Crew Neck Undershirts

I wear crewneck undershirts, they've been part of my "Daddy look" since I was a kid. I like the collar to be snug around my neck and not lose its shape. Good-quality shirts are not cheap, but do other old-school undershirt-wearing DLers have another standby brand that they've found to be as good or better?

I don't like them.

First, I don't like the coolness on my upper chest. Secondly, if you have a lot of chest har, you look like an animal.

OP, I'm also obsessed with this (we must be the only 2 gays in the world) and will tell you that after trying lots pf brands, the best at keeping snugness around the neck is JOCKEY. Hanes quickly lose their shapes and the others in your poll don't even try for snugness.

I've always felt that the little frame of white under the jaw line is exceptionally flattering to a middle aged, if not older face.

$29 for a shirt that you can’t see most of?

Oh, lawdy!

From my experience, R2 is correct. Jockey seem to hold their collar shape best. Hanes are almost as bad as Fruit of the Loom (which I have found to be the worst, not counting off-brands from Walmart, Target, Marshall's, Walgreen's, etc.). Old Navy crew neck undershirts aren't that great, either. Nothing looks better under a crisp white dress shirt than a nice, white crew neck undershirt. Even if you're wearing a suit and tie. It completes the look.

R5 here. Are the JC Penney Stafford undershirts any good? If they're really only $8 each, I would give them a try. I have a problem paying $30 for an undershirt from J Crew, though.

Ralph Lauren - Polo.

Soft and thick collar that doesn’t lose its shape wash after wash. Soft as a babies ass. Not cheap. But you know the old saying; you get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get.

The Stafford JC Penney heavyweight shirt had been my go-to for years. But the company's financial woes, possible rollbacks in quality or change in manufacturers to save money, have made me think that it may be time to consider a new label.

I've totally switched to white Hane's Beefy Ts because they have a nice wide crew collar. They're about half the price or less than Brooks Brothers and Nordstrom, which are two I was wearing most recently.

I first came across them at All American Boy in the Castro a number of years ago.

You can find them online.

^I also wear a small for a snug but not too tight fit. Keeps the collar in place where it should be.

Unfortunately, this is not true these days.

Most tee shirts don't really seemed designed to sit as tightly around the neck as I like them, even when they're new. And I wear Smalls.

for white shirts, buy cheap cotton ones and replace frequently. White shirts get gross pretty quickly from sweat, sunscreen, deodorant, spills....I buy from gap factory to get the 100% cotton shirts. Comes out to $5-6 each with discounts.

I got a pack of the Nordstrom undershirts (V-neck) recently and thought they were very good quality. You might want to try them. The sizing seems like it might run large.
