Jennifer Lawrence - I Was Paid LESS Than Leo DiCaprio But #1 In Billing!
“I was number one on the call sheet, so….” Lawrence says with a laugh during a sit-down with Vanity Fair, on newsstands Nov. 30. “And I thought [the credits] should reflect that. Leo was very gracious about it. I think we had something called a ‘Laverne & Shirley’, which is this billing they invented where it’s an equal billing. But I guess maybe somewhere down the line, I kicked the stone further, like, ‘What if it wasn’t equal?’”
Though her name appears first in the film’s opening credits, the 31-year-old Oscar winner insists she’s fine with earning less than her co-star in this instance.
“Look, Leo brings in more box office than I do. I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal,” she says. Lawrence reportedly earned $25 million to DiCaprio’s $30 million payouts.
While she says she is happy with her deal for “Don’t Look Up”, Lawrence knows that’s not always the case for women when dealing with gender pay inequality.
“But in other situations, what I have seen — and I’m sure other women in the workforce have seen as well — is that it’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay,” she says. “And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.”

So the budget is already $55 billion just hiring these two? I think it was money down the drain as any girl in her part wouldn’t have made a difference in the movie. You don’t even recognize it’s her. They could have saved $24 million and hired Katie Holmes.

No, she’s not a draw at all. Women hate her and men forgot who she is. They would more recognize Scarlett-Joe Hanson. Unlike DiCaprio who is a draw for both men and women.

People have been saying she should go for supporting actress which made me think her role is smallish.
So Leo is the star of the film but let her have top billing?

Women don't hate Lawrence. They used to love her, but then she got overexposed in both meanings of the word, so her popularity tanked a bit, but she's not hated. Now that she's been out of sight for a bit, I wouldn't be surprised if she made a comeback. Leo has an excellent track record for picking movies, so I think she's got a shot with this one.

Her main fanbase was teenage girls and young women because of The Hunger Games. Straight dudes found her hot too. Regardless, she got a lot of critical acclaim for her acting talent prior because of Winter's Bone. She definitely forced heavily onto people's throats in the mid-2010s and she showed her trailer trash background a bit. She was smart to take a break (attention spans are short nowadays) and a comeback is due. She came a long way since doing that crappy Bill Engvall sitcom as a teen.

R8 because it DID bother her, and that's why she said it, but then tried to obfuscate it under *but I'm really grateful and think it was probably fair".
Guessing she's had some discussions with her agent about coming across as a difficult sow in her interviews. Part of the reason no one wanted to hire her for a bit was because she was both overexposed and annoying.

Leo is first billed in the advertising and I guess she gets first billing on the actual film.
(or is it Laverne and Shirley where one is higher than the other? I forget how that she was billed. I remember Cheers having that odd billing. Didn't The Towering Inferno start it? On the AMC Behind the Scenes they did a whole segment on it. Steve McQueen was lower on the left, Newman higher on the right. Then William Holden got into it and was one step down from both of them but had to be above Miss Dunaway's billing.)
Miss Dunaway's evening gown should have got top billing. That was just stunning and gave the best performance.

There was publicity (I guess she started it) about her being the lowest paid in American Hustle.

Her casting in Silver Linings Playbook changed the whole film and made it a bit odd.
In the book the woman is like 40 and the guy like 33. When she starts stalking him when he jogs he's repulsed and wants her to stop. Then he gets to know her.
In the movie it is so odd. He's depressed because his wife left him then some beautiful 22 year old becomes infatuated with him . Most men would have totally forgotten about the wife and just been delighted with the 22 year old.

LOL...if "JLaw" is such a huge star, then where are her fans when she needs them? These hoardes of mystery fans certainly aren't showing up in enough numbers to warrant her earning $25m a film...that number seems....unlikely.
Her biggest hits are the Hunger Game films when she DID star in but those films helped make her a star...she didn't bring the star power at that point. Her other biggest hits are the X-Men films, another example of the title being the star in an ensemble package of name actors.
After that, you get her non-franchise films and none of them are huge blockbusters. Passengers did ok. Worldwide gross of $300m is nice but in today's terms....meh.
Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were succesful arty dramas that were profitable and sucessful but again, they were ensemble films with multiple stars. All her other films are low grossers...some might be profitable just because the budgets were super small (she has several indies on her resume) but nothing like a major hit.
She's NEVER carried a hit film solely on her name.

She is a good actress. She doesn't need to be a big star anyway. Having an acclaimed filmography is more important towards being a serious actress than a "movie star". Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts were movie stars but nobody takes them as actresses on par with Kathy Bates, Meryl Streep, Frances McDormand, etc.
To be honest, Leo only became a big star because of Titanic. If that didn't happen, he would still have a career based on his talent but he's one of the rare movie stars that had serious talent. Compare him to Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Matt Damon who range from serviceable to good. Leo had phenomenal performances (though I think he seriously declined with age).

Why on earth would you shell out $55m for DiCaprio and Lawrence plus even more money for Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Chris Evans, Tyler Perry, Mark Rylance, and Timotay? I mean, potentially $75m+ just for the cast of what is essentially a Netflix movie and one being labeled as a satire (and we know how well satire plays in Mittel Amerika).
Netflix is obviously a money laundering outfit. Or, they just spend ridiculous amounts of money on shit and get huge tax breaks.

r74 I don't mean to say she didn't deserve it for SLP. She's good in the film even if the casting is odd. A cop's widow at 22?
Yeah she won for Winter's Bone, being in a franchise that made her well known and the competition was weak. Emmaurle Riva I guess was good but (didn't see it and I don't think others did until it was too late in the voting)
Jessica Chastain was the big competition and she was sort of bland in Zero Dark Thirty which is annoying since it is such a good film.
Naomi Watts was just average and Que Wallis was a kid.

R73, you realize you just listed almost all of JLaws films:
Hunger Games franchise
X Men franchise
Passengers
Silver Linings Playbook (Oscar win)
American Hustle (Oscar Nominated)
The films you didn't mention:
Mother and Red Sparrow which both tanked.
Joy and Winter's Bone, Oscar nominated for both and did fine.
So, she has two misses. I guess these are the two films you're referring to that her fans didn't support? Okay. I guess. But that happens with every star.
She also has: Four Oscar noms. Two hit franchises. Some big unlikely BO hits. Some films that were just okay. Not bad for a career that's only a decade plus long.
And it seems she's gonna get another nom and have another hit on her hand with Don't Look Up.
I would say that means she's a damn big star. Like it or not.

R37 Yeah all Harvey Weinstein movies who was a hard Oscar campaigner.
She hasn’t done shit since.
Her career was over the moment Weinstein went to prison. He was behind “Silver Linings Playbook”, “American Hustle”, and “Joy”.
You know why her movie “Serena” in 2014 with Bradley Cooper tanked after doing 2 hit movies Oscar nominated with him in 2012 and 2013? Cause Weinstein wasn’t involved in it.

R85 “Passengers” performed pretty poorly. There were tons of articles written about how 2 popular franchise actors were incapable of making an original hit movie.
“Passengers” was the realization super hero actors can’t sell tickets outside of franchises.
Wasn’t it all over Datalounge? Lol.
And Jennifer Lawrence proved that with “Mother” and “Red Sparrow”.

If you start from 2015 — 6 years ago.
“Joy” was a flop.
“X-Men: Apocalypse“ was a hit for Fox. Billion dollar comic book movie? No. But ok.
“Passengers” was a flop. $100 million in the US on a $150 million budget. It did $300 worldwide but that’s definitely not how the movie studio looked at it.
“Mother!” was a big flop.
“Red Sparrow” was a dud. I think it broke even but still branded a flop.
And the last X-Men movie “Dark Phoenix” was a flop.
So you guys have to be talking about pre-2015 to be talking about how big of a star Jennifer Lawrence is.

Julia Roberts has had way more huge hits than Nicole Kidman. And, Roberts was the star lead in many of her films.
Kidman has never been the star lead in any huge hit film...not like Roberts has. But, Roberts did all those romcoms and thrillers, something that Kidman doesn't really do.
Which doesn't mean she's not a star but very few women get to be THE headliner in mainstream films nowadays. And, they have to do mostly crap to earn that status.

That's why she has such odd pauses between her films - while filming, she gets knocked up by some guy, gives birth (she carries flat so people can't really tell she's pregnant) and then has an unholy sacrifice wherein she presents the baby to the god and watches, hungrily, as its soul is devoured. Moloch heals her and she begins the cycle again.
The next day, she starts filming her new project, already scoping out a new man to provide her with the seed to produce her next soul-sacrifice. It's also why she gets progressively worse in films the longer the shooting goes on, and why's she's best in smaller, compressed roles.
It's shocking and horrific, but that's Hollywood.

R108 you are really a fucking idiot. You can't coast on being the biggest female movie star in the world for over a decade? I guess Marylin Monroe, the Hepburns, and other major stars who never attained the same achievements should never be revered. You are quite dim. And no. Even globally Julia Roberts Q rating is far beyond Nicole's. And the accomplishments aren't even in the same neighborhood which I'm sure even Nicole would acknowledge. Are you like 19?

Roberts is more of a personality actress. She's always sort of a variation of Julia Roberts. The star wattage. The likeability.
Kidman started out as a glamour girl but has really become a transformational actress. She disappears into her characters. Roberts doesn't try that. Lots of great movie stars didn't.
Comparing them is kind of pointless since they are such different types.

By success standards alone Julia Roberts is one of the most if not the most successful actresses ever in Hollywood. That is not just a casual mention. That's the reason so many others respect her. As someone mentioned on another thread she has the Madonna magic that when she walks into a room EVERYONE mentions it.

I think Jonah Hill is going to win Supporting Actor. He's the only one (hard to believe) generating much excitement in the category.
I don't think Lawrence will win. Leo might for climate reasons that he's active in.

Ryan Murphy a lot of times thinks he is doing satire but is doing a soap opera instead but no one gets that. This is high end satire. And all the actors get it which makes it fun. It's fun movie.

Jennifer Lawrence is very consistent in giving strong performances, even in movies that are not box office hits. She was great in "Mother" and "Red Sparrow", her two bog flops, if you want to look at just credible acting. As others have said, Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock are movie starts, but I think Jennifer Lawrence will ultimately be known as a serious actress like Meryl or the less beloved Glen. You can always count on these actresses to give solid performances regardless of the material.

With Julia (now old enough to play Jennifer Lawrence’s mother), they are paying for her brand and hopes that the movie draws attention and money.
Her last big hit was Eat, Pray, Love, all the way back in 2010.
She was not nominated for Ben is Back or Homecoming.

I saw this yesterday and while I enjoyed it I thought it was way too long (2 hours 25 minutes!) and not as strong as it could have been. Lawrence is good but her character doesn’t have much to do the last half hour or so. Leo definitely gets the flashier lead role.
And this will make me sound very SJW but will thrill most Dataloungers: it’s a very white movie. The few actors of color are relegated to very small supporting roles, mostly negative. Even Rob Morgan as a fellow scientist helping Leo and JLaw doesn’t do much aside from encouraging the white leads to save the world. Just stood out to me.

Jennifer Lawrence whose filmography is mostly full of shitty bad tentpole crap like The Hunger Games and X-Men and a couple of successful art house dramas.
Uh huh.
And, to be fair, both Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock have a long list of shit movies on their resumes but those are long lists of shitty HITS, many of which they were the primary star of.
Again, Jennifer Lawrence has NEVER carried a film on her own. Not once. To be honest, I kind of doubt she has it in her.

Sandra Bullock has two big films in the can for 2022...some nutty adventure thing with Channing Tatum which sounds a lot like "Romancing the Stone" and a big Brad Pitt thriller that takes place on a bullet train.

Julia Roberts is 54 and seems to have deliberately slowed down in filmmaking in recent years.
Maybe she is brooding about her career slowing down or maybe she's just rich and successful and enjoying being a mom.
I mean, if Julia Roberts wanted to do film and TV projects, she certainly could. Her agent could call up Netflix or HBO and say, "Julia is looking for a partner on her new big project" and they'd both be interested.
If Jennifer Lawrence did the same thing the first question they would ask, "Who would be co-starriong with you?"

R215 An Oscar nomination for what?
Did she produce a short film up for consideration this year?
She's certainly not getting a nomination for Don't Look At This Awful Movie....other than her zealous fans on this thread and some paid shills, no one is predicting an Oscar for her for this year in that turkey of a movie.

Im sure the Academy also knows its probably a good idea if Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for an Oscar. Not that she doesn't deserve it. But come on

The industry loves her because she is very reassuring to their long predictable business model of “Star Inhabits an Archetype and therefore Delivers Box Office,” and the industry loves the comfort of the familiar. She’s probably the last female star who rose to the top by coming up in the predictable manner that stars had come up in for decades. Everything was steadily changing with streaming and then COVID-19 hastened the change and now feature films have lost their luster and are now just another piece of content. All it will take will be a handful of “traditional formula” hits a year to convince the major studios that what they have done for years still works and the big paydays for a select few will continue.

R123 Pretty Woman made her just like Basic Instinct made Sharon Stone and both have appeared in barely mediocre films at best in the last 2 decades.

The big test for Julia and Sandra is whether their films next year do well. If either bomb, they will be paid less. They both are really crass commercial products but it will be telling if they have lost their BO magic.

Julia Roberts' rise to stardom isn't even close to how Sharon Stone became famous for flashing her pussy. Sharon Stone was never a real movie star.

I like Lawrence as well, although I think she has been miscast and doesn't seem to have the most discerning judgment when it comes to picking projects that are right for her. It will be interesting to see where she goes now that she's in her 30s.

I have to agree. I think Jennifer Lawrence is America's most favorite. I'm sorry but most dudebros think Sanda Bullock and Julia Roberts are like old actresses. They jerk off to JLaw.

I'm not even a Julia Roberts fan but it's ridiculous to compare Sharon Stone and her.
JR has had more hits over a longer period of time.
Sharon Stone had Basic Instinct as her big hit, Casino as her big prestige film and that's pretty much it.

Julia Roberts was America's Sweetheart for about 15years. I think JLaw officially gets the crown now. R231 huh. I have 10-15 youngsters in my family that love JLaw and think Sandra Bullock is an old lesbian actress.

I don't hate JLaw. She was everywhere for a while and became annoying. The Harvey stuff too - I have no doubt she benefitted from his, uh, attentions. But I liked her in American Hustle and a couple of other movies, so I'll probably see the Leo thing. She looks really good in the Vanity Fair profile.
The JR stans around here sound exactly like what I imagine Julia Roberts to be like in person: cunty and bitchy.

Everyone in here taking about "millennial dudebros" is dead wrong. She has never had a hit herself.
Was paid a fortune, along with Chris Pratt, for "Passengers" which didn't become a hit and got shitty reviews.
Mother! was a divisive failure
Red Sparrow was forgettable and didn't turn much profit.

Many of the posters are missing the point: Jennifer Lawrence was created and became a movie star via the traditional industry path of which Julia Roberts was the modern template: a hit movie where her archetype was established. Since the silent era audiences have made movie stars out of actors they connected with and could assign a type to. Naturally, every decade—more or less—is derivative of the prior decade (so Roberts was a bigger star in 1991 than Lawrence was in 2011 because the landscape was different by then…no Internet to dilute fame in 1991. In my opinion, Lawrence was the last star made the old fashioned way. Hollywood is loathe to admit this no longer works…the Internet, social/IG, blogs, paparazzi photos, television, streaming, tiny screens, the death of movie theaters…it all has an effect on what being a movie star is today. So, the industry will latch onto Lawrence, even amidst diminishing box office returns.

Hollywood tends to repeat itself and the big stars get what they want, up to a point. Do I think Jennifer and Julia are worth $25 million per film? No way, based on their recent performance. But CAA and some MBA type is justifying their price as potential revenue.

Why is anyone paying these ladies $25 million? For their name? Julia is over/over 50/unappealing and Jennifer has been out of the game for three years. It's mad money from Netflix.
Also, once you take out the agent's commission, legal fees, taxes, etc. they will end up with $10 million if they are lucky. Most of their movies turn out rotten, so it seems like a giant waste of money.

JLaw was bought every single one of those Oscar nods by Swinestein. Why do her frau stans/PR shills keep bringing her Oscar nods out like it's impressive? I'm no Jane Fonda fan, but she's like Bette Davis compared to this annoying bitch.
