Best Black Sitcom of the '90s

The Black-led sitcom really came of age in the '90s. Which is your fave?

I love Family Matters. I wished I had a nice close family like that when I was growing up.

Living Single had potential to be as big as Friends, but WB didn't promote it as strongly.

by Anonymousreply 2November 29, 2021 2:15 AM

If you go back and try to rewatch them free from nostalgia, Living Single was the best.

Jamie Foxx y;all

Living Single and Martin

The Parkers had the worst title. They couldn’t come up with anything catchy for Mo’Nique?

Friends was a white copy of Living Single.

Living Single became so successful that after a year, NBC used the same formula of 'sitcom featuring friends in New York City' and aired Friends in 1994.

Right, something on the WB would be as big as NBC’s Must See TV lineup. 🙄

Junior High me loved Martin. It was my water cooler show with my friends. I also remember liking Living Single.

None of the others register at all.

by Anonymousreply 9May 30, 2022 8:48 AM

They all sucked. Sitcoms that is. Notice very few survived into 2022?

by Anonymousreply 10May 30, 2022 8:54 AM

In the UK it was Desmond’s, a sitcom based in a barber’s shop in Peckham, starring Norman Beaton and Carmen Munro. They were early trailblazers for Black British actors.

As a kid in the 1990s, everyone watched one or two of these shows. It was no big deal.

Now people would be screeching WOKE and POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD!

I liked the negro shows where they played domestic help, buffoons, or the slut of white men. It was so true to life. Now, it’s all these make believe shows about how the negros can vote, pay their bills, become President, ect. It’s all science friction now.

by Anonymousreply 13May 30, 2022 9:11 AM

Living Single was on Fox, not WB.

by Anonymousreply 14May 31, 2022 10:43 PM

I loved The Wayan Bros and Malcolm & Eddie too. Moesha didn't age well in ways, Moesha was so smug and bratty and not a good friend.

by Anonymousreply 15May 31, 2022 10:52 PM

I liked The Parkers mainly because once upon a time I thought Mo’Nique was genuinely funny and had a lot of promise

by Anonymousreply 16May 31, 2022 10:54 PM

Everybody Loves Rachel (Dolezal)

by Anonymousreply 17May 31, 2022 10:57 PM

The Parkers was more funny than Moesha mainly due to lacking all the corny PSAs and self-righteousness that plagued a lot of 90s teen shows. The Parkers knew what it was and ran with it. Kim was always more funny than Moesha.

Living single was so much better than Friends. I think that a show like it would do really well today. Someone call Netflix and set this up.

by Anonymousreply 19May 31, 2022 11:00 PM

Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv were my ideal make believe parents.

by Anonymousreply 20May 31, 2022 11:04 PM

The Simpsons: OJ and Nicole

by Anonymousreply 21May 31, 2022 11:08 PM

Fox, The WB and UPN basically were the homes of most Black sitcoms for a while which narrowed their audience (all these were minor networks). If Living Single was on NBC or CBS maybe things would have played differently.

by Anonymousreply 22May 31, 2022 11:09 PM

I vote The Wayans Brothers with Pops (John Witherspoon) and Dee (Anna Maria Horsford).

by Anonymousreply 23May 31, 2022 11:12 PM

How the hell was Living Single a "copy" of Friends? They were all young people embodied comedic archetypes living together in a city? If you want to make these reaches, you can argue both of them ripped off Seinfeld.

I've read that the FILM Singles (Cameron Crowe) was the basis of Friends, they just tweaked the location and some of the characters.

As an adult I now realize that Kyle paid most of the bills in that huge ass apartment and Overton was Kyle's live in trade 🙃

The Parkers is more of a 2000s sitcom...

by Anonymousreply 28June 1, 2022 12:01 AM

There are a lot of good choices, but I'm going with Martin just for this scene.
