a time. Magic Mike could have 5 touring companies all doing the same show and while ticket prices would be lower, the costs are probably 10% of what it costs to tour a broadway type musical. You just need a stage, lighting, and oiled up interchangable men. The ability to sell out these shows is also cheaper with internet/facebook ads than before where prohibitively expensive TV time and newspaper ads drove ticket sales. And they're doing this all over the world. Merchandizing is also easier with the internet. Before you had to sell to stores at wholesale, now its direct shipping. no idea why anyone would want a magic mike mug or t-shirt but they sell a lot of them

Show some twigs and berries or this movie is pointless.

Only DL would think that Steven Soderbergh is gay.
In addition to cheating on Jules Asner with women, he also cheated on his first wife Betsy Brantley with women. IIRC, he left Brantley for another woman.

I would rather guess that Sonderbergh is pandering to the Gays, just like most Liberal minded celebrities.

Don't forget calendars. This kind of merch sells like hot cakes.

Magic Mike 13: Friday the 13th
Mike and an enthusiastic crew of male strippers go on a weekend retreat to Camp Crystal Lake only to be stalked by a crazed killer.

ROFL No one buys paper calendars anymore, what is this, 1992?
by Anonymous | reply 129 | December 9, 2021 11:51 AM |
There actually was an official Magic Mike XXL calendar. It was boring like the film.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 9, 2021 12:02 PM |
r129, you do realize who is the demographic for this kind of things, right? You know, Fraus who buy all sorts of calendars, like the ones with cat pictures.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 9, 2021 12:03 PM |
Sexy men calendars had two demographics: college girls in dorms and gay men. Older frau women buy cat calendars.
Twenty years ago you could probably find around twenty different sexy male calendars at a gay bookstore; now they probably have three or four at most. Paper calendars simply aren’t a big thing anymore.

R128 in a feat of casting beneficence, when the killer is unmasked he is revealed to be played by Alex Pettyfer.

You do realize that most gay bookstores are gone and people buy this kind of stuff at Amazon, right?
by Anonymous | reply 134 | December 9, 2021 12:13 PM |
Stop trying to prove paper calendars are still a thing, r134. They’re not a thing anymore. Do they even have the seasonal kiosk at the mall anymore? Does anyone go to the mall even?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | December 9, 2021 12:21 PM |
r135, they are still a thing when Amazon sells them. If not even Amazon was selling them, you would have a point, but that isn't the case.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | December 9, 2021 12:24 PM |
The Chippendales calendars were actually a huge moneymaker, they talk about how big they were in the recent DiscoveryPlus docu on the Chippendales. They would fly to Tahiti and do the photoshoots there, and there would be an accompanying videocassette which you can probably find on Youtube. Again, a different world back then.

R128 The skinny dipping scene alone would be worth it.

R128 That's not a half bad idea: male strippers meet slasher movie! Obviously, the appeal would be they get slashed in their underwear.

I would pitch a series about a troupe of male strippers who solve mysteries in each new town they visit. It would be like Scooby Doo with sweaty chests.

TRAGIC MIKE: A NEW BEGINNING

Now that would be quite the spin-off. Scrappy Doo and the Magic Mikes. Solving one mystery per strip show event.

r131 is correct. i saw Magic Mike in an opening weekend screening with a gay friend. Los angeles suburb. Theater was filled with groups of housewives.

1) remember when male strippers HAD to be drop dead gorgeous in the face and a body?
2) off topic, but I find it interesting looking at the chippendales from 1980s to 1990's and which ones have gone to seed/gone to pot and which ones still look good in face and body?... yes, i know some of them are now in their 50's and beyond, but still some of them look really worse for wear, in fact, MOST of them. You would think that they would try to hold on as best and as long as they could?
by Anonymous | reply 154 | February 2, 2022 7:18 PM |
Paid to be filmed dancing with the strippers for Sahara's Magic Mike cable promo show.
Multi-racial cast, all gay, and unbelievably talented ie gymnastics as well as singing and piano/insturment playing.
Talked to another young woman whose brother was a performer. He'd been a back up dancer and singer touring internationally. Just wow.

Reid Carolin is a classic Hollywood enabler, not quite the Gary Morton to Channing’s Lucy, but in the vicinity. He is very good looking.
He’s married to Cody Horn now.
