Why do people put skim milk in their coffee?
The amount of extra calories you get vs whole milk or even cream from a splash of milk is pretty negligible.
Are these people drinking six or seven cups of coffee a day, in which case I guess it would add up?
I get oat milk or almond milk if you're cutting out dairy, though I suspect most people just order those to be trendy.

After years of dieting and using skim or 2% in coffee, I'm now on a keto diet (very successfully) and I just adore a splash of half-and-half or even full cream in my morning coffee. Delightful!

It probably has less to do with calories than mouth feel. I use whole milk because half and half makes the coffee seem too “slimy” to me - someone even more sensitive to that than I am would use skim.

People who are committed dieters (not the same as healthy eaters) shave calories when it’s easier to do so. Drinking diet soda and skim milk and eating low-fat cheese is easier for a lot of people than resisting the office candy bowl. But this is one reason why people have trouble keeping the pounds off.

When in college, I used to use whole whipping cream. It was a luscious cup of coffee… After college, I used whole milk for a number of years, mostly I think due to cost. Now, I’m half and half all the way… I also get terrible acid reflux from coffee that doesn’t have enough half and half to cut the acidity.

I can see the diet soda thing R3 - a can of Coke is 160 calories and some people can easily drink two or three a day.
But maybe you save 5 calories by using a splash of skim milk vs whole milk.
So 15 calories if you drink three cup each day, which is way too much coffee for most people.

Starbuck's Italian roast with light cream is rich and delicious, Regular, skim or even half and half don't do it for me and the caloric difference seems negligible.

The milk cuts the bitterness of the coffee. I can't drink Starbucks coffee without some milk as it's far too bitter without it. As far as skim milk vs. cream, maybe some people are trying to reduce their intake of saturated fats rather their intake of calories.

If you drink strong (concentrated) coffee, IMO, skim milk isn't going to do much. I use half 'n' half. Pure heavy cream seems like a good idea, but oil drops rise to the top of the coffee.
Former barista here. Yes, skim and 2% are easier to foam up than milk with higher fat content.

I occasionally drink Starbuck’s breve latte and it is my favorite coffee. Their burnt coffee with creaminess of the half n half is perfect.
I drink skim milk at home because of its lower fat content with helps with my cholesterol numbers and calories and usually has more calcium.
I drink/eat a lot of dairy because I have adult rickets, so it has to be lower in fat.

My father grew up on a farm. The milk he drank was straight from the cow. He started drinking 2% around age 30, and switched to skim milk at around 55. Couldn’t stand anything but skim milk, and drank a lot of it. It wasn’t about calories. It was taste. But, he always drank black coffee.
I drink my coffee black as well, and prefer 1% milk in cappuccino. I will drink whole, but prefer the taste of 1%.

I had a feeling it might R34 -- a lot of DLers are still in the melba toast-cottage cheese-grapefruit-Tab mode of dieting and likely stopped using whole milk during the "fat is bad" trend in the 80s.

And yes R42. That too.

R50 They do, but sadly they all invlude Sucralose, so I've skipped them as an option. Sucralose, better known as Splenda, alters gut microbiome, and I'm not happy about that.
Sucralose is cheaper than sugar, so no surprise really. The ID Coldstone Creamery was nice...not too vanilla heavy, tasted like melted vanilla ice cream. I could only use a gery small amount however, as it is freakishly sweet, even more now with their addition of Sucralose.

For decades the medical profession went on and on about how bad fat was for you. You'd have heart disease! and early heart attack! death!!!
Eat all the crackers and white bread you want but don't you DARE drink any milk other than skim. A friend whose mother was neurotic about this says she never had anything other than skim at home (she was born in 1952).
It really was drilled into people in the 1960s and quite a bit beyond. If you HAD to have some fat occasionally -- always margarine instead of butter, as saturated fat was fucking evil !!
