What are some roles Diahann Carroll could have played?

Let's pretend we could color-blind cast major movies from the 1970s. Which one starring a White actress would have worked just as well with the brilliant Diahann Carroll?

Julia.

by Anonymousreply 1November 19, 2021 9:05 PM

Friday Foster.

by Anonymousreply 2November 19, 2021 9:10 PM

I could see her in a Hart to Hart type TV series.

by Anonymousreply 3November 19, 2021 9:10 PM

I must say she was amazing as Dominique -she could do anything in my book

by Anonymousreply 4November 19, 2021 9:59 PM

Nurse R. She was a very gifted actress capable of far more than fluff.

by Anonymousreply 5November 19, 2021 10:35 PM

She has a pretty but chilly sort of poker face. Not much expression. And she seems formal and prissy, like she wouldn't want to get unpleasant or grungy.

I can see her in a starched white uniform.

by Anonymousreply 6November 19, 2021 10:45 PM

Satan, The Exorcist

by Anonymousreply 7November 19, 2021 10:49 PM

She was a beautiful woman with a splendid voice, but she was not a great actress. She's fine in Claudine, but it's not really a great performance.

by Anonymousreply 8November 19, 2021 10:51 PM

Dawn Davenport, "Female Trouble"

by Anonymousreply 9November 19, 2021 11:00 PM

I can see her in many of those films but she'd have been excellent in Turning Point.

by Anonymousreply 10November 23, 2021 4:26 AM

She was great fun on Dynasty. But I think she could have carried another sitcom, something in the MTM vein.

by Anonymousreply 11November 23, 2021 4:30 AM

Actually, never mind the sitcom, I like R3's Hart to Hart idea.

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2021 4:31 AM

She wasn't particularly funny in her sitcom guest appearances. She was a great beauty but her acting wasn't terribly compelling or distinctive. Stephanie Beacham was so much better as a sparring partner in "Dynasty."

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2021 4:33 AM

It would have been great to have paired her on the Hart to Hart type show with Tim Reid, who was so classy.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2021 4:34 AM

Was Tim fond of locker room play?

I wish she would of played Erica in "An Unmarried Woman" so that we wouldn't have had to see Jill Clayburgh's unsettling tits!

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2021 4:39 AM

I could also see her as a teacher in FAME, maybe if Debbie Allen didn't do the TV series.

Maybe a TV series in the vein of "The Thomas Crown Affair" or "Cover-Up."

I can see her in many roles that Joe Pesci ultimately played.

by Anonymousreply 19November 23, 2021 4:43 AM

She was a starchy nurse and single mom with a son on 'Julia' so I can see her in both Cuckoo's Nest and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

by Anonymousreply 20November 23, 2021 5:05 AM

Are you kidding? Her appeal centred on glamour, even while playing someone who lives on a nurse's salary.

by Anonymousreply 21November 23, 2021 5:12 AM

R21 ever see Claudine where she played a mother of 6 who was on welfare?

by Anonymousreply 22November 23, 2021 5:22 AM

^ and Carroll was nominated for the Oscar for Claudine the year Burstyn won for Alice.

by Anonymousreply 23November 23, 2021 5:23 AM

Carroll's Old Hollywood elocution voice failed to convince as Claudine.

I could see her being good in The Exorcist but again there weren't many huge black movie stars then (which the mother in the film is.)

by Anonymousreply 25November 23, 2021 5:37 AM

[quote] I can see her in many roles that Joe Pesci ultimately played.

Think how great he would have been in the title role on "Julia"!

by Anonymousreply 26November 23, 2021 5:37 AM

The Wiz.

Mahagony.

Lady Sings the Blues.

by Anonymousreply 27November 23, 2021 5:41 AM

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre -- Leatherface

by Anonymousreply 28November 23, 2021 5:46 AM

Diana Sands would have been so much better in Claudine. She was much more earthy than Great Lady Carroll.

Cicely Tyson (at a TCM event) spoke about how she was offered the role in Claudine but turned out down since she didn't want to be seen as that kind of woman.

She mentioned that people said the "girl" who played it got an Oscar nomination but she said she didn't regret missing out on that since she got Miss Jane Pittman later on.

by Anonymousreply 30November 23, 2021 6:00 AM

Diahann Carroll was a bizarre drunk and pain in the ASS for years, and that's why she didn't work more.

Like Debra Winger she cooked her own goose! She just wasn't worth the bother.

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2021 6:12 AM

R30 and yet Tyson appeared in The Concord Airport 79 with Susan Blakely, Martha Raye, Jimmy 'JJ' Walker and Charo!

by Anonymousreply 32November 23, 2021 5:41 PM

There are so many that it's impossible to list just 10, but I'd add Karen Black and Jill Clayburgh.

by Anonymousreply 33November 23, 2021 5:42 PM

She was said to be...fabulous.

"The Devil Wore Prada"

by Anonymousreply 35November 23, 2021 5:51 PM

I can easily see her as Chris beating the motherfucking devil 👿 right out of Regan

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2021 5:51 PM

I can definitely see her in Shirley MacLaine's role in The Turning Point. She'd have been fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 37June 26, 2022 3:20 PM

Mame

by Anonymousreply 38June 26, 2022 3:22 PM

OP, Gelnda jackson's character in A TOUCH OF CLASS wasn't named Tricia. Her name was Vickie Allessio.

by Anonymousreply 39June 26, 2022 3:30 PM

Someone on this site claimed she performed in front an audience in NYC sometimes during the 70s. And when she didn't get the response she wanted she said. "Are you all faggots". Lol. People are so absurd to make up such lies.
