He'll play. He's tied with Rafa and Fed at 20 Slams and the Aussie is his pet slam.
No way in hell he doesn't play.

Yeah, I agree with R1. He has won the Aussie Slam 9x, including the last three.
No way he doesn't disclose that he's vaccinated.
But, I'm all for him playing only to lose in the end.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 29, 2021 10:20 AM |
This is kind of delicious (and I have considered myself a Djokovic fan until recently).
He has a really good chance to move ahead of Nadal and Federer in GS wins in Australia. But his commitment to anti-vax stupidity may scuttle that. Not a great legacy if he makes that choice.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 4, 2022 7:25 PM |
While I think it's absurd, tennis is probably the only sport where not getting vaccinated wouldn't have a big impact.
There are no teammates, the opponent is across a net, and he's never near refs.
While he might come into contact with folks entering or existing, that's going to be minimal.
If you're a world class athlete at that level, I can almost (not quite, but almost) understand not wanting to inject yourself. Given the competitive calendar, missing a week of practice due to vaccine side effects could be a huge problem. You don't have a team to compensate if you're slightly off your game.
If I thought that it was a rationally taken position, I could see his logic. However, he's clearly just an anti-vaxxer nutbag, rather than someone who has thought it through and weighed legitimate concerns.

Maybe the Victorian Government has learned from another great state in the US that vaccines are not the one-size-fits-all solution to end the pandemic and the rates of infection are not an indicator of the situation.
New York state shattered its record for new Covid-19 infections, reporting 85,476 cases on Saturday as the omicron variant continues its lightning spread.
Hospitalizations also continued to surge on Saturday, up 532 patients to 8,451. The percentage of positive tests declined slightly, to 22.24%. Another 88 people died.

^no reason for exemption given
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 4, 2022 10:07 PM |
WHY IS DJOKOVIC EXEMPT?
Australia's Department of Health says medical exemptions are handed out if the individual has an 'acute major medical condition'.
Under the guidelines, these conditions could include:
- Inflammatory cardiac illness in the last three months
- Undergoing major surgery or hospital admission for a serious illness
- A Covid-19 diagnosis that means vaccination cannot be made for six months
- Any serious effect to a Covid-19 vaccine in the past (Note: Djokovic has not confirmed whether or not he has been jabbed)
- If the vaccine is a risk to themselves or others during the vaccination process
- Underlying developmental or mental health disorders
Victoria's Deputy Premier James Merlino said last month that medical exemptions are 'not a loophole'.
'Medical exemptions are just that,' he said. 'It's not a loophole for privileged tennis players.
'They are medical exemptions in exceptional circumstances - if you have acute medical conditions.'

It’s quite obvious that he has refused vaccination as his father has made obvious with his statements. Novak is a narcissist and not real smart. For shame. I hope the pressure from his peers ducks up his his head. He deserves it.
One of my favorite tennis moments years ago was a match between Novak and Fed. Novak’s father was screaming and carrying on in the players box and Fed walked over and told him to shut up. Loved it.

“Novak is currently in a room which no one can enter,” Srdjan Djokovic, told the B92 internet portal. “In front of the room are two policemen.”
As a progressive liberal, I respect him even more for standing up for the rights of his own body, "My body, my choice."
Yyyyyyeeeeeaaaahhhhh. Funny you didn't bring up the paragraph right after this in Wikipedia:
According to Suzannah Weiss, the slogan, "My body, my choice" is a feminist idea which can be applicable to women's reproductive rights and other women's rights issues.[9] It is also the opposite to treating women's bodies like property, and asserts the importance of a culture of consent.[9] Rameeza Ahmad describes how the Pakistani version of "my body, my choice," "Mera Jism Meri Marzi," is important to feminists because it is important for women to know they have control over their own bodies.[10] Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner writes that while it seems simple that women's freedom is linked to women's own control and decisions about their own bodies, in practice the slogan of 'My body, my choice' is too often changed to mean of "not really your body, not really your choice." and women's rights like access to birth control, abortion, and reproductive health are attacked.[11]
"My body my choice" has a long tradition in feminism; its relevance to the rights of macho Serbian assholes to infect his fans with COVID, not so much. Which makes your claims about bodily autonomy the same brand of horseshit as your claims to being a progressive.

The ABF can confirm that Mr Djokovic failed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia, and his visa has been subsequently cancelled.
Non-citizens who do not hold a valid visa on entry or who have had their visa cancelled will be detained and removed from Australia. The ABF can confirm Mr Djokovic had access to his phone.

by Anonymous | reply 135 | January 5, 2022 10:50 PM |
No, R133 - Tennis Australia approved his exemption to play. Tennis Australia does not control Australia’s borders - those are the responsibility of the Australian border force which is part of a the Federal Department of Home Affairs. He was then allowed to apply for the correct visa to travel, which he didn’t, and was justifiably stopped at the border on arrival.
It’s really not that complicated - his team fucked up. As did he in refusing to be vaccinated. His choice and now he is experiencing the consequences.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | January 5, 2022 10:52 PM |
IF he doesn't play, that is a missed opportunity for the Slam record, as other have pointed out. But a healthy Djokovic should be a factor at all of the Slams for at least the next two years (though when and how swiftly decline comes is impossible to pinpoint). Fed is done winning slams. If Rafa can get relatively healthy he has a chance at the French for a couple of years, or maybe a hardcourt Slam with a busted draw. But his clock is really ticking and he's been injured.

"No, [R133] - Tennis Australia approved his exemption to play. Tennis Australia does not control Australia’s borders - those are the responsibility of the Australian border force which is part of a the Federal Department of Home Affairs."
Good point. The exemption was by tournament organizers to play the tournament, not be in the country. That's different criteria applied by a different entity. You can argue that Tennis Australia and the government should have coordinated better, but you can also argue Djokovic and his team should have been aware of this and did what needed to be done - proper visa and/or vaccination.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | January 5, 2022 11:00 PM |
R139 It’s not an administrative issue, it’s a public health issue. Why one rule for him and one for everybody else?
If there’s hysteria in the media then so be it - people in Melbourne have been locked down for all but a couple of months during the pandemic. Largely isolating, vaccinating, getting boosters, wearing masks, home schooling their kids, losing their jobs if they can’t work from home and now facing more of the same if Omicron continues to decimate the health service and the supply chain.
Some rich tennis player doesn’t get to break the rules? Oh boo fucking hoo!

His father claiming he was being "held prisoner" and challenging the airport officials to a fight was hilarious. Serbia seems like the Florida Walmart patrons of Europe.
And then Serbia itself BEING OUTRAGED! International incident! Grrr!
Would Australia notice or care if Serbia was mad at them? I'm guessing not.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 6, 2022 4:23 AM |
My understanding is that he claimed he had an exemption and then didn't bring the proper proof with him. Not just bureaucratic wrong visa claims.
Since the only real exemption he could get would be if he had covid in the last six months, I'm guessing he got it a second time, is unvaxxed given his previous statements and his refusal to say so, and didn't have proper proof with him. So back to Serbia he goes.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | January 6, 2022 4:27 AM |
I may have this wrong but my understanding is that the 'Covid within the last six months' was a Tennis Australia thing that only applied to being allowed to compete but is not recognised by the government as being valid grounds to enter without being vaccinated. Then again, the quote below from the Guardian may mean that I am misunderstanding the issue. Six pm is an hour and a half away here so I guess that's when the deciding set will be played.
So the matter has been adjourned until 6pm, wherein we will continue our coverage of Djokovic’s attempts to have his deportation reversed.
An interesting tidbit at the end was a discussion on the scope of the hearing, with parties agreeing that a visa was actually issued, and that the matter at hand was the cancellation of the visa, not the requirements of the visa itself.
It’s a small difference that I’m sure will matter once the hearing begins properly.

by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 6, 2022 4:45 AM |
My [italic] guess [/italic] is that he had a doctor’s letter attesting to having had another bout of covid within the past six months, as R155 suggested. That earned him the Tennis Australian exemption.
I also suspect that he shopped for that letter in the same way Trump shopped for his “could live 200 healthy years” letter. (It’s not like he doesn’t have the money.)
During the several hours he was in limbo, Australian authorities possibly contacted the doctor and began asking very pointed questions. (May even have sought to get answers under oath.)
Something didn’t (or wouldn’t) add up.

Nadal says Djokovic knew the risks in Australia: ‘If you are vaccinated, you can play’
by Anonymous | reply 178 | January 6, 2022 3:15 PM |
R178 I've always liked Nadal. He is smart. He is also Spanish. Spain is one of the most gay friendly countries in Europe, unlike Serbia, which is the opposite. Serbia is full of neo nezi homophobies. Here's a look at "gay friendly" Serbia as the posters above claim.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 6, 2022 3:22 PM |
More proof of "gay friendly" Serbia:
Gays and lesbians continue to face discrimination and harassment in Serbia. The majority of Serbian people retain strong attitudes against homosexuality. There have been numerous instances of violent gay-bashing, the most extreme during the first Belgrade Gay Pride in 2001.
Several pride events have had to be cancelled. Pride Day celebrations in Belgrade in 2004, and another in Novi Sad in 2007, were cancelled because of the inability to provide adequate safety against violence due to resource constraints. The 2009 Belgrade Pride was also cancelled for similar reasons, as police could not guarantee the safety of the participants.[45] The Second Belgrade Pride parade went ahead on 10 October 2010, with the participation of around a thousand people. However, it was met with violent reaction culminating in the Belgrade anti-gay riot attended by 6,000 anti-gay protesters and extreme nationalist group members.
Official medical textbooks that classify homosexuality under "sexual deviations and disorders" were in circulation and widely used. After several requests to do so, the Serbian Medical Society finally stated that same-sex orientation is not a disease in an official letter to Labris, a Serbian LGBT organization, in 2008. Homosexuality has been removed from the official list of diseases since 1997, when Serbia started applying ICD-10.[46][47]
The protection of LGBT people in Serbia is further complicated by the existence of various nationalist and neo-Nazi associations like "Obraz", "1389" and "Stormfront", which are supported by some right-wing political parties. These groups have, on several occasions, made their threats to LGBT people publicly known though the media, and the police are increasingly reacting to deter such threats publicly.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | January 6, 2022 3:27 PM |
Meanwhile in Spain:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Spain have undergone several significant changes over the last decades to become some of the most advanced in the world. As of the 2020s, Spain is considered one of the most culturally liberal and LGBT-friendly countries in the world.

by Anonymous | reply 183 | January 6, 2022 3:35 PM |
R180 who ever said that Serbia is gay friendly, you fool? I only mentioned that Novak is not a homophobe and that their PM is openly gay woman. Of course that Serbia is homophobic, as is rest of Balkans. African American community is known to be rather homophobic, yet you don't blame Black athletes for it, I hope.
But, why do you think that both Novak and Nadal must be on main course with the majority in their country. A Spanish person can be very homophobic (as fervent Catholics surely are) and a Serbian liberal and gay friendly.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | January 6, 2022 3:36 PM |
R183 Yes one comment totally in context with the conversation where someone posted a bunch of articles with "LGBTQ" in the headlines in relation to Serbia and conflating that with "gay rights" confusingly, suddenly turns it into an "anti-trans" thread.
You are obsessed and should seek help. Legitimate criticism isn't "anti-trans". You know what is synonymous with trans activism though? Shutting down debate by claiming transphobia and attacking whenever anything critical of trans activism is mentioned.

R192 I think you'd be surprised how few posters here claim to be "woke". There's a handful of them that bully the rest of us disproportionately, so accusing the DL in general of "American wokeism" is actually more of a stereotype that you are projecting on us, presumably because we are American.
Like, I agree that the blanket anti-Serb comments are not helpful (despite my own interactions with Serbians has been that the ones I encountered were psychotic), but you can't really rail against Americans and wokeism to make your argument that "blanket condemnation over a people is bad" when you're doing the exact same thing

Djokovic's "wisdom" according to the nutty Eastern European poster:
"In May 2020, the Serbian world tennis No 1 – who is in Melbourne awaiting a decision on whether he will be deported – claimed, during an Instagram live interview with self-styled wellness guru Chervin Jafarieh, that people could change the composition of food and water through positive thinking.
“I know some people that through that energetical transformation, through the power of prayer, though the power of gratitude, they managed to turn the most toxic food or maybe most polluted water into the most healing water, because water reacts … molecules in the water react to our emotions, to what is being said,” the 34-year-old, explained.
At the time, Jafarieh was selling $50 bottles of Advanced Brain Nutrients.
US player-turned-commentator Mary Carillo criticised Djokovic’s comments in the clip as “dangerous” and “disturbing".
by Anonymous | reply 207 | January 6, 2022 5:24 PM |
More:
"Djokovic – who says he has a Covid-19 vaccine medical exemption – had previously written in his autobiography Serve To Win about watching a test in which a researcher directed loving energy towards one glass of water and swore aggressively at the other. “After a few days… [the belittled glass] was tinted slightly green… the other glass was still bright and crystal clear”.
The player attributes much of his on-court success to giving up gluten after a Serbian nutritionist Dr Igor Cetojevic held a piece of white bread against his stomach as a test in 2010. “I was noticeably weaker,” Djokovic wrote in his autobiography, adding that “kinesiological arm testing [has] long been used as a diagnostic tool by natural healers.”
He also repeated debunked claims from Chinese traditional medicine. “Each organ in our bodies is undergoing repair in roughly this order: Lungs 3-5am, Large Intestine 5-7am, Stomach 7-9am…”
In 2018, he told Shortlist magazine that he believed in telekinesis and telepathy. “You have this thing called telepathy, right?” he said. “Or this thing called telekinesis, or instinct, intuition. I feel like [these] are the gifts from this higher order, the source, the god, whatever, that allows us to understand the higher power and higher order in ourselves.”
In an interview with podcaster Jay Shetty, Djokovic described the importance of spiritual teachers and Reiki healers in his life, saying that they had helped him and his wife to “open our minds, even more, to understand how we can have internal conversations with ourselves”.

I love this in R240's linked article:
Djokovic has convinced himself that he is an object of adoration; he “throws his heart” to crowds at the end of his matches even as they are booing him. Something in his brain converts the sound of derision into cheering. Anywhere other than a sporting arena, this kind of solipsistic superpower would require a diagnosis and treatment.

And it underlines how much Djokovic fucked up by smugly announcing to the world that he had an exemption.

"Justin Quill, a partner with Thomson Geer who specialises in media law, said Djokovic might be able to play the Australian Open even while his challenge to the deportation decision proceeds.
He said if Djokovic's interim injunction was successful, the hearing into the matter proper was likely to be listed for a date falling well after the completion of the tournament on Jan. 30.
"When you look at interlocutory injunctions, you have to clear two things," Quill told Reuters.
"You have to demonstrate there is an arguable case with reasonable grounds. If Djokovic gets over that first hurdle, the next thing is Balance of Convenience.
"This is where you balance the scales in regards to the imposition on each party and who will be hindered more if their rights are wrongly denied."
Quill said he believed the Balance of Convenience could favour Djokovic meaning he can play at the Australian Open."

Worth watching - the French government has yet to decide whether visiting sportspeople have to be vaccinated as well as French sportspeople, potentially ruling Djokovic out of the French Open.
The good news for him is that he'll almost certainly be able to play Wimbledon and the US Open.

R324 It isn't a visa issue. It's the fact that Australian border rules say that you have to be vaccinated unless you qualify for a medical exemption (contracting coronavirus in the last 6 months doesn't qualify). Djokovic and Tennis Australia thought that they could chance it with their own 'rules' but it doesn't work that way.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | January 8, 2022 11:58 AM |
"@paulsakkal

by Anonymous | reply 329 | January 8, 2022 12:07 PM |
The exemption rules, ie contracting it in the last 6 months etc are for returning residents or permanent visa holders only.
They do not apply to non residents. Non residents must be doubly vaccinated with an approved vaccine. Some Russian players couldn't come because they received the sputnik vaccine which is not approved in Oz.
Novaxx doesn't meet any of the requirements.
The puzzling thing is why some organisations approved his entry when the law says otherwise.

r326 The vaccination protects you much more from becoming seriously ill than from getting infected. And masks and lockdowns and finding medicine against serious illness and similar are much more social, trustworthy and better to try to deal with the virus than vaccines. The constant witchhunt, war and incarceration of unvaccinated in most of the modern world is extremely despicable, very criminal et al and doesn't help the trust in big pharma, other things and the vaccines at all.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | January 8, 2022 1:12 PM |
R333 Prevention of serious illness means fewer hospital beds, doctors and other medical resources are used up. That's no trivial thing. The fact that wards are full of unvaxxed people who are seriously ill with covid has affected other people with serious health conditions.
