What the Golden Girls would look like at the same ages but in 2021

Someone made this, saying that if the women were the same age but in 2021 this is what they would look like with all the makeup and plastic surgery women get now.

Thoughts?

It's probably accurate. Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, and Madonna are the same age that Betty and Bea were around the time GG started.

by Anonymousreply 25November 14, 2021 12:01 AM

I remember reading an account from Meredith Baxter Birney who worked on some movie with same age peers. At some point, the director took her aside and said that they had to use a ton of filters because she look so much older and the plot was about similar aged friends. He advised surgery to keep her career going. Don't know if she took the advice. But but it really illustrates the pressure women are under even if they don't want procedures.

by Anonymousreply 27November 14, 2021 3:54 AM

Here's what's happening

People on Twitter are "Yasifying" or "Yasssifying" photos.

Basically they use a program called FaceApp to throw makeup on people. The program uses AI to make it look semi realistic.

There are TONS of them.

They look freaky! And Blanche never would of let the other girls be her roommates since she wanted to be the prettiest.

by Anonymousreply 30November 14, 2021 4:12 AM

This is brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 31November 14, 2021 4:15 AM

I know the series isn't known for being particularly realistic or consistent, but the only one who could afford that level of upkeep, would be Blanche. We know Dorothy "had her eyes done". But it would require far more than that to resemble anything in the linked photo.

by Anonymousreply 32November 14, 2021 4:15 AM

Jamie Lee Curtis, Annette Bening, and Emma Thompson are around the age of Bea/Betty when the series started. For their age, they've had some of the least amount of work done as far as Hollywood actresses go (compared to say Michelle Pfeiffer, Geena Davis, Holly Hunter, etc). When you start to leave the actresses born in the 1950s and get into the 1960s, you start to see the incidence of plastic surgery accelerate.

I prefer how Curtis, Bening, and Thompson look.

by Anonymousreply 33November 14, 2021 4:17 AM

Have you guys seen the fb posts of connie francis? She’s like a real life golden girl. She’s retired and reside in Florida were she hangs out with her gals pals at lefty’s grill and go home to play scrabble.

by Anonymousreply 34November 14, 2021 4:20 AM

Reminds me of Lucille Ball in her 1968-74 “Here’s Lucy” TV show. Compared to the way that other actresses of Lucy’s then age would look and dress now, Lucy would’ve seemed 100-years-old.

How old were the characters supposed to have been on the show? 50s? 60s?

by Anonymousreply 44November 14, 2021 10:32 AM

Bea's cock isn't big enough.

by Anonymousreply 45November 14, 2021 10:33 AM

If they redid the show today they would have to have older women than the actresses on the original show. People in their mid 50s today aren't considered in their "golden years" anymore. I was thinking about how in "Only Murders in the Building," where Steve Martin's and Martin Short's characters both came across as early 60s but were mentioned multiple times as being mid-70s, which they are, but neither seem as old as an actor their age back in the 1980s would have. Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche in Trading Places, for example, neither were particularly feeble, but they were the same age Martin Short and Steve Martin are now and looked and acted 20 years older than they do.

by Anonymousreply 46November 14, 2021 10:44 AM

R44,

Actress and Character Ages When Series Started: Rue McClanahan 51 / "53" Estelle Getty 62 / "80" (according to Wiki) or "80-something" Bea Arthur 63 / "53" Betty White 63 / "55"

Weird. That would mean actresses today like Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts.

I think if we got actresses today who came across the age they did back in the mid-1980s, it would be actresses like Lily Tomlin (82), Jane Fonda (83), Helen Mirren (76).

It’s why Sunset Boulevard makes more sense these days with 70-something Glenn Close.

A struggling writer in his late 20s/early 30s wouldn’t gag at the thought of having to fuck a modern 50-something like, say, Naomi Watts, Halle Berry or Jennifer Aniston.

by Anonymousreply 54November 14, 2021 12:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 56November 14, 2021 12:56 PM

The casting on GG was so strange. Rue McClanahan as a sex pot? She was hideously ugly and had the worst hairstyles. A 4'10" Italian woman having a 6 foot tall daughter? Betty White should have played Blanche. She was the only attractive one in the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 57November 14, 2021 1:08 PM

Estelle Getty looks cute in glasses.

by Anonymousreply 59November 14, 2021 1:14 PM

Blanche would go all the way and get everything done, including vagina rejuvenation, Rose would get it done at Blanche's insistence but only after Blanche had it done, Sophia would have it done then not follow through with the upkeep, and Dorothy would have nothing done and think the rest of them look ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 67November 14, 2021 2:49 PM

r67 is Cooper, Joan Rivers' grandson and Melissa's son

by Anonymousreply 68November 14, 2021 2:52 PM

r46 it's amazing how much "older" people were back then. Think about Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball and Bette Davis in the 1980s. They were all in their 70s but they seemed absolutely ancient, like they were 100. Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, Bette Midler and Robert Deniro are all well into their 70s now and are much more youthful.

by Anonymousreply 69November 14, 2021 2:59 PM

In the early stages, media favored and promoted conservative maturity. Then in the 70s and 80s came the struggle between favoring easy impressionable youth vs. mature and wise adulthood, and starting from the 90s trend obsessed and money spending youth became the main target demographic for advertising and programming.

by Anonymousreply 70November 14, 2021 3:13 PM

The characters (with the exception of Sophia) would all be in their early 90's today. So that is some damn good cosmetic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 71November 14, 2021 3:15 PM

It's ultimately about commerce.

Women used to age out of Hollywood. They were either slowly pushed into fewer and worse roles or else they "gracefully" disappeared and became legendary beauties.

The surgeries don't make them look young, but they keep them from looking elderly, and so older women like Nicole Kidman still get major roles. She can still strip down and impress people with her naked body, which conveys youth, as she did in Nine Perfect Strangers, even with a strangely disfigured appearance.

Joan Rivers explained this. She knew she didn't look normal or young. It didn't matter. What mattered was that she didn't look like an old lady, because no one would pay money to watch a wrinkled little old lady make fun of people's clothes and hairstyles.

by Anonymousreply 72November 14, 2021 3:18 PM

It's a racket, marketing genius. You have to keep going back, every 3 months, paying out year after year. Women don't care what men think looks good anymore, it's a marker of wealth, a trophy like an Hermes Birkin, that other women can identify as "beautiful and successful, expensive."

by Anonymousreply 73November 14, 2021 3:23 PM

r72 nailed it on the head, the object is to not look old, and Joan Rivers is prime example. Rivers looked strange but she didn't look like a little old lady. Bette Davis looked like a wrinkled prune before her stroke and I think of her as a little old lady. I never think of Rivers as a little old lady. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 74November 14, 2021 3:24 PM

Yes, Joy Behar is 79 years old. If she had aged naturally, her kvetching would come across very differently on TV. Instead of being a feisty redhead, she'd be a cranky old Italian former English teacher.

But even without work done, women are looking younger. My mother at 65 does not look nearly as old as her mother did at 65. Granted hair, cosmetics, skincare has come a long way in that time.

by Anonymousreply 79November 14, 2021 3:47 PM

When Gloria Swanson did Sunset it was her comeback, she was considered old and had it at 50! Apparently she had a lot of work done (as much as could be done in 1950) and looked great.

by Anonymousreply 80November 14, 2021 3:49 PM

Fonda doesn't look as strange as Joan Rivers did, albeit she had a better canvas to work on to start with. Fonda has had a lot of work obviously and spends a lot of time and money on herself but I also imagine it's a lot of smoke and mirrors, but I don;t consider her an old lady either, and she is.

by Anonymousreply 81November 14, 2021 3:52 PM

It's about the push to look younger and appeal to younger demographics. Looking younger = (commercial) success,

Back in the old days, looking mature and looking wise was considered a desirable virtue. Even young people were pushed to look older, mature and more sophisticated.

by Anonymousreply 82November 14, 2021 3:52 PM

R80 But also lifespans were shorter then, people had children at younger ages then and by 50 many more were grandparents, etc. The whole mindset has changed. Many people do appear younger at that age now if they can afford and care to keep up appearances, but they're also more vital from better nutrition and medical care and that counts for a lot.

by Anonymousreply 83November 14, 2021 3:53 PM

I wonder if I’ll have grandkids when I’m 50?

by Anonymousreply 84November 14, 2021 3:55 PM

Cosmetic injection and surgery are indicators of two things--a certain level of affluence and a need to appear younger for romantic or business reasons. If women choose to do it, fine. It's also fine if they don't. Just don't deny you've had major injections by bragging you've never had surgery or write stupid NYT essays complaining that you're now invisible when you walk into a room when previously every man's head would turn. Don't expect a medal for not doing anything to your face. Please don't announce "it's time to break the silence on menopause" when there's been a huge cottage industry of books, supplements, exercises and prescription medication for decades now. And everyone on DL reserves the right to comment on how bad or good you look. That's what pointless gossip is all about.

by Anonymousreply 85November 14, 2021 4:36 PM

P.S. Please don't tell us how great your sex life is at 80, ladies. Don't make movies like and including "Book Club" about older women discovering their sexuality. Don't try to sell us on Candace Bergen and Diane Keaton being old, sexless frumps when they got more cock as young women in a year than most people see in a lifetime.

r92 Mother says the doctor is here to give you your weekly enema. Get off the computer and get prepped.

by Anonymousreply 93November 15, 2021 7:43 PM

R57 That was the point of the casting. White had played sly and kittenish Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rue had played Vivian Cavender on Maude…not nearly as dopey as Rose but equally sincere. They both wanted to play against type.

by Anonymousreply 94November 16, 2021 2:44 AM

R94 Or the casting director/producer wanted them to, anyway. Both have said that they auditioned for the more obvious opposite roles and were told to read for the roles they ended up with just to see what would happen.

Rue also said that after she got the part, she studied a Georgia accent to sound authentic and then at the rehearsal the director kept telling her to go more and more extreme with it, so she invented a crazy musical drawl that isn't anything like a real accent and the director thought it was hilarious and told her to use it.

by Anonymousreply 95November 16, 2021 10:03 AM

[quote]But also lifespans were shorter then, people had children at younger ages then and by 50 many more were grandparents, etc. The whole mindset has changed. Many people do appear younger at that age now if they can afford and care to keep up appearances, but they're also more vital from better nutrition and medical care and that counts for a lot.

And it's speeding up. For example, Adrienne Barbeau (76), still vital and seemingly "youthful" is now the same age that Rue McClanahan was when she passed away just over eleven years ago. Of course genetics is one of the major individual factors in ageing.

by Anonymousreply 99November 16, 2021 11:31 AM

Truthfully, everyone looked like shit in the 1970s. Everyone looked anywhere from 20 to 50 years older. Smoking and drinking were a huge part of it. Add spending 12 hrs a day in the sun w/out sunscreen. Yikes!

by Anonymousreply 100November 16, 2021 11:35 AM

R100 Not only without sunscreen, but in the 60s (and 70s?) my mom used to sunbathe with baby oil and iodine, which was a common thing at the time.

by Anonymousreply 101November 16, 2021 11:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 103November 16, 2021 11:51 AM

I have wondered if I have a personality disorder because I am overly sensitive and haven't had many romantic relationships (which is honestly fine with me).

Someone here told me I probably have borderline personality disorder because of a reply I wrote, and I got curious and took an online quiz that suggested it's possible.

So I asked my therapist, a psychiatrist I've seen for over a decade for anxiety management. She laughed SO hard and said "You are not borderline. Not AT ALL! Oh my God! If you had a borderline personality, there is NO way I would have seen you for so long. I LIKE you. You don't like people with borderline personalities once you know them!"

Except that SUNSET BOULEVARD takes place in 1949-1950, so it makes sense for that time period. It didn't quite make sense with Gloria Swanson in the part. Her portrayal was great, but since she always ate right and took good care of her skin and self in general, she looked too youthful to be a mid-20th century fiftysomething.

My parents, aunts and uncles are all in their 70s now and they're going to the gym, going on hikes through the woods, etc. They are so much more youthful than the previous generation.

by Anonymousreply 112November 17, 2021 5:26 AM

R112 The two big differences are the extremity of the surgery and the newer freaky injectables.

In the 80s, women had facelifts and maybe a nose job and *maybe* the older women had breast implants or lifts.

Today, the standards are mid-facelifts plus Botox plus fillers plus big marshmallow-white dental veneers plus injected lips plus hair extensions and false eyelashes, often plus nose jobs, chin and cheek implants and often boob jobs and sometimes even ass implants. They're utterly unnatural.

[quote] Except that SUNSET BOULEVARD takes place in 1949-1950, so it makes sense for that time period. It didn't quite make sense with Gloria Swanson in the part. Her portrayal was great, but since she always ate right and took good care of her skin and self in general, she looked too youthful to be a mid-20th century fiftysomething

I disagree. She had a facelift and had a great figure, but she looked life a fifty-something with a great figure.

Wilder wanted Norma to be disgusting and fat and vulgar but Swanson convinced him she would be look after herself to excess due to vanity.

Remember when Blanche attended her reunion and was devastated that so many women looked so youthful? Did they look like OP's pic?
