NYC school to segregate children by race to combat racism

On November 23 and 24, 7th and 8th graders at the Lower Manhattan Community Middle School are scheduled to begin their mornings by organizing themselves into racial identity "affinity groups."

This intentional act of segregation is being conducted in the name of undoing "the legacy of racism and oppression in this country." In an email sent to parents, Principal Shanna Douglas outlined five possible affinity groups the students could choose to join: Asians (who are 44 percent of the student population), whites (29 percent), a combined caucus of Hispanics and African Americans (15 percent and 8 percent, respectively), those identifying as multiracial, and people who wish to opt out of such classifications altogether.

"This optional program was developed in close coordination with both the School Leadership Team, PTA and families," New York City Department of Education (DOE) spokesperson Nathaniel Styer told the Post. "[It is] abundantly clear to both students and parents that anyone can opt-out of this two day celebration if they desire."

"Affinity groups allow people with a shared identity to meet with one another in an emotionally safe and brave space. Unlike legal racial segregation which was a tool to maintain white power and control, racial affinity groups are anti-racist spaces in which participants can build their skills and capacity to unlearn and dismantle racism."

"It's not enough to be, 'not racist.' That's just complicit," Matt Gonzales, an affinity group advocate and member of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's School Diversity Advisory Group, told the New York Post last year. "I think the idea around white allyship is that we want white people to be actively anti-racist."

As leading anti-racist consultant (including to public schools) Robin DiAngelo puts it in her recent book Nice White Racism, "Many white people do not have the skills to engage in cross-racial work without causing further harm….I have been leading white affinity groups for years, and there is a consistent pattern that emerges as soon as it is announced that we will be separating by racial group for a brief period of time (typically sixty to ninety minutes): white people panic."

Well that sounds like it will work out just fine!

by Anonymousreply 1November 24, 2021 4:29 PM

Good. This is good. Learning may even improve.

by Anonymousreply 2November 24, 2021 4:34 PM

I have a feeling this will backfire with voters.

by Anonymousreply 3November 24, 2021 4:37 PM

WHAT?!!!!!

The Justice Department needs to descend upon them like Gabriel.

This is so ignorant and fucked up it defies reason.

by Anonymousreply 4November 24, 2021 4:40 PM

Wait . . . is this The Onion? Did I just get punked?

by Anonymousreply 5November 24, 2021 4:41 PM

[quote]"Many white people do not have the skills to engage in cross-racial work without causing further harm…

[quote] that we will be separating by racial group for a brief period of time (typically sixty to ninety minutes): white people panic."

Another group pretending to "combat racism", but in reality promoting/fostering more of the same. Including the ludicrous (and racist) assumption that people have "affinity" due to skin color.

by Anonymousreply 6November 24, 2021 4:42 PM

I’m for segregation but my only concern is that these groups galvanize and become more violent and radicalized. Can you imagine an only Islam school in the US? Disaster.

by Anonymousreply 7November 24, 2021 4:42 PM

Sounds like Oz.

by Anonymousreply 8November 24, 2021 4:43 PM

Separate but equal affinity groups sounds like a fabulous idea!

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2021 4:51 PM

Isn’t NYC already segregated?

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2021 4:56 PM

Apartheid worked so well in South Africa!

by Anonymousreply 11November 24, 2021 4:59 PM

The logic behind this measure is admirable: "let's end racial prejudice by racially segregating children in closed communities!". I'm sure that its effects will be absolutely brilliant, and will lead to an elightened society that is colour-blind e completely egalitarian... Said no one.

by Anonymousreply 12November 24, 2021 5:02 PM

Yes but how has integration succeeded?

by Anonymousreply 13November 24, 2021 5:04 PM

Good - now the Asian students can do advanced calculus without being held back by the 'math is racist' loons.

by Anonymousreply 14November 24, 2021 5:08 PM

The right loves shit like this

by Anonymousreply 15November 24, 2021 5:09 PM

[quote]The logic behind this measure is admirable

No, the logic is imbecilic.

by Anonymousreply 16November 24, 2021 5:10 PM

I’m sure the immigrant West African parents will love their kids being grouped with the A-A kids.

by Anonymousreply 17November 24, 2021 5:24 PM

As long as they understand some groups are more equal than others this Animal Farm experiment will go swimmingly.

Jesus Christ it’s like waking up in crazy land.

by Anonymousreply 18November 24, 2021 5:25 PM

“A brave place”😂😂😂

by Anonymousreply 19November 24, 2021 5:29 PM

I’m not fully onboard with this after experiencing aspects of this in the workplace. But, I do reflect back on the idea of gays having a distinct space (bars, neighborhoods) that allowed for connection and a sense of safety. And lesbians often had their own.

by Anonymousreply 20November 24, 2021 5:35 PM

[quote]But, I do reflect back on the idea of gays having a distinct space (bars, neighborhoods) that allowed for connection and a sense of safety.

There is an enormous difference between a place to which people naturally gravitate and forcing people to segregate.

Also, there is difference between social choices, which are purely optional, and mandated rules to segregate people.

OP in the **Dem Strategist After Passage of Infrastructure Bill: “Too Late, We’re Fucked”** thread:

[quote]R51, woke politicians are also sending the country down the drain. Philly is paying the price for this with 500 murders in one year. Defunding the police, that gender shit, censorship, antisemitism, etc., are being brought to you by the Left. They’re no better than the Right and people are sick to death of being lectured how evil they are.

by Anonymousreply 22November 24, 2021 6:01 PM

[quote] a combined caucus of Hispanics and African Americans

So the Hispanics are going to be dumped together with the AAs?

And people wonder why Hispanics vote for the GOP?

Agreed.

by Anonymousreply 24November 24, 2021 6:14 PM

This is what I was trying to tell y’all!

by Anonymousreply 25November 24, 2021 6:23 PM

I no longer care if schools want to go down this insane road. All I care about now is that criminals are not prosecuted differently according to their race. No need to overcorrect for past injustice. Just deploy the law fairly for all.

by Anonymousreply 26November 24, 2021 6:28 PM

DiBlasio is leaving some legacy.

by Anonymousreply 27November 24, 2021 6:30 PM

Black Nationalists are the group that had the most influence on CRT, this is precisely what separated them from the freudomarxist Critical Legal Studies. Straining racial relations can only lead to a break, and the end-goal of CRT and other Black Nationalists has always been secession, segregation is just the middle-step; originating in people like Marcus Garvey who sang praise of Mussolini (until, of course, Mussolini began gassing Negroes in Ethiopia), passing through Sufi Abdul "Black Hitler" Hamid, and leading to MalcolmX (one of the most confused and ridiculous personages to ever grace the American political arena) who joined forces with the American Nazi Party. These superficial ideologies, ranging from Maoism to Islam, and philo-Fascism, only serve to strengthen the fragile identities of these Black Nationalists who can't cope with their lowly past and need to project themselves in the proletarian revolutionary masses, the spawn of some ancient nation, the faithful of some sort or whatever they can latch onto. The whiteys that aid these secessionists are either deluded urbanite liberals searching for some moral feelgood, or dedicated academics for whom it's their only living, professional charlatans. The guy who drove into a crowd in Waukesha is just the after-effects of this new-wave of Black Nationalism, he even shared these made-up quotes about Hitler, that have been for a long time making the rounds through Black Israelite and Nation of Islam groups.

[quote]A Manhattan public middle school is asking students to segregate themselves next week as part of a "two day celebration" against segregation

It's just for a 2 day event, not that I think that makes it any better.

by Anonymousreply 29November 24, 2021 6:36 PM

[quote] It's just for a 2 day event, not that I think that makes it any better.

That doesn't make it any less monstrous. I would hope that most of the students and their parents would have the good sense to opt out.

by Anonymousreply 30November 24, 2021 6:48 PM

We knew you Yankees would eventually see things our way

by Anonymousreply 31November 24, 2021 7:06 PM

This is the result of opening up "better" professions to everyone. That was a great thing to happen but it meant that the really smart people left the teaching profession because they now had other options and went to law school, other intellectually more taxing or more lucrative professions. It left the kids mostly in the hands of those with not the best brains or the best judgment.

That said, I realize there are still those in the teaching profession who are smart and capable.

by Anonymousreply 32November 24, 2021 7:10 PM

It’s shit like this that makes me so annoyed when you see those faux frustration comments like “Sigh, people who complain about CRT don’t know what CRT is.”

No, we know what it is. We just reject it. Just because a black professor with braids from an “esteemed” HBC where the only barometer of entry is not having committed a felony before the age of 18 says something, it does not mean it’s true or something we should take seriously, especially when it goes beyond any reasonable expectation of society and seems fueled by their own bitterness, incompetence, and deep seated hatred of white people.

by Anonymousreply 33November 24, 2021 7:22 PM

R30, I agree. I only posted that quote because it seems too many people here didn't bother reading the article.

by Anonymousreply 34November 24, 2021 7:24 PM

"Starting today, African-American children will use the water fountain on the first floor. All other Children of Color will use the water fountain on the second floor. White children not be permitted to use the school's water fountains, but will bring their own water in approved recyclable bottles."

W T F !

by Anonymousreply 36November 24, 2021 7:51 PM

well, they are becoming true US citizens... divided to be better ruled, at war with each other rather than united to cut the head of the most destructive country in the world... after all, every generation before them has gladly accepted this early enforcement of 'racial' boundaries... the worst fear of US rulers since the creation of the country : unity.

R7 In my area there are three all-Muslim schools within 10 miles of my home. They are private schools.

Secession from what? Where are they going to go?

Rightwing Stormfront, leftwing Stormfront. Tomato, tomathto, R40.
