Sarah Silverman Says She Had A ‘Bad Experience’ With Michael Richards On The Set Of ‘Seinfeld’

It wasn’t a good experience, as she recently revealed on The Sarah Silverman Podcast. “I auditioned and I got the part, and oh my God, here I am with Kramer, and I have a scene with Michael Richards, in bed.”

“So I’m nervous, and jacked up,” Silverman continues. “But you know, I’m still a pro.” She recounts the scene in which Michael Richards says his line, “What’s that noise?” and Silverman is supposed to respond, “It’s probably the wind.” Instead, she accidentally says, “It’s probably the rain.”

“This guy, Michael Richards, breaks character and just starts ripping me a new asshole. He points to the window and he goes, ‘Do you see rain in that window?! Do you see rain in that window!?’ and I go, ‘No,’ and he says, ‘Then why did you say rain?’ It’s not rain. There’s no rain in that window! The line is ‘wind’!”

Silverman was shocked by the moment. She said she had a “lump in her throat,” and just had to get through it. She processed it overnight, however, and thought, “F**k this guy. Nobody calls him on his sh*t because he’s Kramer from Seinfeld. He walks through the front door and he gets a standing ovation.”

The next day, Silverman returned to set, and she had a scene with Richards in the diner. They’re both sitting at the table, and while they are setting up the shot, Richards starts casually talking to Silverman about real estate and other small-talk matters, as though nothing happened.

“And finally, I just cut him off and I say, ‘I don’t give a f**k!’ And he’s kind of stunned, and it’s like he snapped out of it a little. He understand what I was saying was, ‘You don’t talk like that and act like nothing happened. I’m not going to be one of those people that joins in and acts like nothing happened. That was sh*tty behavior.'”

Boy, she really wants her piece of cancel culture, doesn’t she?

by Anonymousreply 1November 13, 2021 2:39 PM

Oh dear. So brave. So strong. Poor thing to have gone through something so traumatic. I hope there was a fainting couch near by .

by Anonymousreply 2November 13, 2021 2:40 PM

At least he didn't call her the N-word. She's also really dating herself by reminding everyone she guest starred on 'Seinfeld' in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 3November 13, 2021 2:41 PM

She wasn’t professional. She wasn’t prepared. One short line and unable to utter it correctly.

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2021 2:41 PM

Maybe 2023 will be the year everyone stops with their victim stories?

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2021 2:42 PM

This from somebody who dated Jimmy Kimmel

by Anonymousreply 6November 13, 2021 2:44 PM

You still should have said "wind", bitch.

He was right. There was no rain.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2021 2:45 PM

Richards was a racist jerk and an asshole to everyone. THREAD CLOSED

by Anonymousreply 8November 13, 2021 2:46 PM

If he'd corrected her, fine, but the over-the-top screaming about it was unprofessional.

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2021 2:47 PM

R1 She's a tad bit late...he's been canceled for many years now.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2021 2:47 PM

I'm with R9. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 11November 13, 2021 2:50 PM

She has a podcast, it's not like she called a press conference.

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2021 2:50 PM

I have no skin in this.

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2021 2:51 PM

I trust JLD, JA and JS as judge of characters more than this extra bitch.

by Anonymousreply 14November 13, 2021 2:53 PM

If more people stood on principle or called out assholes the world might actually be a moderately more pleasant place to live. I say good for her.

by Anonymousreply 15November 13, 2021 2:53 PM

Any time a female celebrity says something, the whole thread is "She's an attention-getting liar who's just saying this to ruin a man who did nothing wrong, she deserved every awful thing that happened."

It's boring.

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2021 2:54 PM

Did the Seinfeld set have a Safe Space?

by Anonymousreply 17November 13, 2021 2:55 PM

[quote]I’m still a pro.

No, you were not. You did not know your lines. That wastes everyone's time.

by Anonymousreply 18November 13, 2021 2:55 PM

Kramer was the most overrated character on the show. I am not sure how he kept winning the Emmy over Jason Alexander.

by Anonymousreply 19November 13, 2021 2:56 PM

r19 I guess because Alexander's character was so obnoxious (even more than the others, who all won Emmys).

by Anonymousreply 20November 13, 2021 2:59 PM

Have you ever watched the Seinfeld blooper clips on YouTube? When one of his cast mates make a mistake, the other cast members laugh, while he looks PISSED. He seems uptight with no sense of humor (which is apparently a reality for many comedians off stage).

I'm glad she's talking about what happened. For several years, I worked with a person who regularly flew off the handle and unloaded all of his anger on whomever happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's bullying. But it's more. These people get their high by yelling at others. They get an adrenaline rush of anger, and then unleashing the emotions on someone else relieves the tension. And when they want to experience this fight-or-flight high, you can be sure they pick someone they don't think is going to fight. Lots of times, when someone suddenly is a bitch to us, we freeze out of shock, and don't know how to respond. Later, when we process it, we get angry.

Richards has well-documented anger issues. I'll bet there are many, many people with similar stories about him, but like Silverman says, no one wants to say anything bad about Kramer.

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2021 3:01 PM

George was my favorite character. Kramer and Seinfeld should never have been on the show. Neither were funny or good actors.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2021 3:03 PM

That story reads like some kind of petty argument between two people. That's the kind of story that happens between my mom and her neighbor, how one wronged the other by saying something and the other has a comeback two days later. Pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2021 3:03 PM

Didn’t she tell this story years ago?

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2021 3:04 PM

It's not that anyone wants to say anything bad about Kramer, it's just that Michael Richards has been canceled years ago and hasn't been able to make a comeback or recover from it.

To bring this up know serves no purpose other than to get revenge on someone who has already been beaten down.

It's a really bad look for her and no one is going to thank for for speaking up about someone who no longer matters. She looks like a creep and a bully.

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2021 3:08 PM

She is exactly like Richards and Seinfeld. Not funny and a terrible actress.

by Anonymousreply 26November 13, 2021 3:09 PM

This reminds me of a couple years ago when Jason Alexander out of nowhere complained about what a pain the actress who played Susan was on the set.

It was 20+ years ago. I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, but let go of this petty shit!

by Anonymousreply 27November 13, 2021 3:10 PM

He was great in Problem Child. His performance would have stolen the movie, but then there was Amy Yasbeck.

by Anonymousreply 28November 13, 2021 3:11 PM

It happened to her. She can talk about it.

Remember a few years ago when it was revealed that Jeffrey Tambor was an asshole to Jessica Walter on the set of Arrested Development. And Jason Bateman was trying to tell us, "Well, it's no big deal." Everyone got mad, and Jason had to apologize for "mansplaining" Tambor's behavior. It IS a big deal when it happens to YOU.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2021 3:12 PM

Guys, she said they remained friendly. OP cut that part out on purpose.

Also, she told this story on her podcast nearly a year ago.

[quote]Silverman concluded the story by saying Richards accepted her criticism, thus opening the door for them to remain friendly after her time on “Seinfeld” ended. As the actress said, “And then we became casually friendly and he would call me sometimes.”

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2021 3:13 PM

I agree George could was obnoxious, especially later in the series, but not more than Kramer and Alexander was the better actor. Kramer was pretty one-note and got less amusing the more he was used.

Seinfeld was not a good actor, but he seemed to know it, and it kind of worked with how he was written.

Funny and well-written show, but don't often watch it now because on repeat viewing it is hard not to focus on horrible all the characters are.

by Anonymousreply 31November 13, 2021 3:13 PM

[quote]“But you know, I’m still a pro.” “What’s that noise?” and Silverman is supposed to respond, “It’s probably the wind.” Instead, she says, “It’s probably the rain.”

You’re obviously not a “pro”, Sarah. Know your lines.

by Anonymousreply 32November 13, 2021 3:15 PM

George was more interesting than Kramer, who was just an oddball. George came across as more of a sociopath than the rest and I think audiences were put off by that, they wanted to pretend these characters were merely eccentrics with assholish undertones and you couldn't do that with George.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2021 3:17 PM

Fuck him. He was breathing rare air born in large part by good luck. Stars set the tone on a set. He should’ve been more gracious and understanding.

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2021 3:17 PM

R31 When Alexander did a bit part on Julia's show The New Adventures of Old Christine as her gynecologist it was comedy gold because they are both excellent actors and naturally funny. It wouldn't have worked AT ALL with Richards or Seinfeld.

by Anonymousreply 35November 13, 2021 3:18 PM

[quote]He should’ve been more gracious and understanding.

No. Come prepared when you’re working at that level. If not, head to community theatre.

by Anonymousreply 36November 13, 2021 3:19 PM

She wasn't wrong, but they're both assholes.

I hope she's not trying to crawl back into the public eye. Between her and Amy Schumer, it'd be nice if we had a moratorium on unfunny comediennes.

by Anonymousreply 37November 13, 2021 3:20 PM

Oh this ugly bitch is complaining about someone/something again... her life would have been much smoother without that Jew face

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2021 3:21 PM

R38, are you a gay man proudly displaying anti-semitism? You think homophobia is so great? You know what the other anti-semites would do to gays if they got their way?

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2021 3:23 PM

He humiliated her. Actors make Freudian slips all the time and never get treated that poorly. You reset and go again. She should have clocked his abusive behavior when it happened so they could both get over it.

Having said that, they're both assholes. A Muslim friend of mine met her at a party and they hit it off until my friend told her she was Muslim and then Sarah put her in the deep freeze. She sounds like a fucking hypocrite to me.

by Anonymousreply 40November 13, 2021 3:24 PM

Connie Ford would have made mincemeat of her.

by Anonymousreply 41November 13, 2021 3:27 PM

What many seem to be missing is how hard it can be when you’re guesting on a show. The regulars have status and they also know the routine and everybody they interact with, and presumably have their characters down pat, while the guest doesn’t know how to find the bathroom and is learning names and the culture, forget finding a character and remembering their lines.

So it’s far from equal footing and the guests rely on the stars to make them feel welcome and comfortable so they can do their best work.

She muffed a single word. Big deal.

I watched a show tape once where one character had to burst into tears in the midst of an emotional monologue. They had to keep reshooting because the other actor or the cameramen blew their movements. She never got mad. They quickly blotted her tears and she’d do another take and then another, each time succeeding in finding the emotion she needed. That’s a pro.

by Anonymousreply 42November 13, 2021 3:30 PM

Calm your tits, Karen at R39. Sarah herself has talked about her Jewface and how Kimmel never told her that she was pretty, etc etc.

by Anonymousreply 43November 13, 2021 3:34 PM

R43=Michael Richards

by Anonymousreply 44November 13, 2021 3:35 PM

I loathe Seinfeld - the show, the actors in real life, the whole thing.

I HATE that fucking music they play even more than I hate the Charlie Brown theme (love the comic strip, hate, hate, HATE the cartoons).

I'm sick of comedy based off the fact that the the entire cast is made up of vile people.

I can't stand this nasty, unfunny bitch and I can't stand the ugly cunt who played Kramer.

Bring me the head of Larry David.

by Anonymousreply 45November 13, 2021 3:36 PM

So, what was the fucking noise?

by Anonymousreply 46November 13, 2021 3:39 PM

If you all bitching about her got yelled at like she did you would be on here starting a thread about it.

Hypocrites

Anti-Semites = tiny meat

by Anonymousreply 51November 13, 2021 3:52 PM

If you could absorb what I wrote, R50, you’d comprehend that it’s natural for a guest… overwhelmed by all they’re dealing with… to muff a single word. Not unusual.

by Anonymousreply 52November 13, 2021 3:52 PM

I really liked your post, R42. Well said.

by Anonymousreply 53November 13, 2021 3:57 PM

I hate the Seinfeld music as well. 🤮🤮🤮

by Anonymousreply 54November 13, 2021 3:58 PM

"A single word" when she probably had scarcely more than a line or two. Hit the ground running, that's what you have to do. She didn't. It's no wonder her acting career hasn't been up to much.

by Anonymousreply 55November 13, 2021 3:58 PM

Silverman's comedy is forgettable for the most part. I find it difficult to be interested in a workplace squabble from long ago.

Having said that, I think the song linked below was pretty funny.

The opposite to Silverman, then.

by Anonymousreply 57November 13, 2021 3:59 PM

It's not necessary to be screamed at like that..for a small mistake. How many retakes are done in filming...even with the best of them? You see the blooper footages all the time..and most people just laugh. Michael Richards with his inflated ego, portraying a big doofus on Seinfeld.

by Anonymousreply 58November 13, 2021 4:02 PM

Yeah with her racist stand up shows from the past, she should stfu if she doesn't want a blow back.

by Anonymousreply 59November 13, 2021 4:02 PM

It was a short, sharp outburst. It didn't scar her for life. She's scrambling for content for her podcast. Nothing to see here.

by Anonymousreply 60November 13, 2021 4:08 PM

Contrast this with the experience that comedian Julie Goldman recently had when filming The Morning Show.

I think she had a single line but the director didn’t like her delivery and gave her some direction that she didn’t understand. She tried again and he was getting frustrated.

Reece, who was in the scene, quietly took Julie aside and shared what she thought the director was looking for. She was kind and helpful, and Julie nailed the scene.

Reece was a mensch and Michael a grade-A asshole.

by Anonymousreply 61November 13, 2021 4:10 PM

Marilyn Monroe wouldn't have surivived on the set of Seinfeld...

by Anonymousreply 62November 13, 2021 4:13 PM

*survived^^

by Anonymousreply 63November 13, 2021 4:13 PM

Julie, like Silverman, is also a nonactor. She makes her living from comedy she writes/performs herself.

by Anonymousreply 64November 13, 2021 4:14 PM

[Quote] Marilyn Monroe wouldn't have surivived on the set of Seinfeld...

False equivalency. Monroe became difficult when she became a star. She was able to be difficult once she gained status.

by Anonymousreply 65November 13, 2021 4:14 PM

Reece likes the gays.

by Anonymousreply 66November 13, 2021 4:15 PM

Michael Richards is one of those celebrities that, to me, has always looked like a cranky old man, no matter how young he was.

by Anonymousreply 67November 13, 2021 4:43 PM

Her hair is so pretty there. Love the orange tone lipstick too.

by Anonymousreply 68November 13, 2021 5:35 PM

Shut up Sarah, you bitch. You’re lucky to have had a scene with a legend of an actor like Richards.

by Anonymousreply 69November 13, 2021 5:40 PM

And here I thought she was going to say he raped her.

by Anonymousreply 70November 13, 2021 5:42 PM

It was hardly a major incident, but I’m glad she said “I don’t give a fuck!” to him at the dinner. That’s where the story begins and ends.

There are all kinds of assholes working in all sorts of industries. Not each encounter counts as an incident of emotional abuse, or a #MeToo thing. Not sure if she was framing like that.

None of this is an endorsement of Silverman, she’s been a fuck-up for years now, ever since the second Bernie candidacy.

by Anonymousreply 71November 13, 2021 5:45 PM

As much as I loved him on Seinfeld, Michael Richards has a well known anger management problem. He lashed out at all his castmates when they flubbed a line or broke and laughed too. And you know, the whole racist incident was the same sort of uncontrolled explosion of rage. I'm not a fan of Sarah Silverman but this sounds legit, it's exactly what I expect from him sadly.

by Anonymousreply 72November 13, 2021 5:58 PM

Hisss Hisss Hiss It was a Jewess!! You know how they are!!!

FFS sake, old comedian talks about how mean someone was to her 25 years ago for about 2 minutes when she guest starred in a hit series for about 2 days. She's certainly doing her bit to reinforce the stereotype of women being petty, unforgiving and never letting anything go.

by Anonymousreply 74November 13, 2021 6:29 PM

[quote]Please. You come to set with the lines learned. Silverman said nothing about the line being a replacement line.

Oh, stop. They all messed up on that show every now and then including Richards himself. She flubbed a word and he threw a fit. Then he tried to pretend as if it never happened.

Anyone else would have laughed it off or said nothing while they did the take again because they all make mistakes.

That being said, Richards hated it when people messed up their lines to the point where there's a compilation of his actions after the other cast members did but he didn't dare yell at them like he did Sarah Silverman.

To his slight credit, he did say years later that he wishes he hadn't of taken it all so seriously.

by Anonymousreply 76November 13, 2021 6:38 PM

She didn't just flub a word. She wasn't on her game. And he called her on it. Could he have been kinder? Sure. But she got the message.

by Anonymousreply 77November 13, 2021 6:41 PM

The director, if he said cut, should have been the one to correct her, or call for the correct line, if it was that much of a problem. The director should have also reprimanded Richards, whose outburst is even more akin to giving notes to a fellow actor, but worse due to how furiously he reacted. People screw up lines -- Richards and the rest of "Seinfeld" have outtake reels of them, fer Chrissake!

by Anonymousreply 78November 13, 2021 6:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 83November 13, 2021 7:06 PM

She's reprehensible. She made her career out of being politically incorrect regarding ethnic minorities and men& women, and now she's acting like Little Ms. Woke.

by Anonymousreply 84November 13, 2021 7:19 PM

If you watch early episodes of Seinfeld, Kramer is acting like Reverend Jim on Taxi. George is acting like Woody Allen. It's not like Michael Richards was some kind of comedic genius right out of the box. He should have had more patience.

Bloopers: Elaine made most of the mistakes requiring a retake. JLD seemed to find her mistakes to be hysterical. I can see how that could get irritating if you just wanted to finish shooting and go home. Yes, MR looked nonplussed. Credit where credit is due, though. MR does seem like a one-take actor (judging from bloopers).

Sarah Silverman: Not a huge fan. She said Louis CK asked her: Do you want to see me jack off? She said: Hell, yeah? What a freak (both of them). However, it was one word (rain) and she was probably nervous. It's her story to tell. I don't care how long ago it happened. IMO, it's interesting.

by Anonymousreply 85November 13, 2021 7:41 PM

I meant "Hell, yeah," without a question mark.

by Anonymousreply 86November 13, 2021 7:41 PM

What was the bad experience, exactly? Did he tell her "you are ugly, untalented, unfunny and have a personality as appealing as black mold"? Because in that case, he wasn't bullying or harassing her: he simply told her the truth.

by Anonymousreply 87November 13, 2021 7:57 PM

R75, ooh yeah, from that footage you can just tell MR was a major rageaholic....how did anyone endure it?

by Anonymousreply 89November 13, 2021 8:14 PM

Tiresome yenta.

by Anonymousreply 90November 13, 2021 8:15 PM

There's nothing wrong with Silverman telling the story, particularly in a podcast.

The problem is the media trying to make everyone a traumatized victim.

by Anonymousreply 91November 13, 2021 8:29 PM

Even pros forget their lines. And the one-liners are surprisingly difficult, actually. And she was nervous, which she's allowed to be. Having to retake that didn't cost anyone very much money, so I'm with her on this. Richards was being a dick.

by Anonymousreply 92November 13, 2021 8:38 PM

This is rich coming from someone who allowed Michael Sheen to berate her in public.

by Anonymousreply 93November 13, 2021 9:35 PM

So Julia Louis-Dreyfus was the Betty White to Michael Richards’ Bea Arthur?

by Anonymousreply 94November 13, 2021 9:49 PM

I don’t doubt she gets snippy with people, but there may be some embellishing going on.
