It was clear from the get-go that she wouldn't be happy in this marriage. She clearly didn't want to marry Albert. Their wedding was a farce and I think along the way her mental health suffered greatly.

I assumed/thought she was in SA for mental health treatment. I also thought her emergency hospitalization was for a suicide attempt. "Sinusitis kept her from flying" was the cover story.

I do feel badly for her and the children. She is obviously not well. Obviously undernourished. Mental break/illness. Not am easy row to hoe whether you are a princess or a pauper. I do think Alberta is being frank and honest as much as he can be without admitting he is a lecherous old fart. But he didn't make her have a breakdown altho he probably was not compassionate towards her throughout the marriage.

How do you know he didn’t help her have a breakdown? It’s possible she was predisposed to this. Even so, abuse and neglect can take down even a strong person and in some cases, foster the onset of mental illness which never departs.

How do we know it isn't drug addiction?

Mental health and addiction seem to be among the few possibilities he left on the table.

She knew who she married. And she was over 30 with access to the best therapy and medical advice. Yes, genetics and life pressure/stress can manifest the breakdown but only she with help of professionals can make herself better.

I dunno, they're using the word "intervention." An "intervention" by the family. Is this a drug addiction thing? Those poor little children.

Truth is stranger than fiction, but I just have a hard time imagining how she became this / that openly sobbing bride instead of just walking out of this life, and hailing a plane to an airport.

Thanks, r25. I was going to chime in as well. I hate when people post stuff like that. When you're in love, you think you can change that person, or you overlook/don't see the warning signs. And the partner is also hiding their true nature as well--we are all on our best behavior when we want a relationship to work. It's afterward that things start to fall apart and get worse.

I tend to agree with r7. Albert knew her for, was it, ten years before the marriage and, presumably, she didn't show signs of instability. One would think that a man who is looking for a wife whose primary task is to bear heirs would take note of her mental state and be concerned about genetics and how an unhappy mother would impact children's well being. He could easily have found another mate.

My question is when she started to go off the rails. When did she realize she'd be in a loveless marriage? When she found out about another love child right before the marriage and fled to the Nice airport? I also question how much the pressure to bear heirs and prolonged fertility treatments affected her well being. Then on top of that her isolation.

What is the French media saying? It sounds like serious mental illness. What other issue would have surfaced "in a few hours"? Could be drugs, I suppose, but I think that by now she would be able to handle herself for a few hours when circumstances warrant.

You can't tell in the clothes she's wearing upon arrival in Monaco because they're baggy and drape, but she looked rail thin in the dashiki-like dress she wore departing SA. Disturbingly thin, not Duchess of Cambridge thin. An eating disorder, drug addiction, or a suicide threat/geature are the only things I can think of that would be so readily manifest so quickly. Maybe it was obvious she threw up after a meal or was jonesing and going into withdrawals? Spontaneous acute meltdown? Who knows.

I feel like there have been multiple suicide attempts. Sadly, she will probably succeed at one sooner than later.

He should never have forced the marriage when she tried to flee the country. Now forced to return again and another disaster. The wording of it all was strange and he did not seem to even feign empathy. One or both of the kids might inherit mental instability. He should have thought that "winning" that battle might have a high price in the end.

His sisters have lived pretty unhappy lives with bad relationships, so he probably thinks "well, if they can make it work, why can't you, bitch?" But she didn't grow up in that fishbowl & is likely pretty mentally fragile.

Stephanie led a pretty scandalous life. This is a fun read.
