Joan Rivers Biopic Series Cancelled

[post redacted because linking to dailymail.co.uk clearly indicates that the poster is either a troll or an idiot (probably both, honestly.) Our advice is that you just ignore this poster but whatever you do, don't click on any link to this putrid rag.]

Sarah Silverman is just jealous nobody asked her to play Joan (not that she would've been remotely capable of it). Joan wouldn't have given a fuck whether or not a Jew was playing her in a movie.

This is the only thing that matters.
[bold]Rivers' daughter Melissa Rivers, 53, currently controls her mother's life rights, but she didn't give the series permission to use any of the comic's material.[/bold]

From Variety:
The project, called “The Comeback Girl,” was announced last month in Variety. It had been in development at Showtime, and was to be produced by Warner Bros. Television, Atlas Entertainment and Berlanti Productions. Hahn was attached as its star and executive producer, and Greg Berlanti was going to direct and executive produce the series, which was based on a spec script by Cosmo Carlson.
[bold]Yet Rivers’ life rights, which are held by her daughter, Melissa Rivers, hadn’t been secured by producers. The project could have proceeded as an unauthorized venture, but “The Comeback Girl” wouldn’t have been able to use any of Rivers’ jokes or catchphrases, and, of course, risked running afoul of Melissa Rivers and the estate.[/bold]
The limited series was set during a precarious time in Joan Rivers’ life: primarily in the aftermath of the cancellation of her late-night talk show on Fox, “The Late Show.” That period coincided with the death by suicide of Rivers’ husband (and “Late Show” producer) Edgar Rosenberg — Melissa Rivers’ father.
The logline for “The Comeback Girl” was: “Trailblazer. Adored. Cruel. Diva. Joan Rivers had a life like no other. At age 54, she was a superstar comedienne…and then it all fell apart. THE COMEBACK GIRL is the awe-inspiring untold story of how Joan Rivers persevered through near suicide and professional abyss to rebuild herself and her career to become a global icon.”
As for whether Melissa Rivers has any plans for biographical stories about her mother, who died at age 81 after living an extraordinary life, her spokesperson said there’s nothing to be announced yet.
After Variety broke the news of Hahn — who is not Jewish — as Rivers, the subject of non-Jewish actors playing Jewish characters was taken up by the likes of journalists on Twitter, Time magazine and Sarah Silverman on her podcast, who called the issue one of “Jewface.” Now that this project is dead, those debates will be tabled until the next season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Watch Melissa try to play the role herself. She probably thinks this will be the thing that finally makes her a star!

by Anonymousreply 4October 27, 2021 2:58 AM

Hey a girl has to eat and it's not like Melissa Rosenberg has ever made a penny in her entire life that her mother had nothing to do with.

by Anonymousreply 5October 27, 2021 2:59 AM

The headline of this post is a lie. It was canceled because they couldn't secure the rights to Joan Rivers story from her daughter.

by Anonymousreply 6October 27, 2021 3:00 AM

Is Fashion Police on DVD yet?

by Anonymousreply 7October 27, 2021 3:08 AM

Melissa wouldn't have cared is the lead were Jewish. However, she does care very much if the production company hadn't secured the rights to give Melissa a huge amount of money.

by Anonymousreply 8October 27, 2021 3:09 AM

Why on earth did they announce the project before buying the rights?!

by Anonymousreply 9October 27, 2021 3:12 AM

What r1 said. Silverman is a bitter hag with a career that's pretty dead. Joan couldn't have given a fuck what religion the actress who played her was.

by Anonymousreply 10October 27, 2021 3:13 AM

You have to own the rights to use things a person said?

That sounds odd. So if you quote a president like JFK and use one of his quotes you have to get the families rights?

by Anonymousreply 11October 27, 2021 3:23 AM

Sarah Silverman is that powerful? Because she was the ONLY one complaining.

by Anonymousreply 12October 27, 2021 3:38 AM
Sarah Silverman is that powerful? Because she was the ONLY one complaining.

No, as R6 said, OP's headline is a lie and R1 ran with that lie.

Joan Rivers was Jewish?

by Anonymousreply 14October 27, 2021 8:50 PM

Joan has probably phoned upstairs that she wants the starring role, but is currently waiting for her Passport from Hell to be approved.

by Anonymousreply 15October 28, 2021 2:30 AM

Joan was a Jew r15 dear. No hell for her.

by Anonymousreply 16October 28, 2021 2:31 AM

Joan and Melissa already made a (rather distavorous) movie about themselves and this time period.
