New lead in the search for Jimmy Hoffa
The latest effort appears to be tied to interviews given by a man named Frank Cappola, who was a teenager in the 1970s. He said he worked at the old PJP Landfill in Jersey City with his father, Paul Cappola.
Cappola said his dying father in 2008 explained how Hoffa’s body was delivered to the landfill in 1975, placed in a steel drum and buried with other barrels, bricks and dirt, according to Moldea.
Paul Cappola, worried that police might be watching that day, dug a hole on New Jersey state property, about 100 yards from the landfill, and dumped the unmarked barrel there, Moldea said Friday.
“Then he put 15 to 30 steel drums on top of it, which were filled with toxic adhesives, and bulldozed the area flat,” Moldea said.

Apparently you can move 100 yards away and can dig a hole big enough for 15-30 barrels to fit in and the police will not see it. Not to mention that 15-30 is not something anyone would say.

I wonder how many millions the FBI and other law enforcement have spent looking for him. Wasn't it just a few years ago that they dug up a driveway and tore down a barn after another questionable tip or three? He was either illegally cremated, or cut up and fed to hogs.

Iirc, from reading an article in Vanity Fair a few decades ago, an FBI source, on background, stated that they found a deathbed statement from someone they believe be credible to be what happened: Hoffa's body was immediately cremated and his ashes were thrown out of a window of a moving car.
Speculation is fun, but real life informs us that the these things are done very matter-of-factly by way of the easiest and most convenient way.

The expectant culture that came about around Hoffa's remains lasted forever, it seemed, decades at least. Jokes on late night TV from Johnny Carson, constant nightly news segments about Hoffa, his disappearance, and possible leads.
The best part about this thread is, that despite being a '70s child, I had no idea he was killed in Detroit. Every news report I'd heard made him sound like an east coast mob casualty. So much talk about the Meadowlands. Aa the though the mob would risk a traffic stop with a corpse on a day long drive to NYC or Jersey.
Why spend my money on a wild goose chase, again?

For R44. From Wiki:
[quote]James Riddle Hoffa (born February 14, 1913 – disappeared July 30, 1975, declared dead July 30, 1982) was an American labor union leader who served as the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) from 1957 until 1971. ... Hoffa became involved with organized crime from the early years of his Teamsters work, a connection that continued until his disappearance in 1975. He was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, conspiracy, and mail and wire fraud in 1964 in two separate trials. He was imprisoned in 1967 and sentenced to 13 years. In mid-1971, he resigned as president of the union as part of a commutation agreement with US President Richard Nixon and was released later that year, but Hoffa was barred from union activities until 1980. Hoping to regain support and to return to IBT leadership, he unsuccessfully tried to overturn the order. Hoffa disappeared on July 30, 1975. He is believed to have been murdered by the Mafia and was declared legally dead in 1982. Hoffa's legacy continues to stir debate.

R18 here. It would be an interesting psychological study to figure out why Americans are so obsessed with conspiracies such as JFK's death, Hoffa's death, Howard Hughes' death, and 9/11.
As someone above stated, the truth is normally very boring and straightforward compared to what we imagine and/or conjure up. You don't hear much about Germans questioning Hitler's death. Or Russians questioning the Romanoffs' death. Do we feel more of a need to investigate and question just because we are in a democratic society here in the US?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 20, 2021 2:08 PM

It may be related to our individualistic society. Believing in a conspiracy can make you feel distinguished and special compared to the average “sheeple,” which is perhaps why lots of conspiracy theorists are people down on their luck who might otherwise feel like losers in American society.

I actually suggested that in a conversation with a friend, r51. My question too is do we really have more of a percentage of people compared to the rest of the world who are into conspiracy theories? Or is it that they’re about the same and our enormous social media culture just makes it appear that there are more than there are.

I do think there is a lot mixing things together there r51. I admit I'm drawn to the JFK conspiracy stuff, and like so many I just don't believe Oswald shot him for no particular reason and that Jack Ruby shot Oswald to save Jackie the pain of some Oswald Trial.
The others? Well, I'm not sure there is really a lot of conspiracy theory around Hoffa. I think it's pretty clear and most people accept that the mob killed him, cause he was all tangled up in mob business and was a threat in some way. If the government tried to release some silly statement that it was all an unfortunate mugging gone awry or a kidnapping by some crazy serial killer, there would definitely be some "conspiracy" theory stuff going on because the official finding would be pretty ridiculous.
Don't know much about Hughes' death, and don't buy the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld knew about 9/11 or planned it stuff, so I'll give you that.
I am curious if Russians really believe any official explanation of the Romanovs' death. WAS there even an official explanation during the Soviet Union, or was it all, we don't talk about that. And in both Soviet Russia and Putin's Russia, I can't imagine any sane person believes any official government statement about most anything really, so if that is all it takes to be a conspiracy theorist, I would think it's a whole nation of conspiracy theorists.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 20, 2021 10:42 PM

And I'll add, just because I am intrigued now, there is a rich tradition of conspiracies, and exaggerated fear of conspiracies in Europe, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. Marxists, Communists, Freemasons, Fascists, Nazis, Monarchists, Bonarpartists, Serbian Black Hand, damn it was one long roll call of conspiracies all over the continent for almost a century, and of course on the other side, people sure that behind every reform proposal was a wild-eyed anarchist conspiring to overthrow well, somebody!
Not sure if modern western Europeans have completely ditched all that.

No, you can't. You can't pull a tooth from someone and stick it in the jaw of another without it being obvious as hell what you've done. And it wasn't one tooth. It's a jaw with all of the dental hardware that came with it.
[quote]No way would a megalomaniac like Adolf Hitler commit suicide
It is logical that he would commit suicide. Hitler saw himself as the central figure in a real life grand Wagnerian opera. He believed that his & Germany's fates were inextricably bound, he WAS Germany and vice versa. Both would either emerge from the war in glorious triumph or go down together in a grand blazing spectacle of ashes, ruin, and death. This was his Götterdämmerung. All or nothing, he wouldn't live without Germany and he believed that Germany should not exist without him. Like the possessive psycho ex-husband/boyfriend who doesn't want to live without his wife/girlfriend and doesn't want her to live without him.
He was never going to find the kind of power he’d had in Germany anywhere else. He was on top of the world for a time, where do you go from there? What was there for him to escape to? Hiding out in some South American backwater, fearing for his life? Going from being one of the most powerful people in the world to being a pathetic, powerless nobody? Being confronted every day with his own failures, knowing how close he'd come to having it all? In the end the bitterness of it would have been too much to bear. As it was, he died as the Fuhrer of the Third Reich.
