France and Britain spar over illegal migration, after at least 27 drown in English Channel

(CNN)British and French leaders have ramped up a war of words over dangerous crossings of the English Channel after at least 27 people died making the sea journey Wednesday, bringing to a head simmering tensions in the migration crisis.

Ministers from both sides of the Channel on Thursday laid blame with their counterparts after dozens of people -- including a young girl -- drowned in bitterly cold waters off the French coast when their inflatable vessel bound for Britain sank. It is one of the largest losses of life in the English Channel in recent years.

Iraqi Kurds appear to be among the victims, the Prime Minister of the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq said Thursday. Authorities are working to establish their identities, Masrour Barzani posted on Twitter, adding that "our thoughts are with their families." French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson both expressed horror at the tragedy, with Macron saying his country would not let the Channel become a graveyard. The leaders agreed to step up joint efforts to prevent the migrant crossings -- which have increased dramatically this year -- but also accused each other of not doing enough.

In a phone call on Wednesday night, Macron went further and urged Johnson to stop politicizing the migrant crisis for domestic political gain, according to a French readout of their conversation.

On Thursday morning, the finger-pointing continued among junior politicians.

These are the early days of what will become the Great Climate Migration. We're going to have parts of the world become basically uninhabitable due to dangerously high temperatures and/or loss of land from sea rise. The Middle East will be one of the areas that people will have to leave.

Expect increasing political instability, border wars, and a shift to hard-right nationalism as a reaction to tens of thousands of people massing at the borders as a routine thing.

Mass immigration from the Middle East to Europe will not be beneficial to the West. We already see that now in European countries. There’s strict censorship to make things not appear as bleak as they are.

Absolutely correct, R2.

Why don't they flee to far-east Asia, like India and China. Don't they have booming economies and lots of space?

Legal immigration gave us Barack Obama and Steve Jobs. Illegal immigration has given us...taxi drivers, day laborers and rapists?

by Anonymousreply 5November 25, 2021 3:12 PM

Note: The fathers of Barack Obama and Steve Jobs came to the US on student visas.

by Anonymousreply 6November 25, 2021 3:13 PM

r5 there are no Steve Jobs or Barack Obamas in this crowd.

by Anonymousreply 7November 25, 2021 4:27 PM

No^. Those immigrants are long gone.

Society has been at odds with Islam for centuries. Wars against Muslims were always the most brutal, most violent, most deadly. Muslims posing as “immigrants” would make people from past centuries laugh and cry.

The left has declared war on the West and is using illegals as human bullets. Not sorry that they drowned. Hope they all do, if they attempt to invade our countries.

Where was Allah when you needed him?!

Maybe if Trump hadn't abandoned the Kurds, this wouldn't have happened. Britain, too, is reaping what it sowed in the Middle East, where it meddled and created borders that had nothing to do with the people who lived there.

by Anonymousreply 12November 25, 2021 6:00 PM

Who'd have thought that opening their borders on three sides might result in people actually travelling through the country.

by Anonymousreply 13November 25, 2021 6:38 PM

The left in Europe will wail and beat their chest considering the 27 dead. Of the women killed by migrants in Sweden, Germany, etc., not a word except to screech RACISM when people dare pointing out the violent misogyny Europe has imported.

by Anonymousreply 14November 25, 2021 7:10 PM

France and Britain are really sniping back and forth at each other about this.

by Anonymousreply 15November 26, 2021 3:13 PM

France is 100% in the wrong. If people are departing from France, why is the UK the bad guy for trying to protect their borders? It's like a jail warden being pissed because a nearby homeowner wants the escaped prisoner to go back to jail.

Uh, no. It's happening due to 1,200 years of Islam, thousands of years of tribalism and way too many people and way too few resources. Gullible Europe is sinking in a socio-political quagmire, coming national suicide, due to its inability to say one simple word to invaders: No!

^^^ committing, not coming ^^^

by Anonymousreply 18November 26, 2021 4:08 PM

Europe is going to have a civil war over this, it can't continue.
