Ann B. Davis did NOT make the lez-lez

... according to Sherwood Schwartz.

[quote]Schwartz said that Davis never married. And while he knew her, she never had a relationship either, which, for the decade, was odd. So her choice to remain single caused rumors to spread. The producer revealed that he spoke with Davis about her personal life on one occasion, and the actress illuded that a bad relationship made her swear off men for good. And in turn, she never had the chance to start a family of her own.

[quote]“She was never married and everybody suspected that she was gay. [Ann] and I actually talked about it and she said, ‘No, I have lots of issues, but that’s not one of them,’” Lloyd continued. “She told me she once had a relationship, I think with a married guy or something, and it ended badly. I don’t know that she ever had anything else after that. But that’s almost apocryphal.”

Mmm. Ann B. was deeply religious. I suspect she was stuck in the closet somewhere back in Narnia. Poor Alice!

We've been to this rodeo before. She was a pretty obvious lesbian. her religion was a backward form of Episcopalianism. She basically was part of a cult under a guy named William Frey.

by Anonymousreply 1November 23, 2021 3:11 AM

Maybe she was a devout Lesbyterian?

by Anonymousreply 2November 23, 2021 3:14 AM

She was a dedicated Episcopalian volunteer and lived in the household of the bishop in Denver (Bishop Frey), and moved with them when they left Denver for Pennsylvania, and then went with them to San Antonio. She was still living with the Freys at the time she fell and died shortly afterwards. She was very healthy so the injury death was shocking.

There never was any public information about her sexuality, but if sublimation had a face....

by Anonymousreply 3November 23, 2021 3:21 AM

Frey was a retrograde cleric who organized a "commune". She wasn't a volunteer, she was a cult member. And Episcopalianism seems like a non fun way to do it, unless he was modern enough to stock good gin.

by Anonymousreply 11November 23, 2021 3:52 AM

Toward the end of her life Ann was taken in by a group to help her with problems she was having. Someone asked them (thinly veiled) if they accepted same-sex people to help and the head man said "Yes."

She was a lesbian ahead of the times and probably had issues with 'coming out' back in the day. I believe she was gay.

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2021 3:53 AM

Poor Ann B. I like to imagine her and DL fave Mary Wickes scissoring the night away in the 1950s.

a religious couple for so long doesn't come as any shock to me.

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2021 1:17 PM

When I was much more closeted, I told people I'd been in a very bad relationship and that had left me sour on dating to keep people from suspecting I was gay. And that was in the 1990s.

Seems Ann B used the same story decades earlier. Can only imagine what it must have been like in the 1960s and 1970s for a woman working in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2021 3:30 PM

Has there ever been anyone, a woman or a man, to come forward or to be discovered to have had a relationship with her?

I've always figured she was asexual or close to it.

Even if Ann was gay, some of you actually think there aren't both gay and straight people who have given up on relationships? This is definitely a reality for a lot of people.

I know people, gay and straight, who, after bad emotional and physically abusive relationships, have chosen to stop dating. Some had fuck buddies on and off while others have simply chosen not to bother with any kind of relationship.

One person, a gay man, who was a former fashion model, he never had problems meeting men, is now in his late 50s. He hasn't been a relationship for many years. He fills his time running his small business, takes care of his pets, has many hobbies and many friends. Lots of people don't feel the need to be in a romantic partnership.

Don't "Sure Jan" me either. I know these people personally. I don't find their choices weird. People can spend years looking for their soul mate, sometimes they never find them, others have settled, they're mostly miserable.

R44 Ann actually did the 700 Club back in the 90s after Robert Reed had died from AIDS.

According to that Brady Bunch E! True Hollywood special (that aired in the late 90s where it revealed that Reed & Davis had some heated words over his script concerns), her appearance on there seemed like a big F U to recently deceased Reed.

I'm surprised the there wasn't any controversy from the media, Hollywood or the LGBT community over that. Robertson tore into gays, AIDS & Reed so it seemed like Ann was lending her name to his far right causes.

by Anonymousreply 74November 23, 2021 10:50 PM

Even as a preteen baby gay with virtually no real knowledge of lesbianism, I thought Alice was likely much more into Mrs. Brady rather than Sam the Butcher. I also that knew Nancy Kulp, Edith Head, my piano teacher and my uber-dyke swimming instructor were "ladies who liked ladies."

But I had terrible gaydar when it came to men, other than obvious ones like Rip Taylor, Liberace, and C.N. Reilly. When my mom told me Rock Hudson and George Maharis were gay (I was probably a young teen), I was surprised.

by Anonymousreply 96November 24, 2021 1:30 AM

R90 No, because 99.9% of people I don't feel like that about, and I suspect them of being gay, bi, lez, or straight. It is just a few people that I don't think of as sexual based on their public persona, Ann B. Davis was one of the few I just get no sexual vibes from. Nancy Kulp, for instance, I had no problem clocking her as a lesbian from the outset. Robert Reed I could sense even as a child that he was "different," even if I didn't understand why at the time. Ann just always seemed to me like a woman who was happier sitting at home knitting and reading the Bible, than fucking with anyone.

by Anonymousreply 97November 24, 2021 1:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 98November 24, 2021 1:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 99November 24, 2021 1:35 AM

Allan Melvin (Sam the Butcher) must’ve been super rich. He appeared on virtually every sitcom as either recurring character or a guest star.

I used to know someone whose father was a character actor. They lived in a mansion in Beverly Hills. I never heard of his father and didn’t recognize him as anyone familiar when I saw him on a Perry Mason rerun. But being a character actor was good money.

Character actors were often wealthier than stars of tv shows. They kept working for years while the stars got cancelled when their shows did.

Allan Melvin had to be one of the steadiest workers in television.

by Anonymousreply 113November 24, 2021 4:42 PM

From what I see in this thread. Ann was either asexual or a lesbian. Bible thumping either way would nix the concept of any exploration of her sexuality.

Robert Reed was such a DILF before the atrocious perm. I think he had naturally curly hair (which he rocked in later years) too so it seemed unnecessary. Florence said she knew he was gay when they had to kiss or share a bed. She didn't seem judgmental at all and loved him regardless. She was a lovely person.

by Anonymousreply 114November 24, 2021 4:53 PM

R110- Allan Melvin the actor who played Sam was also on All In The Family and Archie Bunker's Place and according to Jason Wingreen the actor who played Harry the bartender, Melvin said nigger frequently on the set of the show(s) when referring to black people. Melvin was the REAL Archie Bunker.

by Anonymousreply 116November 24, 2021 5:32 PM

R115 yep. That was common. So was claiming to be sisters. I've also heard older gay men would adopt younger lovers so they would get inheritance.

by Anonymousreply 117November 24, 2021 5:35 PM

She was very obviously lesbian, but she was from a different generation and she was super-religious so she was never going to come out.

by Anonymousreply 118November 24, 2021 6:15 PM

I've known several older lesbians who were also super religious.

The religious angle was a good cover for them. It gave the illusion that someone that devout could never possibly commit a since like homosexuality.

At the same time, they also found comfort from the faith and somehow coming to some kind of peace with their religious and their sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 119November 24, 2021 7:08 PM

Yikes, that should be "commit a sin like homosexuality."

by Anonymousreply 120November 24, 2021 7:14 PM

We can't really understand what it was like for that generation. Homosexuality was against the law and seen as sick and perverted. Gays from that era all had so many psychological scars.

by Anonymousreply 128November 24, 2021 8:01 PM

Another thing is women on average have a smaller sex drive than men. It's easier for a woman to focus on other things than sex. Also dildos exist.

by Anonymousreply 129November 24, 2021 8:17 PM

She may have been accepting of her sexuality, doubtful...I think it sucks that if you are a celebrity there’s an expectation that people I have a right to know about your private life. That would really suck If I were an actor I would do my best to keep my personal life separate from my career and in interviews out focus on that... It’s a celebrities that are dying for attention that serve their life up on a platter to the public, famewhore style.

Rip Taylor read some reporter the bitters when he assumed that Rip was gay.

by Anonymousreply 131November 24, 2021 10:07 PM

How very dare you!

by Anonymousreply 132November 24, 2021 10:08 PM

Why was she living in communes in her latter years - was she broke?

by Anonymousreply 133November 24, 2021 10:09 PM

"You see, I had a very unfortunate relationship very early in my life. I was hurt so deeply, when he told me he thought I was a dyke, that I swore off men forever!"

by Anonymousreply 134November 24, 2021 10:13 PM

Its interesting that people claim to be outraged by Will Smith speaking publicly about his sex life and the same people talk shit about Ann B Davis for not speaking publicly about her sex life.

by Anonymousreply 135November 24, 2021 10:29 PM

It's almost like people are here for pointless bitchery.

by Anonymousreply 136November 24, 2021 10:36 PM

FYI gays: In R112's pic, Allen Melvin and Don Knotts are standing in front of Aunt Pittypat's house, on the old Back Forty lot. Sadly, her porch had been removed, not sure about the lawn jockey.

Ann B. Davis had a raucous sex life!

by Anonymousreply 138November 24, 2021 10:51 PM

If you watch The Brady Bunch, you can see Carol's pussy juice on Alice's upper lip in several episodes.

by Anonymousreply 139November 24, 2021 11:10 PM

Are you sure it wasn't Tang?

by Anonymousreply 140November 24, 2021 11:58 PM

Pooty Tang!

by Anonymousreply 141November 25, 2021 12:02 AM

Or Wesson oil.

Les B. Ann

Spinster Women without families would often become nuns late in life, so they had someone to take care of them in their old age.

by Anonymousreply 144November 25, 2021 2:33 AM

I highly doubt Carol would have scissored with Alice (since she was getting to ride Mike's 10" hog every night), but it was the 70s and time of sexual freedoms so......

by Anonymousreply 145November 25, 2021 2:33 AM

R124- I could EASILY picture Ann B. Davis as a nun if she weren't Protestant.

by Anonymousreply 146November 25, 2021 2:35 AM

Florence seems chill and accepting. Her TV husband was gay and her TV housekeeper was lez. Didn't seem to judge either way.

by Anonymousreply 147November 25, 2021 2:37 AM

Flo had a horrible childhood, nothing phased her

by Anonymousreply 148November 25, 2021 2:39 AM

And Flo, she don't know

'Cause the boy she wed was a hom-e-o

by Anonymousreply 149November 25, 2021 2:42 AM

they're called nuns cause they get none

by Anonymousreply 150November 25, 2021 2:43 AM

[quote] (since she was getting to ride Mike's 10" hog every night),

It was actually Mike who was doing all the 10" hog riding.

by Anonymousreply 151November 25, 2021 2:44 AM

Flo was mad that she didn't get the role of Shirley Partridge

by Anonymousreply 152November 25, 2021 2:47 AM

[quote] It was actually Mike who was doing all the 10" hog riding.

So that's what he was up to at the office. "Drawing up blueprints" was code for 'legs up in the sling'.

by Anonymousreply 153November 25, 2021 2:47 AM

The episode where Alice taught Carol how to use a vibrator was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 154November 25, 2021 2:50 AM

[quote] Flo was mad that she didn't get the role of Shirley Partridge

She couldn't have been that mad after a while. The Brady Bunch was still recognizable prior to her death. The Partridge Family fell into obscurity much quicker.

by Anonymousreply 155November 25, 2021 2:52 AM

Alice's Bible. She put it on Carol's side table.

Alice had an avocado green melmac dildo that Carol took for a spin once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 159November 25, 2021 4:05 AM

Why did Alice always have to wear a maid's outfit? It was humiliating.

by Anonymousreply 160November 25, 2021 4:20 AM

R160 The whole show was written for kids. Like they had to remind the young audience, Alice was the housekeeper all the time and they barely showed she had a life outside the Bradys besides the appearance of her boyfriend Sam once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 161November 25, 2021 4:24 AM

"Why did Alice always have to wear a maid's outfit? It was humiliating."

Um, maybe because she was the... maid

" Alice was the housekeeper all the time and they barely showed she had a life outside the Bradys"

Tell me about it...

Remember when they took her to Hawaii and Carol made Alice clean the hotel rooms and make the beds.

I worked with Flo Henderson's daughter Barbara. She's maybe the loveliest person I ever met, inside and out. If she's any indication, Florence was a very cool person.

by Anonymousreply 166November 26, 2021 6:21 PM

I know this thread is about Ann B. and not Florence, but I wanted to add how much I admired Florence Henderson. As others mentioned, she had a difficult early life. She talks about her mother in this short clip with Rosie O’Donnell.

Florence had a great sense of humour.

Florence was beautiful inside and out. And a great actress and singer. She truly loved Robert and Ann for who they were. It's nice to know that the Brady clan in real life is like a real family. Even though Robert and Eve felt the show a waste of their talent, they were still willing to do all the reunions and I don't think it was just for money.

by Anonymousreply 169November 26, 2021 10:53 PM

Chris and Eve made an appearance in Gregg Araki's very gay campy arthouse film Nowhere.
