I wish we could edit posts on here. Here's the full poll on which is the best British comedy series of all time.
What's the best BritCom of all time? (REVISED)

Really tough to make a choice among all those fabulous series. I was just thinking about "Alas Smith and Jones", which was also great. And there was some comedy with British-Indian actors - my whole family was cracking up at a sketch where they went to a British restaurant and dared each other to order the blandest thing on the menu. I wonder what that was?

Ten spaces isn’t enough.

Father Ted.

Fawlty Towers?

This list is invalid unless without Peep Show and The IT Crowd (unless In-Crowd is a typo). Peep Show was hysterical.

Cross out "unless" above - typo madness!

OP here, yes, I mean to type the IT Crowd

Vicar of Dibley, anyone?

As Time Goes By is like ASMR for me, I find it immensely comforting.
Same with Barefoot Contessa and The Office US version but As Time Goes By has been around longer so it is my first comfort show.

Um- Last of the Summer Wine- World's longest running sitcom.

"Fawlty Towers" is missing -- usually considered probably GOAT
"Doctor in the House"
"The Good Life" - Richard Briers, Felicity Kendall, Penelope Keith
"The Vicar of Dibley"
"As Time Goes By"
"Are You Being Served"
and yes, the Bucket woman

No love for The Thick Of It, starring Peter Capaldi?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 11, 2021 9:29 PM |
"The Good Life" was also retitled "The Good Neighbors" in the US - very good show

I am Gen X and my list it:
Peep Show
Alan Partridge
The Office
The Thick of It
Those are the best sitcoms of the last 20 years. The older sitcoms are classics that I love, but they were repetitive and not innovative.

Coupling should at least be honorably mentioned.

Still going with The Thick of It, with Fawlty Towers and The Office (UK) close behind. I loved Peter Capaldi in the 1983 film "Local Hero"; after that, watching him portray Malcolm Tucker was astonishing (and hilarious).

I agree with you r20 about The Thick of It and Capaldi. I rewatch it every year. I tried to watch VEEP and bailed.

R1, was it The Kumars at No. 42?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 11, 2021 10:31 PM |
Although, on second thought, I didn't see the whole series but don't remember that kind of "situation" (as in "situation comedy"); just the guest interviews.

My favorite classic Britcom is Vicar of Dibley but I love As Time Goes By and Keeping Up Appearances because for their nostalgia value. The one that makes me laugh out loud is W1A - brilliant cast and dialogue.

R23 - no, I don't think so - I watched that one, too, but they never left their little studio, did they? The Kumars was more like a talk show than skits. I loved it, also, though.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 12, 2021 12:46 AM |
R23 - I think it was actually "Goodness Gracious Me". I actually had the hots for Sanjeev Bhaskar.

No Monty Python? Go home Yank!

Among my favorites that haven’t been mentioned yet are Two’s Company (Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden), Gimme Gimme Gimme (Kathy Burke and James Dreyfus; written by Jonathan Harvey), and Blott on the Landscape (Geraldine James and David Suchet). The first show had a limited run in the US in the 1970s, and I think the other two weren’t aired in the US.

"Monty Python's Flying Circus" was not a sitcom. It was a sketch comedy show.
The fact that the OP omitted "Fawlty Towers" renders this poll invalid.

I love Blackadder. So clever.
