He’s right.

by Anonymousreply 1November 14, 2021 1:38 AM

He's right. There's nothing special about a superhero movie anymore.

A new superhero movie was something special. It was an event. Now, superhero movies come out every few weeks. Yawn, Nothing special about that at all.

Same thing true of Star Wars movies. They used to be something special, but that ended when a new Star Wars movie started coming out every year.

by Anonymousreply 2November 14, 2021 1:44 AM

Eternals was the only good one

by Anonymousreply 3November 14, 2021 1:45 AM

I don't disagree. I haven't seen one in years.

by Anonymousreply 4November 14, 2021 1:45 AM

And Prometheus was better? That was nothing but a superhero film in different wrapping and it was shit. Much rather watch a Marvel than that dreck.

by Anonymousreply 5November 14, 2021 1:46 AM

I AGREE. They're cartoons.

by Anonymousreply 6November 14, 2021 1:58 AM

They were novel back in the 80s and early 90s. I have some nostalgia for the Batman and Superman films, but they feel much less special now. Part of the fun was seeing how they could accomplish those special effects when there were more limitations. But now that you can create anything with CGI, it's no longer exciting.

by Anonymousreply 7November 14, 2021 2:07 AM

I haven’t seen a superhero movie since the Christian Bale Batman. If a director made a superhero hero film with zero CGI, I’d consider seeing it. I have no desire to go sit in a movie theater and watch what’s basically a video game.

by Anonymousreply 8November 14, 2021 2:16 AM

He'd right. Aside from the original Superman with Reeve, Batman with Keaton and Spiderman with Toby, the rest have been done to death and campy as it was Linda Carter is Woder Woman.

I'm old so get off my lawn.

by Anonymousreply 9November 14, 2021 2:24 AM

I will always cherish the Ridley Scott who made "The Duelists", "Alien" and "Blade Runner."

But Ridley Scott's last good movie was Legend.

And it actually wasn't very good.

He's no Scorsese, and no one to be holding the feet of special-effects-laden action films to the fire. (This is the same twat who made Kingdom of Heaven and Alien: Covenant, for fuck's sake).

Iron Man was a much better film than Prometheus. I'd rather watch Tom Holland as Spiderman than that piece of shit Silence of the Lambs sequel, Hannibal.

I look forward to House of Gucci.

But Scott's output since the mid-80s has been mostly pompous dreck.

by Anonymousreply 10November 14, 2021 2:48 AM

R10 Nothing he has done recently has been terrible, but it hasn't been great either. Prometheus was the most disappointing as that could have been epic had the storytelling matched the visuals.

by Anonymousreply 11November 14, 2021 2:55 AM

He's right.

by Anonymousreply 12November 14, 2021 2:56 AM

OMG billion dollar movies from Hollywood are made to appeal to the masses and make money?! And an old has been is pissed that the soulless devils on LA no longer value the mediocre Alien franchise he still makes decades later that relies on special effects and Michael Fasbender?

Truly. Shocked.

by Anonymousreply 13November 14, 2021 3:15 AM

I saw a trailer for the upcoming The Batman and I asked myself do I want to slog through two hours of frowns, shadows, unnerving music and downbeat story lines. Each movie tries to outdo the gloominess of the one before.

by Anonymousreply 14November 14, 2021 3:47 AM

Ridley Scott stopped Ben Affleck and Matt Damon from kissing in his latest movie saying that it was "too distracting" and it flopped at the box office. He's a homophobic old fart left over from another era.

by Anonymousreply 15November 14, 2021 4:00 AM

He tells no lies

by Anonymousreply 16November 14, 2021 4:01 AM

Ridley Scott would give anything to have a very successful super hero movie but it's beyond his reach now that he has gotten older and out of touch.

by Anonymousreply 17November 14, 2021 4:06 AM

I agree 100% with him and R2.

by Anonymousreply 18November 14, 2021 4:13 AM

Haven’t seen it but isn’t that the basis for Glass and Logan? Not that I’ve seen either

by Anonymousreply 19November 14, 2021 7:06 AM

Studios need to take chances again.. the idiot masses need to stop paying for superhero shit.

by Anonymousreply 20November 14, 2021 7:20 AM

When did Ridley Scott make a good movie?

Black Panther was a better movie than either Black Hawk Down or Black Rain.

Thor: Ragnorak was better than Gladiator

The Captain America movies were better than Prometheus and The Covenant

Ant Man was better than that film he did where Cameron Diaz spreads her legs on Michael Fassbender's car windscreen and makes shapes with her vagina.

Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle?

by Anonymousreply 22November 14, 2021 7:43 AM

[quote]When did Ridley Scott make a good movie?

That should be "When did Ridley Scott LAST make a good movie?"

I saw every one of his movies in the cinema released over the last 20 years. There were some that were very well done. I remember Kingdom Of Heaven being better than the critics suggested.

Who has positive things tp say about his version of Robin Hood? Or Body Of Lies? Was that the one The Counsellor? Exodus: Gods & Kings? The recent one with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Villanelle? No thanks.

The Martian did well at the box office and at award ceremonies but some of the Marvel movies have been better.

by Anonymousreply 23November 14, 2021 7:45 AM

R21 Except everything you just said is false.

by Anonymousreply 24November 14, 2021 7:55 AM

R8 Joker?

by Anonymousreply 25November 14, 2021 7:56 AM

[quote] Thor: Ragnorak was better than Gladiator

No.

by Anonymousreply 26November 14, 2021 8:00 AM

Yeah I agree. I think the main problem with superhero movies isn't that they're childish, they're boring.

by Anonymousreply 27November 14, 2021 8:02 AM

Whether or not Scott is a flawless director who's never made a bad film is irrelevant. Many people who've never made a film at all agree that the superhero movies are deadening, soulless exercises in CGI that leave us utterly cold. His opinion isn't negated by other people's criticisms of his body of work.

by Anonymousreply 28November 14, 2021 10:23 AM

He's definitely right. Superhero movies are shit and garbage. They're pathetic cash grabs.

by Anonymousreply 29November 14, 2021 10:45 AM

That's why I don't take any of the actors that appeared in action hero movies, seriously. Which is about 80% of Hollywood A and B list actors.

by Anonymousreply 30November 14, 2021 10:59 AM

Regardless of whether he's made any good films lately, he's still right about the superhero movies. They're like a mediocre production line.

by Anonymousreply 31November 14, 2021 7:24 PM

They'll stop making them when they stop making money.

by Anonymousreply 32November 14, 2021 7:30 PM

Someone put in Thor once when I was visiting somewhere and I thought it was so boring I actually got up and went to bed. Same with some Spiderman 29th remake with Michael Keaton as a villain. Zzzzzz.....

by Anonymousreply 33November 14, 2021 7:33 PM

People should have to show their ages on their posts. These superhero movies aren't meant to appeal to those who think Follies is the high point of American culture.

by Anonymousreply 34November 14, 2021 7:33 PM

I see no lies. I’m fucking sick of this product line.

by Anonymousreply 35November 14, 2021 7:34 PM

He’s right but he has no room to talk. I’d rather watch a crappy super hero movie than watch any of his recent movies.

by Anonymousreply 36November 14, 2021 7:51 PM

[quote]I’d rather watch a crappy super hero movie than watch any of his recent movies.

I'd rather watch neither

by Anonymousreply 37November 14, 2021 11:37 PM

I'm with r37, I don't watch either shitty Ridley Scott movies or shitty superhero comic book movies.

My brother put one of the Star Treck movies years ago, the one with Chris Pine just taking over Captain Kirk. It was okay, the kids enjoyed it. I'm just not that interested in any of these comic book movies. I've never been interested in them.

The difference is that Ridley Scott has made some good movies in his time.
