Australian Survivor -- U.S. fans?
Are you a US Survivor fan but not feeling season 41? Some of us have found Australian Survivor on Paramount + and want a place to discuss. I feel bad that our chat about Australian Survivor took over the Survivor 41 thread a bit so decided to start this thread.
Even though the seasons aired in 2019, 2020, and earlier this year I've remained spoiler free, and am glad because I have been enjoying not knowing what's going to happen.
So for the time being let's keep it to general discussion about the series and players. And once a bunch of us have caught up, then we can open up the discussion more.
And of course, don't forget dreamy host Jonathan LaPaglia.

I’m still on the first season (well the first available on Paramount) and it’s so good, but shit, there’s a lot of contestants. Did US Survivor used to have 24 contestants per season?
ET is a hot daddy, and Shaun is just an absolute god. Mullet coal miner Johnno has a nice thick natural body.
I’m enjoying this a lot.

We're almost finished with Season 4 (with Shaun) and are enjoying it immensely. Pretty much the same set-up as the U.S. version, but much better done. Hot and more interesting contestants, better challenges, better cinematography, the whole shebang.
We've also noticed that the Aussies are generally much nicer and supportive of one another than the Americans...which I suppose comes as no surprise.

Thanks OP, glad we can discuss this rather than the terrible current US season. I finished season 4 of Aussie a couple of days ago, actually teared up during the last few episodes, it was so good. Shaun is an absolute god, Jesus that man is beautiful. David is stunning too, even the second tier guys are hot. Started season 5, and there’s more near naked wrestling with more hot guys, it’s just as good as season 4.

I watched Champions v Contenders 2 and All-Stars - both were great.
Started Brains vs. Brawn and there is one player who is just so frustrating. No spoilers - but still makes for good TV!

I’m a little over half way through Champions vs. Contenders, and there is a contestant who I hate probably more than any other contestant ever. But that’s fun! I can’t remember the last time I even cared enough to hate anyone on US Survivor.

I really enjoy Australian Survivor but the dramatic music throughout is a bit distracting. Or is it just me? It just NEVER lets up. Also, they are significantly longer episodes than the American version, which I'm not sure is good or bad. Some of the tribal council scenes seem to go on for too long (challenges too). Those are just a few of my observations, but it really is a lot of fun to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 8, 2021 1:59 PM

I’ve gotten so used to the length r16 that now I find the American version so short. Agreed it’s much longer

I'm not R11, but my vote for most-hated would have been vile Andy, who thought he was the mastermind of the game...

While the episodes are longer - it does seem, at least for Champs v. Contenders that most of the challenges are a little more thought out and more involved than the US version. Also, exciting too - I thought the reward where they had to go head to head to see who could swim against the current in a rushing river the longest was a great challenge. Simple, but really exciting and not something you’d never see on the US version.

I finally finished Champions vs. Contenders tonight! While it wasn’t the outcome I originally wanted, it was still satisfying. I know it’s from 2019, but I don’t want to spoil anything in case there might be some other converts here who might watch. I do wish I’d been able to watch it back then, because it has way more to discuss than current US Survivor.
Stupid Paramount + should reconsider the “upcoming episode” stills they use. I was spoiled with a few outcomes just from the episode preview images. Grrr.
All in all, just a fun and watchable experience. I especially loved Ross, Shaun, Johnno and Janine.

I almost felt guilty watching because of the lack of diversity. Aside from a couple indigenous/aboriginal contestants, there were maybe 3-4 people of color in the three seasons currently available on Paramount+. That would never float in the U.S.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 11, 2021 1:25 PM

All-Stars too, a little for me to get into as well. I think because I only knew the Champs v. Contenders contestants. There wasn’t a lot of exposition at the beginning because they were already known to the Australian audience. Once I figured out who was who and some of the relationships, I was into it.
And I felt the finale was satisfying, despite the rando Australian Bachelor host.
About four episodes into Brains vs. Brawn. It was tough trying to keep everyone straight at first But I am enjoying, well except for George.

R27, so what about diversity? US Survivor is doing the ultra-diversity bit right now, and it is arguably the worst season ever. So the POC have all bunched up with their own little pod, as usual, and have helped make the whole series as boring and predictable as fuck. I'm glad the Aussies aren't all caught up in that shit.

I’m on to season 6 (brains v brawn), still miles better than the US version. Many hot guys in particular Emmett with the tight bike shorts, what a gorgeous body that boy has. Simon in his speedo is a welcome sight as well. Have really enjoyed my foray into Survivor Australia, don’t know what I’ll do when I finish this most recent season.

R41, I’ve now finished all the seasons available on Paramount. I didn’t like the last season as much, mainly because of creepy George. Emmett does indeed have a spectacular body. Good on him sporting those yellow biker shorts with his somewhat small package. I’m not a size queen so didn’t make him any less hot. Simon in his speedo is sexy…but no specimen is as impressive as “the horse” Shawn Hampson.

R46 Season 5 is really good too, lots of gorgeous guys. Season 6 has a lot of eye candy too, but the above mentioned George is really intolerable, but it’s good to have a villain sometimes. Definitely try season 5, you won’t regret it, sometimes it seems like soft core gay porn.

Just finished Survivor New Zealand: Thailand on Paramount +. It was a lot of fun, and thankfully, a shorter season than the Australian version. The South African one was a lot of fun...except for the over the top product promotion. The New Zealand version had crappy production values. The sad little cave for tribal? Wasn't Chappies from SA not NZ? He pinged big time and had a bad tramp stamp above his pooper.

It'd odd, Australian Survivor is a carbon copy of the American version - Survivor NZ is almost like something that was run through the copier a few too many times. A little cheaper production value, but an enjoyable season. I was really pleased with the ending and thought the winner was deserving.
While not the exact same eye candy factor of Australian Survivor, definitely some attractive guys - Matt, Dave, Arun, Josh, Brad all good looking.
And Adam made for an enjoyable character.

You know after tearing through Champs vs. Contenders and All-Stars I started Brains vs Brawn and kind of had the same reaction. After I watched NZ I went back and picked up Brains vs. Brawn, and I found it really picked up a bit for me, especially once they hit the merge. I found likable people and a really, in my opinion, deserving winner. So I am glad I ultimately went back - and again some hot men: Simon, Emmett, and Andrew (who was a bit hidden in the early episodes) and Mitch. George, as irritating as he was, is really a great Survivor character for a lot of reasons - I won't go into too much as to not spoil for anyone who hasn't seen.
I decided to start with Season 3, the first Champs vs. Contenders and work my way backward since the winners of 2 and 3 were already spoiled in All-Stars. I am only one episode in but it has Shane, Sharn, Shonee, Zack, Mat Rogers, and Moana from All-Stars. The only drawback with season 3 so far, Russell Hantz is on the Champs tribe. I hate the Hantzes.

I kinda like the longer seasons and at least, pangonging is kept to a minimum like in earlier US versions, which got really tedious.

Had to fastfwd towards end, but finally finished S1 (at least on P+) and what a letdown due to underserving winner.

So despite being told otherwise it seems like the latest season, which premiered yesterday, is not going to be simultaneously carried on Paramount +. I used my VPN to watch it on the Network’s site.
Besides Sandra, from Australian Survivor there are a few returnees - Mark and Sam from season one and Andy fro CvC2.
Off to a good start - really enjoyed watching Sandra’s daughter Nina play. As someone I work with says - Apple trees make apples…

Oh Sam is hot. I am blanking on who Mark is even though I'm watching season 1 right now.... ohhhh the guy who loves the chicken Chester.
Hated Andy.

Thanks for idea r116. Good couple episodes but unfortunately Sam isn't among returnees. Didn't realize that it's on 4 days/wk

I think it’s three days this week and then twice a week starting next week

To watch current season join the private facebook group "tribe has spoken." it's survivor fans and they post links to watch each episode without a VPN.
I had to create a facebook account but if you want to watch - worth it.

It is on four nights a week - damn. I apologize earlier I said I thought it was on twice a week. That's a huge commitment. Although I am enjoying it.

Anyone keeping up with Blood vs. Water?

Yes I'm somewhat enjoying it. Never particularly liked the involvement of family/friends theme. Haven't watched previous seasons w/Sandra, has she always played UTR w/a villain edit? Knowing that's her mojo, I'm surprised AU contestants don't try to get her out asap, on top of the fact she's a foreigner. I do like her daughter tho, as well as some of the male eye candy.

Anyone else who watched season 1 loathe Kristie? I’m down to final 4 and I find her so fucking irritating. She would drive me crazy.

So it’s disappeared from Paramount +. No notice or announcement, just gone. People were in the middle of streaming episodes and boom, nothing just started US Survivor. South Africa and New Zealand are gone too.
I saw one person post online they called Customer Service and were told it was a glitch and that it should be restored within a day. Now people are being told Paramount + does not have the rights to streaming it, which makes no sense. It’s produced by Castaway productions, and the Australian network 10 is owned by Viacom, same as CBS and Paramount. I know there are some weird things with international rights, but if everything is under the same ownership umbrella, it strikes me as odd.
I know it’s just a dumb TV show, but it makes no sense to pull is with no notice or anything in the middle of the evening. I am not a conspiracy person, but I am wondering if CBS bristled at all the positive comments people had especially in light of how poorly received season 41 seemed to be and had it yanked.
Anyway, if it’s not back when I get home from work, I’ll call to cancel. Again, dumb tv show, but this is kind of BS. And then they wonder why people just pirate stuff.

What the hell??? I had just started season 2, and was enjoying Lockey’s nudity. This better come back soon, it’s so much better than the US version.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH apparently we have to wait for the current season to end because they license past seasons while the current one is airing. Current one basically just started.
This is fucked.

Other than the Real World reunion, this was the only thing I was watching there. I may cancel until the new season of The Good Fight.

Strange, strange.
I'm really beginning to think it did come down to Probst (and the powers that be) got their panties in a twist over how popular it became with the fan base. I can totally see Jeff Probst being a pissy little bitch too. JLP > Probst.

R132, thanks for posting that article. I really enjoyed seasons 4, 5, and 6, and now I could kick myself for procrastinating to watch seasons 1, 2, and 3.

Despite being on 2-3x weekly this season seems to have lasted forever. Rooting for the hot pilot or yogi underdog to win

Anyone watching Heroes v. Villains?
Fantastic season so far - better than anything produced in the US in years.
I find myself cheering George, Shonee, and Liz on.
Never realized George was ‘family’, not surprised but never gave it much thought.
