What's the best BritCom of all time?

Who doesn't love a great British TV comedy? As an American viewer I don't always get all the references, but the acting is always superb.

by Anonymousreply 38November 12, 2021 12:50 AM

Ab Fab had maybe 4 good seasons. And Jennifer Saunders is incredibly snobbish IRL. Joanna Lumley a Tory asskisser.

by Anonymousreply 1November 11, 2021 7:22 PM

Lovejoy is my favourite! Ian mcshane as a roguish, picaresque antique dealer. Fell off after season three but the first few seasons are great.

Oops, I hit post before I finished the poll. Was going to include Fawlty Towers, The In-Crowd, Keeping Up Appearances, and others.

by Anonymousreply 3November 11, 2021 7:31 PM

Father Ted.

by Anonymousreply 4November 11, 2021 7:31 PM

Young Ones was a wacky good show, I should say, old man.

by Anonymousreply 5November 11, 2021 7:32 PM

Lady Jane FELSHSAM sorry!

by Anonymousreply 6November 11, 2021 7:35 PM

I do miss the old BBCAmerica when they showed these. Now, it's endless reruns of ST and some Robin Hood movie.

by Anonymousreply 7November 11, 2021 7:36 PM

I’d also nominate Peep Show (which features future Oscar winner Olivia Coleman prominently as nagging wife and mum Sophie. The wedding episode may be the most painful to watch tv episode ever)

British sitcoms? The genre seems to be going the way of the Dodo bird.

Anything new in the last five years? Are they on British Netflix or somewhere?

Faulty Towers (not a bad episode in the lot)

Are you Being Served? (could get a bit tedious, but it was a stalwart and very cozy)

AbFab (when it was good it was fabulous, but couldn't sustain the energy)

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2021 7:56 PM

Ahem, FAWLTY towers. Sorry!

by Anonymousreply 12November 11, 2021 7:58 PM

Dinnerladies.

Black Books. Period. End of Poll. ;-)

by Anonymousreply 14November 11, 2021 8:05 PM

Why has no one mentioned the most superior BritCom, "Keeping Up Appearences?"

by Anonymousreply 15November 11, 2021 8:08 PM

Came here to say that, r8. Peep Show is hilarious and still holds up. Very quotable too.

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2021 8:14 PM

Another vote for Father Ted.

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2021 8:15 PM

R14 Oh god, how could I forget Black Books!

I will put it on my list as a tie with Fawlty Towers.

"As Time Goes By," with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer.

"Upstart Crow," about William Shakespeare.

by Anonymousreply 20November 11, 2021 8:22 PM

'Little Britain'. 'Max Headroom' 'Red Dwarf'

by Anonymousreply 21November 11, 2021 8:26 PM

Black Adder and Father Ted

by Anonymousreply 22November 11, 2021 8:29 PM

Black adder was sort of funnY for an episode or two in it’s first few seasons I guess.

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2021 8:31 PM

I like The Good Life for the hilarious Penelope Keith.

Margo Leadbetter, a posher, non-delusional Hyacinth Bucket with better tits, is a DL icon.

She took most of the wardrobe budget for the show and was partial to earrings and caftans

Anyone remember name of series with old priest and his new assistant?

by Anonymousreply 25November 11, 2021 8:55 PM

Father Ted?

by Anonymousreply 26November 11, 2021 8:58 PM

Or do you mean the one with Arthur Lowe?

by Anonymousreply 27November 11, 2021 8:59 PM

Are You Being Served? is my all time favorite. I’m currently enjoying “Still Game” on Netflix, a very funny sitcom from Scotland. Can’t wait for the next season of Derry Girls

by Anonymousreply 28November 11, 2021 9:00 PM

As Time Goes By is such a delight to watch... definitely one to curl up with on a Sunday afternoon in the winter (I know, Iknow, I type incredibly gay). And because I love Geoffrey Palmer, I'm adding Butterflies as a delightful and should be much more remembers Brit Com.

And a shout out to Penelope Keith for To the Manor Born.

Does Waiting for God make the cut?

Want to guess how effing old I am/feel? Good God I've been watching PBS for decades...

by Anonymousreply 29November 11, 2021 9:09 PM

Keeping Up Appearances

by Anonymousreply 30November 11, 2021 9:17 PM

The Thick of It

by Anonymousreply 31November 11, 2021 9:18 PM

To the Manor Born was my favorite

by Anonymousreply 32November 11, 2021 9:23 PM

R29 Waiting for God is very underrated. Diana is a great character.

I adore Upstart Crow and (especially) To the Manor Born, but I have a soft spot for Mum, although I don't know if that falls under the category of comedy or dramedy - even though there are more than enough laughs in each episode.

R29 Butterflies is amazing. Bittersweet, regretful and a touch erotic. And laugh out loud funny to boot. Wendy Craig is amazing. Her lazy, stupid sons are hilarious and sexy.

It’s the Brief Encounter scenario encounter stetched out over 4 series. All that and a Dolly Parton theme song!

I don’t think any other show captured the fantasising, almost-depressed, unfulfilled middle class housewife so well.

My mother loved it when my siblings were toddlers, which is a bit of a worry.

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2021 12:23 AM

Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister are absolutely brilliant.

The whole Alan Partridge saga deserves a shout-out, too.

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2021 12:35 AM

Are You Being Served? was hilarious in it's early seasons, because of a wonderful cast. Like most sitcoms, it faltered when it pushed one character from ensemble member to lead (Mr. Humphries - the Fonzie syndrome) and had poor recasting. Whoever decided that replacing the sexy/funny Mr. Lucas with that skinny dweeb would be a good idea should be shot. Same thing with the awful parade of replacements for the wonderful Mr. Grainger. And Young Mr. Grace with the incredibly fake Old Mr. Grace.

The best BritCom of all time ? Mr. Bean
