Bob's Burgers - A charming, gay-friendly cartoon

This show is pretty damn gay, despite never being heavy-handed with a social message. The mom is the ideal hot-mess fag hag, and she's voiced by a gay man. The dad is frequently bi-curious and has a lot of gay/transvestite friends. The son is obsessed with attention and musical theater, and the daughter's crush is a slow-dancer with a butt that won't quit.

It never has a moral about acceptance or sexuality, but it has lots of cute and simple little jokes that artfully touch on both the absurdly ribald and the oddly wholesome.

by Anonymousreply 110November 17, 2021 12:47 PM

Jimmy Jr. and Zeke are a couple.

by Anonymousreply 1November 13, 2021 3:01 PM

Do not like the way this cartoon is drawn. Won't watch because of this major distraction.

by Anonymousreply 2November 13, 2021 3:03 PM

I love Aunt Gayle (Megan Mullally), fancy Mr. Fischoeder (Kevin Kline), fussy femme knitter Mr. Frond, the grandparents who live on a swinger's resort, and the cute old couple ("Saggy and Sophisticated") who run the art store.

by Anonymousreply 3November 13, 2021 3:03 PM

I love the old guy Harold who calls Bob "Chubs."

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2021 3:06 PM

There are a million things wrong w this fucking show. One man does every voice, inc females. The animation is horrible and unprofessional. Family Guy has been horrible for years but Bob's Burgers is a million times worse. I cannot imagine how ugly and stupid you'd have to be to watch this garbage.

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2021 3:07 PM

It's such a fun show

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 6November 13, 2021 3:07 PM

R5 is a drunken, smelly twat.

The main cast is six people - one for each Belcher plus Teddy the Handyman - and the supporting cast is another ten recurring actors. A few people will sometimes voice a second character, and sometimes the actor is male, but that's far from saying "One man does every voice."

And as far as "unprofessional" animation: The show's been in a primetime slot for over a decade, and minted millions for its creators, looking just the way it does. It has fans, a huge media presence, and a profitable machine of merchandising and syndication rights. It meets the very definition of the word "professional," and it's more than someone like you will ever churn out.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2021 3:41 PM

We had a Bob's Burgers thread a while back that had someone who absolutely insisted the animation on it was so awful it was embarrassing, that he worked in television animation and he knew for a fact that the show was garbage, and I always thought it was odd that we never saw this guy who worked in animation ever mention that he worked in television animation ever again.

by Anonymousreply 8November 13, 2021 3:44 PM

R7 Bullshit. It is one man who does every voice, stupid cunt. It is a million times worse than Family Guy, I'll repeat. Truly brain dead fuckheads watch this garbage.

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2021 3:45 PM

R9 This information is easily disproven using hundreds of websites, news articles, interviews, and the show's own production credits.

Quit drinking your breakfast, already. You're a fucking mess, and the only reason you haven't had an intervention is because you don't have enough friends to make a little circle around you on a Saturday afternoon.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2021 3:47 PM

R10 The fact you love this unfunny, badly drawn turd of a show says all we need to know about you, stupid cunt.

by Anonymousreply 11November 13, 2021 3:49 PM

We only have two kinds of trolls, the rightwingers and the people who lie about stuff to get attention. I'll leave it to the reader to decide which kind r9 is.

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2021 4:06 PM

It's a quirky fun show. Tina is my favorite. Also, several characters are voiced by out gay actor John Roberts. I like to support that.

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2021 5:00 PM

So as to prove r9 wrong, although in his inebriated state he won;t even notice:

This is the cast for Bob's Burgers on imdb. Oh look: every major character is voiced by someone different and not just "one man," just as r7 said but r9 denied.

There was an episode where Bob had to keep going to the grocery store to buy turkeys and the butcher there thought he was coming on to him. The flirtation between the two of them (which Bob surprisingly considered) had me in hysterics.

by Anonymousreply 15November 13, 2021 5:19 PM

I've rarely identified with a cartoon character as much as I identify with Tina. I look and act and sound nothing like her, but there's an internal Tina within me.

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2021 5:20 PM

Let your internal Tina moan r16! Let her moan.

by Anonymousreply 17November 13, 2021 5:23 PM

Oh god I remember that, r15. At one point Bob blurts out he's not good enough for the butcher and as he runs out of the store says, "I'll call you!"

by Anonymousreply 18November 13, 2021 5:24 PM

We all have that one friend who's into Sloppy Bears.

by Anonymousreply 19November 13, 2021 5:27 PM

It's ugly, with bad voice work and a constant self-congratulatory vibe, despite its forays into some camp humor.

by Anonymousreply 20November 13, 2021 5:30 PM

I LOVE THIS SHOW....it is my feel good show when I just need to escape. One of my favorites - love adult cartoon.

Simpsons jumped the shark a long time ago but this one live on!

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2021 5:30 PM

Bob's Burgers is a gentle show. It's sweet seeing a supportive family making the best of low income life.

I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone, but I enjoy it and find it to be highly rewatchable.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2021 6:44 PM

I haven’t watched in a long time but I always enjoyed it when I did. Loved the always changing visual jokes in the opening credits and the burger pun specials on the chalkboard behind the counter.

R25 He keeps needing the turkeys because every morning he wakes up and finds the turkey from the day before. One winds up in a litter box.

There is a point to all of that, but there is a reason.

They do great Thanksgiving episodes. I think that Dawn of the Peck is my favorite. It has Bob listening to Donna Summer, a Jurassic Park bit, poultry gone will, tiny bottle of water, and Regular Sized Rudy.

Omg if I was an animator working on this show, I'd kill myself. The design is HORRIBLE and an affront to the senses. But then, so much prime-time, adult animation (barring "The Simpsons" is) Seems about as much fun as drawing...Wizard of Id everyday. Want some REAL cartoons? Go watch Tex Avery stuff from the '40s, or Ren and Stimpy from the '90s. Get some TASTE for chrissake, OP. Jesus...

by Anonymousreply 42November 14, 2021 4:48 AM

Of the secondary characters, Tammy is my favorite.

"What are you saying? Spo-onge?"

by Anonymousreply 43November 14, 2021 12:19 PM

My favorite episode is “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl!”. Tina as Sigourney Weaver and the Carly Simon cameo at the end are just perfect.

by Anonymousreply 44November 14, 2021 12:29 PM

Tammy is a much better character now than in the beginning, she was beyond insufferable during the bas mitzvah episode. I know she was supposed to be but it wasn't that enjoyable to watch sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 45November 14, 2021 12:32 PM

My favorite episode is when Bob drives a taxi to pay for Tina's birthday party. The best line is a throwaway:

Bob: "I think I might be a pimp."

Louise: " You're gonna need a bigger hat."

by Anonymousreply 46November 14, 2021 12:34 PM

I love the show, but I have to admit it has more of an edge at the beginning and turned into a nice feelgood comedy now.

Love Topsy. Mr. Ambrose, whispering: Books are stupid!

The show has some great original songs. Like Electric Light from Topsy.

My most favorite? Probably the mock trial where Louise has to defend her arch nemesis Mr. Frond.

Billy Eichner's Mr. Ambrose is my favorite guest character.

Eat, Spray, Linda is one of my favorite episodes, which introduces the vile character Deirdre, voiced by Drew Droege.

One thing I love about Bob's Burgers is how nasty the townspeople are, even when the Belchers are nice to them.

Bob throws a big party for them during the hurricane that almost cancels Lobsterfest, and are they grateful? Of course not. They trash his restaurant, boo him at Lobsterfest, and his "best friend" Teddy suggests that they make trashing Bob's restaurant an annual tradition.

Bob drives Edith around town as she steals quilt pieces, and insults Bob constantly, yet he still defends her in the end.

As Linda is trying to get home, and Deirdre chases her through the sidewalk art festival, Linda runs around all of the chalk art, while Deirdre barrels right through, destroying other people's artwork.

by Anonymousreply 50November 14, 2021 2:45 PM

Linda sounds exactly like Miss Coco Peru. (Or vice versa.)

by Anonymousreply 51November 14, 2021 4:04 PM

Does she? IMO Coco has a much lower vocal range. Linda is more on the shrill side.

by Anonymousreply 52November 14, 2021 4:09 PM

I don't think of any similarity between Miss Coco Peru's and Linda's way of talking other than that they both have strong outer-borough accents.

by Anonymousreply 53November 14, 2021 4:11 PM

Loved the one where they make friends with the hipster couple (I only remember random details --Linda was excited to be at a loft party and Bob was apprehensive and there was some sort of ice storm and Tina was babysitting)

I love Linda's voice too. My husband is from New Jersey and there are older Jewish and Italian women there who sound just like her.

I love the animation! It looks so simple and then you realize it's actually really detailed. Gutters, shutters, railings, dryer vents, etc etc decorate the buildings. The cars look like a 12 year old drew them until you look closer. They chew food realistically and the different weather creates different moods. Last week did crappy chilly overcast day at the beach so well. Then there are the ones that show the day going from beautful, sun came out after a rain, to magic hour to sunset to night. The sky is always doing something interesting. They capture "sun dappled" when they go into the woods. I think the lone "animator" is fucking jealous.

by Anonymousreply 71November 14, 2021 6:48 PM

One of the writers said that one of the keys of the show is that though life is tough for the Belchers they should always get a little win before the end of each episode. I think that's why I hate the magicians episode because the magician outsmarts Bob in the end.

Louise losing her ears to Logan ([from another ep] "Logan Barry Bush?" "We didn't think it through!") is a classic.

by Anonymousreply 72November 14, 2021 8:09 PM

Fuck. Yeah! That scene was hilarious, R70.

Love Gary Cole on BB, well, really anything he’s in, but he kills it on BB.

They must be laughing their asses off between takes.

Not sure how that clip relates to R64, though. Jay’s not in that scene, I don’t think.

Isn’t that Bill Hader as Mickey?

I hope Jay wasn’t part of Jan. 6 - loved him on Bob & Dave.

Over 12 seasons and this show has not jumped the shark (the way the Simpsons did) They have a clunker episode here and there but still a damn impressive run for this show so far.

by Anonymousreply 86November 15, 2021 2:09 AM

R84 I find the earlier episodes hard to watch. The show creators were trying way too hard to be edgy then (the food truck episode is a perfect example) Around the first Halloween episode this show got into a groove and is getting better with age.

by Anonymousreply 87November 15, 2021 3:11 AM

Oh nooooo, R80, you were right.

So bummed about Jay.

I’m hoping it comes out that he was in the thick of it ironically, filming and interviewing Q-tards to see what made them tick, but alas…

And it was good, R83 - at least all the loft stuff - felt like classic Louise was back. I laughed out loud several times.

Gene is best in small doses, R84 - great actually. He thinks quickly, outside the box, no shame about how much he loves his mom, bucks gender norms, etc.

But Gene-centered storylines are a bit much.

I like him though.

I’m pretty sure I put people off when I was his age.

But look how great I turned out!

I was surprised that they recast Mickey last week, but I get that Bill Hader's schedule is probably crazy these days.

I hope they recast Jimmy Pesto now. It's one thing to have a Trump voter in the cast, it's quite another to have a full-fledged criminal whacko. They can't keep him onboard.

by Anonymousreply 91November 15, 2021 7:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 92November 15, 2021 7:35 PM

“Boys For Now” made me crack up pretty hard.

by Anonymousreply 93November 15, 2021 8:36 PM

It is, R90. Just about anything you can imagine is a real fetish. A few years ago a friend and I spent a few hours trying to come up with outlandish fetishes that weren't real. We would think of something and then Google it. Everything we searched for was real.

Vomit, eyeball licking, children's toys, moles, jizz in the ear canal, you name it.

by Anonymousreply 94November 15, 2021 9:52 PM

[quote]you name it.

I'd rather not.

by Anonymousreply 95November 15, 2021 9:54 PM

I loved the show from Seasons 1-5 but it has lost some of the sharp humor. I miss the early (sometimes evil) mastermind version of Louise. The Florida swingers episode that the clip from R90 is from is my favorite. I still laugh out loud every time I see this scene:

by Anonymousreply 97November 15, 2021 10:29 PM

Another reason mastermind Louise was so fun was her nemeses. Logan is the best but also great was her borderline-hate obsession with Boo Boo, and the obsessed Millie. And the episode where Henry manipulates Louise's obsession with Millie's obsession to win the class election was pure genius.

For some reason, probably because I didn't want to watch an animated series, I overlooked this show until several months ago when a friend specified a specific episode. I reluctantly watched it, and now, whenever I'm stumped as to what I might want to watch at night, or, more likely, nothing to watch, I'll listen to a random episode and I almost always get some yucks.
