I think somebody is sneaking into my apartment

I’ve been renting in the same building for 5 years and have a pretty solid routine. I leave for work at the same time Monday to Friday and come back at the same time. Maybe 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks I came home and noticed my door was unlocked. The first time I thought I was careless and handy locked it but I’ve been living alone for a long time and there’s no way I’d forget to lock my door this frequently. I lock up at work too and I’ve never left the door unlocked. It’s just not the type of mistake I make. The past week I’ve been making sure I tug on the knob before leaving to make sure it’s locked. Today I did that and when I got home it was unlocked. I have one spare set of keys which I keep locked up in my apartment. I feel insane but it seems like somebody is coming into my apartment during the day. They aren’t stealing anything though and I don’t understand why they would go into my apartment. There’s nothing fun I don’t have a gaming console or anything or even cable. Im not some super hot guy who you’d be stalking. Has anyone ever found out someone has been sneaking into their apartment? Just how many people would have access to keys?

Install a camera. You should be able to see if somebody’s coming in and then you’ll have the proof to prosecute them

Get one of those Wyze cameras for your place.

by Anonymousreply 6November 4, 2021 1:56 AM

before you leave some morning, either scatter baby powder on the floor right inside the door or reach around it before you go and place a bottle or glass close to the side of the door that opens. Whoever is doing this will enter quickly, to avoid detection. they will either step in the powder or knock the glass.

by Anonymousreply 7November 4, 2021 1:57 AM

shut up

by Anonymousreply 8November 4, 2021 1:57 AM

Get a nanny cam.

by Anonymousreply 9November 4, 2021 1:57 AM

Problem with the baby powder and bottle is they will know they have been detected, if they are some real type of nut they might set the place on fire to cover their tracks. You want to know who it is without them knowing they have been detected.

by Anonymousreply 10November 4, 2021 1:59 AM

Maybe it's just a ghost messing with you. Be careful when you sleep.

by Anonymousreply 11November 4, 2021 2:01 AM

The super banging somebody.

by Anonymousreply 12November 4, 2021 2:01 AM

I wonder if they are also sneaking in while you are asleep OP, sweet dreams tonight.

by Anonymousreply 13November 4, 2021 2:03 AM

Maybe the super is working on the pipes in a unit above and making sure nothing it leaking into your apartment. Get a nanny cam asap. Couldn't be a simpler solution.

It’s a daemon. Not a demon, a daemon.

by Anonymousreply 17November 4, 2021 2:09 AM

Get a rocket scientist to poop in your doorway. When the intruder opens, he'll step in the poop and you'll have your man!

by Anonymousreply 18November 4, 2021 2:12 AM

He might be watching over you from your ceiling right now, OP.

by Anonymousreply 19November 4, 2021 2:14 AM

Is it JFK Jr? Maybe he got his earth coordinates wrong.

by Anonymousreply 20November 4, 2021 2:15 AM

Sleep well OP..

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 21November 4, 2021 2:17 AM

That's spooky, OP. I'd call a locksmith and get the lock changed right away. If there's a deadbolt, redo the deadbolt as well. If there is a deadbolt, maybe make different keys for the knob and deadbolt. (My knob and deadbolt open up with the same key.)

I was missing a really cool retractable X-acto type of knife. I had never taken it out of my apartment and always kept it in the same place. Suddenly, it was missing. I think my landlord's relative got in here and stole it, frankly.

by Anonymousreply 22November 4, 2021 2:17 AM

Smelling or stealing your underwear, are you missing any?

by Anonymousreply 25November 4, 2021 2:21 AM

I have a deadbolt that I can lock from the inside but I’m definitely going to get a camera and ask them to change my locks. I enjoy the laughs…maybe they’ll be my last.

by Anonymousreply 26November 4, 2021 2:22 AM

The same thing happened to me when I lived in an apartment, not frequently but it happened. I'm positive it was our creepy landlords who were coming in when I wasn't around. They had spare keys and it could only have been them. I did not like them and I eventually moved.

by Anonymousreply 27November 4, 2021 2:22 AM

Check your window locks. Get a nanny cam.

by Anonymousreply 28November 4, 2021 2:23 AM

It's the gargoyle from next door.

by Anonymousreply 29November 4, 2021 2:23 AM

They tryin to fuck u

by Anonymousreply 30November 4, 2021 2:23 AM

Keep us updated OP. Can you get the locks changed without the super knowing? He’d be my first suspect. Is your bed crumpled at all? He could be banging someone in there and in that case……ewww

by Anonymousreply 31November 4, 2021 2:26 AM

[quote]and ask them to change my locks.

And then they'll just use the new keys to get in.

Maybe you are leaving it unlocked.

by Anonymousreply 32November 4, 2021 2:28 AM

Yeah, that's why I say call a locksmith, independently. But maybe OP lives in a multi-unit place where the super (or whoever) has the keys to all units. (In case of water leaks, etc.)

by Anonymousreply 33November 4, 2021 2:29 AM

What OP failed to mention is he has a lover. In fact, they have been together for three years. Mystery solved.

by Anonymousreply 34November 4, 2021 2:32 AM

Fie,R32 ! Poor Op came in here baring her soul to us out of fear for her life and this is how you treat her ??? Cant you see she's terrified ???

by Anonymousreply 35November 4, 2021 2:34 AM

Plot twist: The Others!

by Anonymousreply 36November 4, 2021 2:35 AM

This happened to me before, it turned out a Twink kept getting lost in my home and was trying to get out. Did you forget you left a Twink behind before locking up?

by Anonymousreply 37November 4, 2021 2:38 AM

If someone was sneaking in, I think they wouldn’t be so careless about leaving the door unlocked. Is there any chance the lock is broken?

by Anonymousreply 38November 4, 2021 2:44 AM

It's probably your super. Never give them a spare set of keys, instead give it to a trusted neighbor for entry in case of emergency. In the meantime, have the locks changed by anyone other than your super.

Has Gary Busey been spotted in your building?

by Anonymousreply 39November 4, 2021 2:48 AM

The funny thing is my last apartment was in a sketchy area visited by the police several times a week and nothing like this ever happened. I didn’t give my landlord a set of keys but I know they can get in. When they’re testing our fire alarms they give us notice of entry 48 hours before. The building is owned by a property management and more than one person works on the office.

by Anonymousreply 40November 4, 2021 3:04 AM

Check your lease and state law about whether you are allowed to change the lock yourself.

Is there anyone besides the landlord or super who may have had a key in the past? Former roommate or cleaning person? Possibly even a former tenant?

by Anonymousreply 41November 4, 2021 3:05 AM

When you exit the apartment, close the door as much as possible and place a lightweight book on the floor on the inside of the door before you lock it. Then when you come home, only open the door far enough to squeeze in. If the book is further away when you come home, you'll know someone entered while you were away.

by Anonymousreply 42November 4, 2021 3:11 AM

Link the top of the door to the door frame with a piece of tape. If the seal is broken, then you know someone entered.

by Anonymousreply 43November 4, 2021 3:15 AM

R43 good idea hunty

by Anonymousreply 44November 4, 2021 3:22 AM

You could always stay home one day and see who shows up in person. I'd douche first, but that's just me.

by Anonymousreply 45November 4, 2021 3:27 AM

It is odd, isn’t it, that whoever is entering your place is not bothering to lock the door on the way out. Why would they WANT you to know they’re going in there? It seems like they want you to know.

by Anonymousreply 46November 4, 2021 3:33 AM

I would booby trap the place, as in Home Alone.

by Anonymousreply 47November 4, 2021 3:38 AM

You're just a neurotic, Blanche.

by Anonymousreply 48November 4, 2021 3:46 AM

OP My mother in law’s apt. One of the maintenance staff was napping! Yes, get a camera.

by Anonymousreply 49November 4, 2021 3:48 AM

I would ask for your stuff, but your murderous intruder will likely take it all.

by Anonymousreply 50November 4, 2021 3:48 AM

I had an employee of the cleaning company coming to my house while I was at work to shower and do laundry. She was homeless. I felt somewhat violated but realized she was in a desperate situation and I had some compassion. I still changed my locks and fired the cleaning company without identifying who did it.

by Anonymousreply 51November 4, 2021 4:47 AM

I rent a house in a bad neighborhood and I have had the feeling people have been inside. I too have nothing, so there'so nothing to steal. But They don't know that.

I've found twisted paper clips on the porch a couple times. Certainly people in this part of town would know how to jimmy open an old door. Once the back door and screen door were both unlocked, as if someone had let themselves out.

My cats always run to the door when I come home, but a couple times they were nowhere to be found. Then they creeped out slowly, staring intently at my face.

by Anonymousreply 52November 4, 2021 6:49 AM

Step 1: Google nest cam. You will get an immediate alert on your phone when there's motion, and can speak to them thru the camera. And even if they steal the camera, you have the video and can send a clip to the police.

Step 2: change the locks

Step 3: move ASAP. A similar thing happened to me years ago in a rental apartment, only I was home when someone let themselves in with a key. I looked for a new place the next day.

by Anonymousreply 53November 4, 2021 7:00 AM

Tell the super, tell the landlord. Do what you have to do and change the lock immediately. And don't give a new key to the super or the landlord. If necessary, give a spare key to a very close friend whether the friend lives in your building or across town. Trust no one except this one close friend or family member.

You're not imagining this, someone is coming into your apartment. This is serious. Treat it as such. Some day you may walk in on the culprit and it won't be pleasant.

by Anonymousreply 54November 4, 2021 7:27 AM

OP, do you check if the door is still in the locked position before you open it to leave in the morning? Are you a heavy sleeper? Do you sleep naked? Do you sometimes wake up with an unexplained sticky or dried residue on your body? Have you been VIOLATED while you were sleeping?

by Anonymousreply 55November 4, 2021 8:47 AM

When you woke up was your shirt tucked or untucked??

by Anonymousreply 56November 4, 2021 9:11 AM

Maybe it’s the butler.

by Anonymousreply 57November 4, 2021 2:32 PM

OP please keep us updated! I love this story.

by Anonymousreply 58November 4, 2021 2:36 PM

Change your lock.

by Anonymousreply 59November 4, 2021 2:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 60November 4, 2021 2:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 67November 4, 2021 6:24 PM

Leave your apartment and sneak back without being seen. Then sit by the door and wait for someone to try to sneak in.

If there is no damage to the lock, it's someone with a key...the super or someone connected to him

by Anonymousreply 68November 4, 2021 6:25 PM

I wonder if some pervert is coming in and rubbing his naked butt on your pillow.

by Anonymousreply 69November 4, 2021 7:34 PM

It really doesn't make sense, if someone who wasn't suppose to be there was coming in while you were gone, they would lock up when they left so that you wouldn't expect anything. By leaving the door unlocked it is like someone is trying to scare you into moving out.

by Anonymousreply 70November 4, 2021 7:36 PM

OP it’s Sadie Mae Glutz - creepy crawling from the other side.

by Anonymousreply 71November 4, 2021 7:39 PM

By any chance do you have a gargoyle on your roof?

by Anonymousreply 72November 4, 2021 9:26 PM

It's from inside the apartment OP. No one is sneaking in.

by Anonymousreply 73November 4, 2021 9:55 PM

R72, meet R29.

by Anonymousreply 74November 4, 2021 11:38 PM

Hire an off duty cop to guard your door.

by Anonymousreply 75November 4, 2021 11:38 PM

The joke in r29 and r72 is so funny it bears repeating, r74.

by Anonymousreply 76November 4, 2021 11:39 PM

As I said, the super is prime suspect. Oftentimes the handymen are in on the scheme as "lookouts," and will text him in your apartment when they spot you approaching. So there's no sneaking in undetected, R68.

by Anonymousreply 77November 5, 2021 12:40 AM

R64: which device would be best for a single door apartment (or is the site for businesses only)?

by Anonymousreply 78November 5, 2021 12:45 AM

I thought maybe it was someone who didn’t work for management because if they did they’d just lock the door after. If the lock is picked they can’t lock up after they leave so that’s what I assumed must be happening.

by Anonymousreply 79November 5, 2021 12:48 AM

Your super is capable of lock-picking, OP; probably skilled.

Of course they can! If you can pick it open, you can pick it closed. Same manipulating either function.

by Anonymousreply 84November 5, 2021 1:32 AM

Get some Victure IPC650 cameras. You can configure it to not light a LED when it detects movement. Plus if it triggers an alert it sends right to your phone. They were about $39 on Amazon. Oh yeah and they can see by infrared.

by Anonymousreply 85November 5, 2021 2:28 AM

A person with a key, would want to make sure they locked back up to avoid detection. The door is being left unlocked for a reason, either to mess with the OP, or to drive them out. They aren't apparently taking anything, so the purpose is to leave the OP a message and freak them out.

by Anonymousreply 86November 5, 2021 2:29 AM

Get a cranny gam...uh....I mean, get a candy gram...

by Anonymousreply 87November 5, 2021 2:43 AM

Op do you by any chance have gay friends with the nicknames Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear?

by Anonymousreply 88November 5, 2021 2:50 AM

Oh they take "souvenirs," little things you won't notice as missing until needed, e.g. a paring knife. The freak has a cache of his purloined booty stashed away for his sick self-satisfaction.

by Anonymousreply 89November 5, 2021 3:12 AM

Don't be paranoid...but I have a true story.

My uncle was a landlord in a college town. Maybe 20 apartments, and 5 houses.

My brother and I did odd jobs, cleaning out trash, cleaning, drywall, etc.

One day my brother and I were driving around in my uncles Mercedes to do some errand, I was 13. My brother said check this out. Got out, popped the trunk, and inside were about 200 pairs of girls panties. Many used panties. It smelled.

So, yeah. Some people are fucking creeps.

by Anonymousreply 90November 5, 2021 3:15 AM

Legally, landlords are not allowed to enter a tenant's apartment without a 24 hour notice, at least here in Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 91November 5, 2021 3:20 AM

r91 Yes, legally. Illegally, it's quite common. How many landlords have been prosecuted under this law? Good way to get out of a lease.

by Anonymousreply 92November 5, 2021 3:22 AM

Rig your door with explosives when you leave.

If the building’s burned to the ground when you return, you’ll know someone went in.

by Anonymousreply 93November 5, 2021 3:30 AM

Let's scare Jessica to death.

by Anonymousreply 94November 5, 2021 3:32 AM

There are many varieties of cheap cameras available. Masterbate on the door knob when you leave in the morning. You should then have a formidable video for America's home videos.

by Anonymousreply 95November 5, 2021 3:32 AM

It’s masturbate, R95. It might help to remember U in the middle of it all.

I’ve had no drama since posting the thread. My lock is changed and I have cameras. I’ve had some strange things happen since I moved in here like a love letter slid under the door, and some cheap heart necklace from China mailed to me so I’m wondering if this is related to the apartment stuff. I thought the necklace thing was a mistake from somebody I bought something from on wish or eBay. I had two packages stolen and apparently I’m the only person in the building who has reported a theft so I won’t be getting anything delivered here. For now I’m okay.

by Anonymousreply 133November 13, 2021 2:54 AM

They used to also mail seeds to people in the US. (If you get them, you’re supposed to turn them in to the authorities, or something… not throw them away or plant them because it’s an invading species.)

It’s not a sinister plot, it’s more like an online seller scheme that benefits the sender and doesn’t really hurt anyone else (except for the invading species thing).

A love letter?

If it's someone from the apartment management they must notify you in advance if they'll need entry into your apartment when you're not home. Or if there is an emergency they can enter at any time when you're not there, but they must notify you they did enter. I doubt it's anyone with your apartment management. They'd surely know to lock the door when they left, especially if it's happened multiple times. If the locks were never changed from the last tenant it's possible that it could be the former tenant using a key they had made when they lived there.

But obviously the best solution is to get some sort of video camera set up.

It depends what your motivation is, to know what's been going on, or to put a stop to it. Had it been me, I would have installed a camera for a few weeks, and then changed the locks.

R93 If they have a gas oven and natural fiber (wool) carpet, it’s more economical / accessible to leave the gas oven on, oven door open, perhaps a small fan to help distribute the gas. Then hope for a static charge upon entry.

R46 is right, all joking aside. I was home sick from work one day and I woke up to 3 men standing in my living room yelling "Hello?". Apparently, there was an "emergency" with someone's AC in another apartment, but their AC unit was only accessible through my balcony. They were sure I was at work, so they just barged right on in without calling or giving any kind of notice or warning. That was the apartment and management company from Hell, and I broke my lease and moved. It happened over and over again. I would come home from work and my balcony door would be wide open. Fuckers.
