Just the other day I was thinking, I wonder what’s new with Andy Dick. Turns out, very little.

He looks better than I thought he would in his mugshot.

He really does swing back and forth between chicks and dicks. Last I heard he was married to a woman. I'm shocked he's lived this long.

He is not unattractive and he is not without talent. I remember him from some very funny content at his peak, and I’m sad his is such a mess right now. I loved some of his zany content from MTV. Here's my Andy Dick story:

Many years ago, I handled the public relations for my company at the same time when 'News Radio' was on the air.. I was doing a media appearance on the local NBC affiliate on a Saturday morning. Unbeknownst to me--until I arrived at the studio that morning--Any Dick was also going to be a guest on the same NBC Saturday morning show, sort of a local version of the "Today" show. While I was waiting in the Green Room before going on the air (my segment was scheduled before Andy Dick's appearance), Andy Dick walked into the Green Room. He was loaded, high as a kite, who knows. There was no way he was going to sit in the chairs while all of us wait. No, Andy needed to lie down, but there was nowhere to lie down other than the floor. There were comfortable living room-type upholstered chairs, but no couch. Andy decided to clear away everything that was sitting atop this long credenza wooden piece of furniture in the Green Room. The credenza was long and wide enough to accommodate a grown adult man's body. And there Andy was half-awake/half-asleep tossing and turning atop this piece of furniture.

Because this was the local NBC affiliate and since 'News Radio' aired on NBC, the producer and anchors felt they needed to get him on the air rather than cancel his appearance altogether. His media handler who arrived with him apologized but played down how loaded he was. "He's just tired; it was a late night." After a bit of time, they got Andy somewhat together, gave him some coffee and determined that he was okay to go on the air. I could tell he wasn't since I was in the Green Room with him, but it wasn't my decision. The producer decided to bump me from my segment and put me on the air in what would have been Andy's later segment. They apparently just wanted to get Andy on the air and out of the building as soon as possible. Andy went on the air and made a complete fool of himself. The news anchor doing the interview tried her best to make the interview funny and lighthearted while Andy sat there spouting nonsense and being rude and foolish. The anchor did her best, but eventually cut the interview short, and thanked him for coming on the air.

This all took place between 8:00-9:00am in the morning, so it was a bit early, but not the crack of dawn. I eventually went on the air, did my thing. NBC thanked me for switching segments and putting up with all this chaos in the Green Room. Andy Dick was a mess, rude, out of control and terrible guest to represent 'News Radio.' I never gave Andy Dick a thought before this incident, but I lost all respect for him from that point. I witnessed right there in front of me how this drunken fool disrupted a news show that was live on the air. Andy didn't care. He was out of it. And then thankfully, he was gone so on set and backstage could return to normal.

I'll always remember how he showed up in Sober House, the follow up show to Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. He showed up in the sober house with all of TWO days of sobriety under his belt. Yep, just two days straight into a sober house and skipping detox and rehab.

Jennifer Gimenez, the house manager, was so star struck by him, it was love at first sight. In the next episode, it could have been two days later, top three, we got to watch Andy Dick go to meet old friends and former friends to say how sorry to have behaved the way he did while intoxicated: the man was progressing so fast in his 12-step program that he was already standing at the ninth step while hilariously thirteen-stepping with the house manager...

His name suits him well. He acts like a dick in the worst way possible.

When you think how well financially some of his affiliates (Ben Stiller, even Kathy Griffin) became through fairly basic self-control and accountability, it must feel terrible to have flown close to the sun but have so much less stature and financial freedom. It’s sad. He must be a hopelessly impulsive guy to have early, legit success, and then fuck it all up being grabby and creepy. I feel bad for him, and his kids. I remember watching him on a Comedy Central Roast of Pam Anderson, and he was so awful and disturbing. Complex addiction looks like a real bitch to manage, even survive.

There was a time, about 2000, when he was a legit ‘player’, with a special diet of Zone food to stay at a healthy weight, etc. Now he looks like his basic needs might go unmet in a few years, maybe sooner. That would freak me out, that loss of stature and financial security. What a fuckup.

I did enjoy some of his older MTV skits, particularly a mock commercial for Sea Dicks (a parody of sea monkeys that was really odd and subversive and fun), and a dating show parody where he portrayed a contestant named Zitty McGee. It was rough and disturbing, and pretty funny.

Some of his Stern Show appearances were pretty dark and personal. Stern elicited some really personal information about Andy’s sexuality and anatomy. In retrospect that feels exploitive, but Andy participated in full, describing his endowment really explicitly. It was lurid.

While he obviously has serious substance abuse issues, most abusive people I've known are inherently abusive, even when sober. Drugs and alcohol exacerbate the abusive behavior, sure, but they don't cause it. They also make it easier for the abuser to avoid taking full responsibility.

I think I also remember a MaddTV skit where Andy tried to break up Jack Black’s operatic pop duo Tenacious D by offering one of the members a chance to join his own duo, Hellacious A. Andy stayed in character and was actually pretty clever and funny.

He was an appealing, offbeat and oddly sexual presence for a span of time, but he needed guardrails and looks like he did not have them. A lot of lost opportunity in evidence, and that’s sad.

He has two kids. Can you imagine him as a dad?

I was in school at the onset of Andy’s career, and for some reason I remember him affiliating with Jeanine Garofolo and Kathy Griffin. Griffin did little comedy spots on cable tv, including one where she gave a tour of her closet, and produced a horsewhip and said  ‘sometimes I have to get strict’. She was so cute. Andy was like an offbeat emerging comic at that time, and so was Garofolo. For a time Garofolo made films that included a romantic comedy with Uma Thurman. At that time, I wondered where they would end up professionally. Andy and Kathy landed in sitcoms, which was probably a big deal. I feel bad for him now. It must be hard remembering those days of promise.

Garafalo also ended up in a sitcom: Larry Sanders.
