Maybe I misunderstood but I thought a dislike was just as valuable as a like to the youtube people. Either way was engagement for the algorithm to count.

How else is the public going to know if something sucked? Like Aaron Rodger’s videos getting disliked 6 million times or the female Ghostbusters getting a 200:1 ratio of dislikes. It sends a message.

People do abuse the dislike button a lot. You'll see a video of an interview with a celebrity and it has hundreds of likes, but maybe a hundred or two hundred dislikes and you wonder why it has those. If someone dislikes the celebrity, wouldn't they just not watch the video? Seems like nothing more than immature troll behavior.

I’ve always found the dislike button slightly mean spirited. Unless something is overtly offensive, I never bother to hit the dislike button, I just don’t “like” it. That’s sufficient.

But why thumb down something like a litter of puppies playing when the video title says Puppies Playing? It's absurd.

I watch a tiny creator, her vids get like about 2,000 views/vid. Anyway, when she did a Q&A she was asked why she started her channel, she said that she had always been a little timid and she noticed her children becoming like that. So she wanted to do something outside her comfort zone and teach them it's OK to be nervous and uncomfortable and more importantly, if people harass or are critical of you or your videos, that's OK, because you have to learn to cope with that thing in life.

I was very impressed with that answer. Too bad we no longer teach children how to cope with situations.

Seems like a strawman argument that the right wingers applied to politics. The Verge referenced YouTube's own "YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind" as having 19 million dislikes.

I always wondered how the Dislike button was helpful on YouTube anyway.

I don't watch videos of people offering stupid opinions or political advice or things that, by their very nature I might dislike; I go to YouTube to explore the songs of s singer I just discovered, or how to fix the a stuck key on my MacBook, or to watch Episode 379 of Dark Shadows, not to vote up or down some clown who spends 26 minutes unboxing a USB-C charger.

I use dislike, but do so sparingly. It's not mean, especially when YouTube is making bank off watching an entire video, along with boosting that videos popularity, jamming in sometimes 6 ads for a 5 min video.

Why use it? Videos that use clickbait, content not even close to what was advertised, hidden propaganda (like a youtuber sprinkling in unsavory, hateful political veiws, without warning), shitty content, etc.

This is another example of companies taking away the right to give some form of feedback. Bs it's about "bullying", when they aren't talking about controlling comment sections. What's worse, a thumbs down, or a nasty tirade, or thousands? Couldn't be that busy commemts don't disrupt algorithms, because it's treated as good because it reflects high traffic ... ⚠️also strange when I've been getting bombed recently by falsified ad propaganda, like lying anti abortion campaigns. There's ads you can downvote, which always do when it's right wing lies, but now that's not even an option. Wouldn't doubt they complained that their paid for ad was disliked.⚠️

Seriously, what is going on these days to see a dislike as unacceptable? These people do choose to do that as a full time job. Some are raking in millions with their crap "entertainment", but don't dare point that out!

For non readers: there's ads you can dislike in some and Republicans have been hitting up YouTube hard in recent months. I've seen many upset comments about ads being disliked more than liked. Wonder if that ties in.

People downvote anything and everything, R21. The last few videos I watched were INXS and New Order, this one has 3.7K downvotes but the world is still spinning.

The stupid thing about pushing the dislike button is that YouTube counts every up or down vote as an interaction, which pours money into the creator’s pockets.

If you watch a video, downvote, and leave a nasty comment, you’re giving the creator 3 interactions instead of just exiting the video and moving on with your life, which would only give him one interaction.

YouTube comments are really stupid. Yes, some of the comments hit the bullseye and are hilarious. But if you ever really read the comments ... YouTube has the stupidest commenters, IMO.

I like to hope that most YouTube comments are from bored middle schoolers. It scares me to think there are grown adults out there with even less maturity spending their days disliking videos of puppies and calling singers fat.

The majority of people watching Youtube are 15-35. Yes, many of them are children depending on what channel you're looking at.

However, users from 36-45 are only very slightly less than that group. 46-55 are also not that far off. It doesn't drop off until you hit 56.

It serves a completely different purpose than TikTok which is a home for content that's a few seconds long.

What has happened is that more older people watch it but some of that is due to its increased popularity (like TV shows that use Youtube a supplement), some of it is due to an increasing variety of content (it's not just all about a teenager sitting in front of a camera talking about their day anymore) and of course some of that is because the people were watching youtube 15 years ago are now 15 years older.

TikTok is very regular person centered. Youtube can accommodate full productions hours long.

Also people don't downvote "anything and everything." It happens in certain cases which is why one should consider the kind of content they're watching AND the *ratio* of downvotes to likes.

If you're on Youtube you should know people will randomly dislike any content about anyone that's not a white straight man but there usually won't be too many unless there's a campaign against the topic like with "Captain Marvel." That didn't just happen on Youtube. That happened everywhere to the point where it was being written about. is absolutely incorrect. It doesn't "pour money" anywhere. Adsense and sponsors bring the money in. Engagement percentage helps with sponsorship negociations. If you have 5 millions subs but an engagement of 0,2 % you'll get way less than a 100 000 subs channel with 20% engagement (it's just an unrealistic example).

There was a makeup artist who died of COVID who wasn't even able to say the word on her videos when she was sick, r71. I remember people here calling her a "stupid drama queen" for saying a euphemism for COVID instead of the actual word, some DLers could not be convinced that your videos will be hidden or demonetized if you say "COVID."

Youtube has been caught deleting thousands of downvotes and the left wing has a monopoly on big tech and the financial backing necessary to employ PR shills at the call. Yet you blame people who actually use the platform the way it was intended? You're out of your mind.

I don't know what kind of videos you're watching but I watch mainstream and alternative content with people of different politics and never get recommended those videos. If those videos had any significant reach, I would downvote them, but as is often the case, I'd rather just let them die on the vine.

Downvotes also provide a more utilitarian function. They allow people to downvote videos that are used to signify click farms disguised as instructional vids.

That’s why a lot of YouTube videos have part 1, part 2, part 3, etc. Just break it up in digestible chunks. It’s easy enough. If 3 minutes is too long they can go the Vine route and do 6 seconds.
