What's the best BritCom of all time? (REVISED)

I wish we could edit posts on here. Here's the full poll on which is the best British comedy series of all time.

by Anonymousreply 31November 12, 2021 3:45 AM

Really tough to make a choice among all those fabulous series. I was just thinking about "Alas Smith and Jones", which was also great. And there was some comedy with British-Indian actors - my whole family was cracking up at a sketch where they went to a British restaurant and dared each other to order the blandest thing on the menu. I wonder what that was?

by Anonymousreply 1November 11, 2021 7:43 PM

Ten spaces isn’t enough.

by Anonymousreply 2November 11, 2021 8:10 PM

Father Ted.

by Anonymousreply 3November 11, 2021 8:14 PM

Fawlty Towers?

by Anonymousreply 4November 11, 2021 8:16 PM

This list is invalid unless without Peep Show and The IT Crowd (unless In-Crowd is a typo). Peep Show was hysterical.

by Anonymousreply 5November 11, 2021 8:19 PM

Cross out "unless" above - typo madness!

by Anonymousreply 6November 11, 2021 8:20 PM

Yes, Minister/Yes Prime Minister

The Good Life

To The Manor Born

by Anonymousreply 7November 11, 2021 8:21 PM

OP here, yes, I mean to type the IT Crowd

by Anonymousreply 8November 11, 2021 8:21 PM

Little Britain is my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 9November 11, 2021 9:03 PM

Vicar of Dibley, anyone?

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2021 9:03 PM

Gavin & stacey

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2021 9:04 PM

As Time Goes By is like ASMR for me, I find it immensely comforting.

Same with Barefoot Contessa and The Office US version but As Time Goes By has been around longer so it is my first comfort show.

by Anonymousreply 12November 11, 2021 9:07 PM

Um- Last of the Summer Wine- World's longest running sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 13November 11, 2021 9:18 PM

"Fawlty Towers" is missing -- usually considered probably GOAT

"Doctor in the House"

"The Good Life" - Richard Briers, Felicity Kendall, Penelope Keith

"The Vicar of Dibley"

"As Time Goes By"

"Are You Being Served"

and yes, the Bucket woman

by Anonymousreply 14November 11, 2021 9:22 PM

Only fools and horses

by Anonymousreply 15November 11, 2021 9:27 PM

No love for The Thick Of It, starring Peter Capaldi?

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2021 9:29 PM

"The Good Life" was also retitled "The Good Neighbors" in the US - very good show

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2021 9:30 PM

I am Gen X and my list it:

Peep Show

Alan Partridge

The Office

The Thick of It

Those are the best sitcoms of the last 20 years. The older sitcoms are classics that I love, but they were repetitive and not innovative.

by Anonymousreply 18November 11, 2021 9:34 PM

Coupling should at least be honorably mentioned.

Still going with The Thick of It, with Fawlty Towers and The Office (UK) close behind. I loved Peter Capaldi in the 1983 film "Local Hero"; after that, watching him portray Malcolm Tucker was astonishing (and hilarious).

Nathan Barley. Years ahead of its time.

I agree with you r20 about The Thick of It and Capaldi. I rewatch it every year. I tried to watch VEEP and bailed.

by Anonymousreply 22November 11, 2021 10:27 PM

R1, was it The Kumars at No. 42?

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2021 10:31 PM

Although, on second thought, I didn't see the whole series but don't remember that kind of "situation" (as in "situation comedy"); just the guest interviews.

by Anonymousreply 24November 11, 2021 10:33 PM

My favorite classic Britcom is Vicar of Dibley but I love As Time Goes By and Keeping Up Appearances because for their nostalgia value. The one that makes me laugh out loud is W1A - brilliant cast and dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 25November 11, 2021 10:34 PM

R23 - no, I don't think so - I watched that one, too, but they never left their little studio, did they? The Kumars was more like a talk show than skits. I loved it, also, though.

by Anonymousreply 26November 12, 2021 12:46 AM

R23 - I think it was actually "Goodness Gracious Me". I actually had the hots for Sanjeev Bhaskar.

by Anonymousreply 27November 12, 2021 12:48 AM

No Monty Python? Go home Yank!

by Anonymousreply 28November 12, 2021 2:02 AM

Among my favorites that haven’t been mentioned yet are Two’s Company (Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden), Gimme Gimme Gimme (Kathy Burke and James Dreyfus; written by Jonathan Harvey), and Blott on the Landscape (Geraldine James and David Suchet). The first show had a limited run in the US in the 1970s, and I think the other two weren’t aired in the US.

by Anonymousreply 29November 12, 2021 2:41 AM

"Monty Python's Flying Circus" was not a sitcom. It was a sketch comedy show.

The fact that the OP omitted "Fawlty Towers" renders this poll invalid.

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2021 3:42 AM

I love Blackadder. So clever.
