Angela Merkel will have the military band play Nina Hagen during her farewell ceremony

German Chancellors (and other high-ranking state officials) leaving office are traditionally saluted with a military band performace in a farewell ceremony called "Großer Zapfenstreich" , and are allowed to pick 3 songs for the band to play.

Angela Merkel's first choice will be a Nina Hagen song, "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen". Her second choice is "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen" by singer-actress-diva Hildegard Knef, then the hymn "Großer Gott wir loben dich" will finish things on a more conservative note.

An AIDS/COVID denier as the soundtrack. Great choice, Angela... Du hast mich echt enttäuscht! What about that other covidiot, Nena?

It was not Nena. She selected a song from Nina Hagen, mother of Cosma Shiva Hagen. Her mother was in a relationship wirh Wolf Bierman who was expatriate from the DDR, GDR in 1974.

The song was known as the Youngs hymn against the GDR. Little do they about Germany on DL. Just the old stereotypes.

And yes, Hildegard Knef is adorable.

Seems very calculated.

Aw, bye bye Angela! She looked like she was about to cry at the farewell ceremony. Olaf Scholz will take over. Not sure this is going to be such a good time for Germany.

As a former Stasi officer Angela should have gone more classical

Why is it "calculated", r10? In what the fuck way is the outgoing Chancellor of Germany for 16 years being "calculated" in her choice of songs to be performed by the military band as one small aspect of her farewell ceremony? She's been one of the most powerful and important politicians in the world for 16 years, often acting as a voice of conscience at the toughest of times. What is "calculated" about her choosing a song by another East German woman of around the same age as her?

by Anonymousreply 13December 2, 2021 10:15 PM

R12 = right-wing Polish nationalist.

by Anonymousreply 14December 2, 2021 10:16 PM

Angeka said she chose this song because it reminds her of her youth and because it's by an ex East German citizen like herself and their childhood.

by Anonymousreply 15December 3, 2021 4:35 AM

R9 is right.

[quote]often acting as a voice of conscience at the toughest of times.

Mutti will be remembered less as a "voice of conscience" than yet another German leader who wreaked havoc on Europe with her woefully misguided public declarations.

I think this should have been included:

r18. Her political party, the CDU used that song during her campaign in 2005 at conventions. The Stones were not amused and let them know.

Probably after some legal advice the CDU stopped using the song.

Like Cosmetology School.

by Anonymousreply 21December 3, 2021 9:21 PM

Not at all, r17.

by Anonymousreply 22December 5, 2021 10:26 AM

Ok, my German is a little rusty - what is the title of that Nina Hagen song? "You Forgot the Color Film"???

by Anonymousreply 23December 5, 2021 9:11 PM

An allusion to the austerity/grayness of the East German regime

by Anonymousreply 24December 5, 2021 9:44 PM

Hillary wanted be Angela sooo much.

by Anonymousreply 25February 21, 2022 2:53 AM

She needs to perform the great song from "Babylon Berlin" (in full male drag), "Zu Asche, zu Staub":
