What was your first car, and who bought it?

Mine was a 1987 Honda Civic that I bought in the late 90s when I got my license. Paid for it with my own savings from summer jobs and birthday money. My parents were solid middle class, but we were on a tight budget and no way were they buying my wheels.

1975 Pontiac Astre (Vega) - a red hatchback with white vinyl bucket seats. Had its issues but it lasted through high school and college. Parental gift.

by Anonymousreply 1November 18, 2021 10:19 PM

A 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. My grandpa’s car, he gave it to me on my 16th bday. I drove it until (literally) one of the wheels fell off.

by Anonymousreply 2November 18, 2021 10:31 PM

An Audi. From my parents.

I loved that car, but it turned out to be very unreliable. When the brakes went out, they got me a reasonably priced sports car, which I loved.

by Anonymousreply 3November 18, 2021 10:32 PM

A 1968 VW Karmann Ghia convertible, light blue. I bought it myself with money I earned working, starting at 13. I could fix it myself with my paperback VW bible, and I dialed my princess phone with a pencil. I felt so glamorous, like Dorothy Malone in Written on the Wind.

I watched my older brother accent a used car from dad and then get it taken away and given back so I worked my ass off bussing tables and doing dishes at 14 and bought 66 mustang myself before I turned 16.

1977 Oldsmobile 98 Regency that I bought with my own savings. It was tacky. It came with two tone paint and wire wheel covers and the interior REEKED of cigarettes but I still liked the car.

MINE was a 1987 Honda Civic I bought in 1987. First re-designed model year, tons of problems with it.

by Anonymousreply 11November 19, 2021 12:45 PM

My parents told me at 15 that I was allowed to have my own car if I paid for it myself (thinking that would be unlikely). I promptly got a job for the summer that I worked 8 am to 8 pm every day, cash under the table due to my age, and bought a ten-year-old Jeep at the end of the summer. It lasted four great years.

by Anonymousreply 12November 19, 2021 12:47 PM

1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale...friends called it 'the Boat' as it was so humungous. I got it from my dad after he got his first Cadillac in 1980.

by Anonymousreply 13November 19, 2021 12:47 PM

1983 Buick La Sabre. Black exterior, burgundy interior. Used to get dressed up, put Al Green in the tape deck, and cruise that big old pussy wagon around town. Drinking and driving, forgiving and forgetting. That’s my motto.

by Anonymousreply 14November 19, 2021 12:57 PM

^^^whoops. Bought it used from a cop.

by Anonymousreply 15November 19, 2021 12:58 PM

A brand new 1974 Super Beetle. Robin eggshell blue. I bought it with money I had saved by delivering the morning and afternoon newspapers, mowing lawns, working at a grocery store. I drove that car for almost 15 years. It had over 300,000 miles on it. My parents were furious for buying it without asking them. I was 18 and that car represented freedom - the first step in getting the fuck out of the small-minded, small town we lived in.

1983 Ford Mustang, red with white vinyl interior, 4-speed standard transmission and a flip-up sunroof with removable panel. I bought it used after getting my first job out of college. (My father said he'd never buy any of his kids a car because we wouldn't appreciate the value of it unless we paid for it ourselves.) The car was a real piece of crap mechanically, but I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 18November 19, 2021 1:12 PM

1967 Oldsmobile Delta 88. VAROOOOM! Inherited from Grandpa since my Grandma never learned how to drive.

Later I purchased a brand new 1974 Honda Civic ($2900) with cash money earned from a job. Smaller imports were becoming the rage due to gas prices and advanced Japanese technology. I did not take care of it but it was still working great 8 years later when I traded it in.

by Anonymousreply 19November 19, 2021 1:16 PM

Jeep Cherokee. Daddy bought it.

1961 battleship gray Chevrolet Biscayne two door sedan, with 0 in options, i.e. no radio, no ps or pb, no a/c, "three on the tree" transmission. I bought it second hand in 1968.

The original window sticker was in the glove box when I got it: $2,105.00 price suggested retail price.

by Anonymousreply 21November 19, 2021 3:23 PM

1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Light Green with Tan Interior. I bought it for $800.

Loved that car, and if I had the money I would buy the same - restored classic - car again.

Ok children. My first car was a 1953 blue Chevy. It was 6 years old. I was just 16.

Also, got my first blow job from some stranger who picked me up walking down the sidewalk looking for cars to buy. Talk about a stupid kid.

In 1972 I bought a 1960 VW Bug for $120. It already had 100,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from had repainted it purple and reupholstered the seats and headliner. I didn't know how to drive a stick shift the day I bought it and needed a friend to drive it home for me. It was the perfect car during my long-haired hippy college days. The car's "heating system" was just air that ran across the engine when it was moving and redirected into the car through a vent under the backseat. But the cable that controlled the heat vent broke so I had heat 365 days a year. I loved that car!

1969 (yes) Buick LeSabre purchased in 1979. My Mom and bought it from our neighbor who owned a garage. He bought older cars, fixed them and sold them. He also had the contract to fix the public school buses. He backed into my car (before I owned it, obviously) with a bus. He fixed it up and had it painted metallic dark forest green. It had vinyl bucket seats that I would use Armor All on about every 2 weeks when I washed the car. If you weren't wearing your seatbelt when I took a curve, you would slide to the other side of car.

There's a picture of my car in my HS yearbook. There is a reflection coming off the right rear corner panel. Like many posters, I sometimes wish I still had that car. I think it may be my 2nd favorite after my2015 Cadillac ATS.

My first car was a used Honda Civic, bought for me by my parents when I turned 16.

I saved my Dad's life on 9/11 and he bought me a new car (I chose a sea-foam green SAAB turbo - what a great car that was).

by Anonymousreply 30November 19, 2021 7:46 PM

R30, not to derail the thread but how did you save your Dad's live on 9/11? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 31November 19, 2021 8:07 PM

1993 Ford Escort. It was a good little car. I drove it for 11 years. It was still in good shape and had less than 100,000 miles on it when I sold it. I put an ad in the paper and I couldn't believe the number of people who called. I sold it to a guy who bought it for his daughter who was going off to college.

He called me a couple weeks later. Unfortunately his daughter hit a deer on her way to college and totaled the car (luckily she was unhurt, just shaken up). His insurance company wanted to speak to me to verify there wasn't anything fraudulent. I remember seeing some of the pictures of the accident and there was clearly deer carcass and fur on the car. I gave the insurance guy hell for wasting my time given the obvious evidence, but I confirmed the car was fine when I sold it so the father could collect on his insurance.

New Opel Corsa in 1997 from my parents. That thing didn’t even have electric windows or AC and zero airbags. It was basic but kind of fun to drive because it was a manual and weighed very little. Cars have gotten safer but they cost too much new these days.

by Anonymousreply 33November 19, 2021 9:19 PM

Renault, Alliance. Brand new. My dad had to cosign the papers as I didn't have any established credit. I made every single payment on my own. Shit car, by the way.

R31 My dad and I had gone from LA to Boston for a family funeral, and we were booked on the 11 AM flight Boston to LA. My dad called up the airline and they had seats on the 8 AM flight and he wanted to switch to that time so he could play golf later that day. I didn't want to get up early and kept refusing to change my ticked. I refused. So we did not end up on the flight that flew into the Towers. And it was quite sad, as we arrived at Logan, went to the American Airlines office and the staff were crying, very distraught. Awful scene.

It was in the 80s. I bought a classic '66 Ford Mustang. Low miles with only one previous owner .. a true, little old lady from Pasadena .. lol. .. I bought it myself. I think it was $1600. I had enough saved for a small down payment and took a 36-month car loan through the credit union that was connected to my job at the time with payments deducted from my biweekly paycheck.

Dammit.

1974 MG midget. Paid for by my parents.

It sounds and looks impressive but it was 1990.

It was a cool convertible and everyone in my high school was jealous (or at least noticed it), but the car had tons of issues and not many mechanics in my town worked on British cars.

It did surprisingly well in the snow, but had vapor lock issues even in the dead of winter, which I will never understand.

Mine was red.

The ones from the 1960's are collectibles but not from the late 60's on, so it wasn't really expensive. Just looked cool.

I took my driver test in my deceased grandmother’s ‘87 Buick Century. She leaked neon green antifreeze and mysteriously accelerated on her own. Had a great suspension though, like a big bouncy mattress. (The car of course, not Granny.)

Used 1976 Ford Granada. It cost $500 and my dad bought it for me so I could get back and forth to my grocery store carryout boy job after I graduated high school. Under the condition I pay them back $50.00/mo.

I saved some money and in about 4 mos. took-off for California in a silly and disastrous attempt to escape Podunk. I limped back broke and jobless. The car got me to CA and back, but soon died.

It would be the first of several attempts to escape the backwoods, but I eventually succeeded.

1987 Buick Regal. Boring ass car, tan exterior, dark brown interior. It didn't even have a tape deck. My dad bought it used and I inherited it when I got my first drivers license in '92.

by Anonymousreply 43November 20, 2021 12:30 AM

My grandmother’s 1979 Pontiac LeMans. Red vinyl interior that faded to purple. Weird emissions issues caused it to shut off at stoplights sometimes. She didn’t drive it much after her eyes started to go, so it sat in a shed with dry rotted tires and mouse nests under the hood. I rescued it in 1996. It took forever to clean up it and get it going and I had a very nervous 8 hour drive back to college.

Oh and the total mileage when I took ownership was 30k. I had it for about 3 years and hated it.

The car seemed so old and outdated at the time. I drive a 2006 Toyota now and it still seems modern.

1975 Vega. I bought it, it was my first car. It broke down as I drove it home from the dealer.

1976 Pontiac Trans Am. That baby had a 455 engine mated to a 4 speed manual transmission. Great car and could burn rubber with very little effort. My father bought it for me.

R35, thank you for answering my question. I'm glad you were stubborn about changing your tickets. You are still here!

1956 Volkwagen bug. Back seat had been ripped out and the entire rear compartment was covered with mis-matched squares of shag carpet. The owner said he had used the car to haul river rocks. The steering wheel was made out of Bakelite. It would get so hot I had to drive it with pot holders. Needless to say, no A/C. I was living in Phoenix at the time, working as a journalist: In and out of that clown car/oven multiple times a day, every day. How I didn't get heat stroke, I will never know.

A Vauxhall Corsa with a 1.7 turbodiesel, not dissimilar from the one in the link. Not the most exciting car in the world, but as an eager 17 year old, it was incredible. My parents bought it, but I had to pay to run it.

A 1971 Buick Skylark. It belonged to my Grandpa and I bought it from him for $100, as it was already almost 10 years old. That thing was an 8-cylinder tank.

Used Mazda 323 which my stepfather bought for my undergrad, which I literally flipped over driving 3 others during spring break. Fortunately, no serious injuries, but brakes were faulty at high speeds. Insurance claim netted Honda Civic.

I live in a pretty affluent neighborhood and I can’t tell you how many teenage kids I see driving brand-new Audis, BMWs, Land Rovers and such. Even if they could have afforded it, my parents would have laughed their heads off at the thought of giving my 16-year-old self a luxury car.

by Anonymousreply 54November 22, 2021 1:19 PM

My first car was a 1975 Mercury Comet that was my father's. It was already beat to hell but I drove it until it died. The first car I bought was a used 1974 Plymouth Satellite that looked exactly like the one in the picture. It had a huge V8 engine. I used to have to practically stand on the brake pedal at a red light or it would have taken off. I loved that car.

I agree, R54. I grew up middle class, but I went to a private school and hung out with kids from affluent families. Back in the 1980s when I was a teenager, most of the middle class kids either didn't have a car at all or had some old beater. When I was 17, I drove my parents' old station wagon for about a month, then my brother borrowed it to take a trip, got in an accident (luckily with no injuries) and the car was trashed enough and old enough where my parents just sold it for parts because it wasn't worth the money to repair it. I was told sorry, but that was the only way I was getting a car--an old one we already paid off. If you want one, get a job they said. I wound up relying on my friends for rides or borrowing one of my parents cars to go out at night.

For the affluent kids, the go-to newer cars were a Ford Escort or a Honda Civic. Or they drove their older siblings' old cars--Honda Accords, Subarus, etc. It was kind of a thing in the affluent families to give their kids a newer car when they went to college and pass on their high school car to their next oldest sibling. I remember one of my friends' brother's bitching that his parents got him a 3 year old Honda Accord to replace his 11 year old Accord that went to his brother/my friend. Boo hoo!

A handful of the affluent kids drove their parents old cars. One of my good friends drove her mom's old BMW. Another drove her father's old Saab. One douchey kid from a very wealthy family drove his father's older Mercedes, but he totaled the car driving drunk one night. He lucked out with only minor injuries. His punishment was to get a Honda Civic, which he bitched about non-stop. Poor thing.

I live in an affluent neighborhood now and I see what you do--kids driving luxury brands--Audi, BMW, Lexus, Land Rover, Infiniti, Acura, etc. And these are not older cars either. Rather, they are maybe 2-3 years old. The affluent kids from my high school years in the 1980s would have only very rarely gotten those types of cars. Where I live now, it seems like it's typical.

by Anonymousreply 56November 22, 2021 2:52 PM

R28 here. I didn't have a LeSabre. I had a '69 Buick Sylark. R52's post reminded me of the correct model.

I went to HS with a kid whose father owned a car dealership. The Dad knew his son was an asshole so he kept giving him used models. The kid wanted a pick-up truck so he kept getting into accidents with the cars until his Dad finally gave in and gave him a slightly used pick up.

One of my neighbors drove a Buick Estate Wagon with fake wood panelling on the sides. Kids laughed at him but it was roomy and could fit a lot of kids. He was one of 5 kids.
