Untalented performers who got ahead because of their spouse's pull
The supposed model for the archetype of this, Susan Alexander, Marion Davies, the mistress of William Randolph Hearst (the undisputed model for Charles Foster Kane), actually only sort of applies: most film critics agree that she was genuinely a fine comedienne in the silents she made before Hearst formed Cosmopolitan Pictures mostly for starring vehicles for her, which unfortunately were dramatic historical pictures (because Hearst loved to see her in period costume) in which she was incompetent
Better examples might be:
*Vera Hruba Ralston, married to the Republic studio chief, who could speak English almost only phonetically
*Barbara Bosson, unlovely and untalented wife of powerful TV producer Steve Bochco
*Sherri Moon Zombie, wife of Rob Zombie

The misunderstood Marion Davies was a gifted actress and comedienne in silent and early sound movies. It's true that her powerful patron Hearst wanted her to be seen as a great actress in dramatic roles, but she resisted his efforts and retired from the screen early to take care of him. She was highly regarded in Hollywood society and was quite active on the social scene until her death.

Sheila Allen, who always got a dramatic monologue in one of hubby Irwin Allen's disaster pics.
To that list, add Selma Archerd, wife of Variety columnist Army Archerd. A part for Selma meant a mention in Army's column.

I really want to say Sondra Locke, but she was actually good in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. So why did she suck out loud in Clint's movies?

Hillary Clinton is a good one. Strangely considered the presumptive next Democratic POTUS in wating for over a decade despite having never won a competitive election or even holding elected office until after she was FLOTUS.

Marion Davies carried Hearst financially, not the other way around.
She was already a big success before he tried to guide her career. I just watched one of her fun early talkies, "Blondie of the Follies". It's basically a silent film in its style, but with plenty of dialogue and a very good cast. Marion is wonderful.

Norma Shearer was already a star before she married Thalberg. And she was good in Silent and Pre-Code movies.
Don't judge her solely on The Women, which was a thankless sapppy role that she didn't want to do in the first place. Her movies before and after, Marie Antoinette and Escape, are great classics.

Shearer was a star but not the biggest. Without Thalberg she never would've been the first choice for all the studio's most prestigious roles.

Absolutely. He was the driving force behind their initial stardom, and wrote some of their songs together and also put together their act and then put together their TV show. Cher was only able to go off on her own after he had established them twice as stars.

r32 if you watch THE CAT IN THE HAT (or pieces of it, its unwatchable as a movie and mind boggling/incredible for a few scenes at a time due to the visuals), Kelly Preston is the only actor in that movie who seems to understand the movie they're making. She was an OK actress.

That is an excellent joke, Courtney @R59! Thank you for coming to DL!
Now, seriously, it's impossible not to laugh at the nonsense written above. Courtney cannot sing AT ALL, herr only good songs were co-written by Billy Corgan, Linda Perry and Charlotte Caffey, she's a barely passable actress and she's always been a hideous freak - the plastic surgery hasn't made her anywhere near pretty.
The only things she has ever achieved are marrying Court Cobain, playing herself in The People vs. Larry Flynt and surviving the insane amounts of drugs that she's pumped into her body. At this point in time, she's probably immune to every disease known to mankind (especially the venereal ones) thanks to all the chemicals in her blood.
Now that we're mentioning untalented people whose significant others made their careers, I nominate Jennifer Lopez - she was a second rate actress destined to have a merely passable career, but she then started fucking that clown P Diddy and he turned her into a music star, which in turn raised her acting profile.
