One cup of Newman's Own black tea with milk every morning. Some evenings I'll make a cup of Earl Grey, or Sleepytime. I'll occasionally have a cup of coffee, but coffee does weird and non-wonderful things to my gastrointestinal system.
Back when I smoked, a cup of coffee and a ciggie would clean out the pipes every time.

I drink cold tea throughout the day. i only like Great Eastern Sun Haiku Japanese organic green tea - about a half teaspoon of white powdered stevia to a pitcher - I steep 5 bags per gallon for an hour (or more) and then stir in the stevia - then chill overnight. I probably drink a gallon every other day (I'm retired)
Great stuff. It's spoiled me for any other drink - except morning coffee.

Earl Grey used to be the only kind of tea I enjoyed. I drank green tea for health reasons but never liked it - bitter and grassy. Then I found a brand of organic Japanese green tea (on Amazon of all places - and there is a LOT of overpriced shit tea on Amazon so I either got lucky or found the over-priced shit tea I happen to love) and it's delicious. I drink it almost every day. No bitterness, just smooth, slightly sweet and sometimes there's a whisper of a weird creamy savouriness. Just a whisper.
Also recently tried Chinese white tea for the first time and it was wonderful. Am going to place an order with a Chinese tea company and try a few different types. Have even begun googling that technique they use (I forget the name, the rebrewing multiple times).
No milk or sugar ever. I bring shame upon my English ancestors.

r39 i came on this thread to say TJ's Irish Breakfast as well! I generally don't add milk or cream to it (because i usually don't have those things handy) but 1 1/2 spoons sugar. sometimes i'll mix it up with honey but honey doesn't seem to distribute very well throughout the cup and i'll get to the bottom of the cup with too sweet tea. I like my tea very strong so sometimes i'll use 2 teabags as well.
Somebody upthread said something about using powdered milk and i never thought of that and may try it!

It’s not worth having tea if you are in a cafe, restaurant or hotel anywhere except the U.K. and Ireland because the tea is generally vile. I drink black tea. I am currently drinking a nice Assam organic tea from the Banaspaty plantation in India. And I also like a darjeeling tea from Makaibari estate in India. It is free trade and organic, but I learned about it from a German novel. Very flowery and lighter. Still looking for the perfect Ceylon tea.
I've drunk herbal teas at various times, as well as green teas. I have not been in the mood for these for a few years now.

I’ve been enjoying tea for decades and always like to “mix things up” a bit by switching between Keemun, Jasmine Pearls, Darjeeling, Oolong, scented blends, Lapsang Suchong, White Tea, and herbal infusions, including Rooibus. All great stuff, and different styles and flavors to match mood, food, and season.
That said, my current go-to is a variety I just learned about 2-3 years ago: Puerh Tea. It’s a Black Tea (considered Red Tea) in China and is BEYOND AMAZING! Basically, it is to other teas what wine is to grape juice. It’s fermented and aged into a deep, rich, earthy cup of complex and comforting flavor.
I recently scored a few bricks of 60-year-old Puerh (it’s older than I am!) and thoroughly enjoy drinking it. It can (should!) be steeped multiple times, and pots #3 and #4 are my favorite steepings.
Here’s a really good (but long) article about Puerh Tea. It’s definitely worth a read!

by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 23, 2021 4:10 PM |
In preparing a good pot or cup of tea, a number of factors need to be taken into consideration: 1. Variety of tea (I.e. black, green, white, oolong, etc.); 2. The amount of tea leaves used in the process (teaspoon, 1.5 teaspoons, etc.); 3. Water temperature; and, 4. Steeping time.
The amount of tea and the steeping time are somewhat interchangeable, and I’ve found that I prefer using a larger quantity of leaves and shortening the steeping time. This way you can steep the leaves multiple times and get a different experience with each successive brewing.
Here’s a handy guide for the water temperatures and approximate steeping times for a number of different tea varieties:

Sencha and genmaicha hot and pretty much anything turned into a cold beverage. Any green, black, mint, chamomile or rose hip / hibiscus or any fruit tea really will work for a cold beverage for me... as long as it's sweetened enough that it isn't insipid tasting and there's some kind of acidic component to prevent it from tasting cloyingly sweet.

I drink tea all day and night. In the morning I throw an herbal tea bag in my water bottle - even though the water is cold, the tea flavors it nicely. I switch between Celestial Seasonings ginger + probiotics, peppermint, and Twinings Winter Spice, though lately I'm addicted to Celestial Seasonings Vermont Maple Ginger. I refill the water as needed throughout the day and the tea bag stays in the whole time. At night I make a huge 34 ounce Bubba mug of tea - two tea bags of chamomile that I steep for at least half an hour, then I add a decaf Earl Grey for five minutes. I add nothing to the cold water bottle tea but for my evening tea I add lots of oat milk and agave nectar. I like it sweet and extra milky - I don't care what tea "gatekeepers" say, take your tea the way you like!

I confess to being a total tea snob. Tea is made only from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. All these modern flowery things are just herbal infusions. With variations in growing region, productions, fermentation, etc. there are many varieties of actual tea. On a daily basis I drink Assam in the morning and Darjeeling in the afternoon. At night I drink oolong or a green tea with aromatic jasmine. No sugar or milk, ever. When brewed properly, tea has magnificent flavor and a natural sweetness. Because I am either an Eldergay or a Bitter Old Queen (depending on who you talk to) I turn up my nose at the sweetened, milky messes that are being foisted on people nowadays. Just as a caramel macchiato isn't a cup of coffee, Sleepytime is not a cup of tea. Sugary drinks are for children.
Now get off my lawn!

[R41], with the constant cry of England having become a nanny state, your comment about using powdered milk in tea suddenly brought me to a scintillating vision of you sitting on a bench on Hampstead Heath on a lovely sunny arvo, not bothering anybody, reading a well used copy of the rare Diana, Princess of Wales autobiography (the BRF stopped its printing but a few copies were already sent to book reviewers) "Boy! What Love Has Done to Me," when you're approached by a stern looking woman (think Sandra Bernhard's manager in the film 'Without You I'm Nothing'), who whips out a Tesco Express notepad size pocket notebook (on her salary she can't afford Smythson, although it's on her Christmas Wishlist every year), and in a loud and self important voice tells you that you are presently in violation of XX Council By Law A36-93.123 paragraph two wh. clearly states that it is a misdemeanour punishable by up to nine years of hard labour for using powdered milk in your tea.

[quote] powdered milk in tea
That is perfectly fine.
On the condition that the powdered milk is reconstituted a couple of hours beforehand.
(Reconstituted powdered milk is a thrifty, ecological alternative to purchasing milk in bulky, plastic bottles)

I throw the powdered milk right into the tea and like it that way just fine.

I drink two, 10-oz. cups of green tea every day.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | October 26, 2021 10:32 PM |
I like TAZO Wild Orange herbal tea.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | October 26, 2021 10:33 PM |
Tea is too weak.
I can only drink it in the heat of summer with milk and sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | October 26, 2021 10:34 PM |
I drink Tetley original throughout the day, if just making a cup. Around once a week though, I treat myself to a pot of Damman Frères Mélange Anglais Supériere, which is just delicious.
I like fruit tea occasionally, especially peach tea from Twinings.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | October 26, 2021 10:42 PM |
In the summer, I make Harney & Sons mint ice tea & sweeten with a bit of simple syrup flavored with crushed blueberries & mint leaves. Just adds a nice amount of sweetness & flavor

r71 I bought some Puerh tea online after reading your post, but it just tastes like regular black tea, to me. Maybe I got gypped for buying tea on Amazon instead of getting the real deal like you had
I discovered thyme tea last year. It is amazing for sore throat and digestion issues. Its also a good choice when you want tea but prefer less sweet or flowery flavors.

Cold/bottled: Ito En Oi Ocha unsweetened green tea
Hot/loose tea: Dragon pearl jasmine

Chamomile tea with soy milk and a ton of Stevia
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 27, 2021 12:49 AM |
A side note about Stevia. Amazing in tea, but terrible in coffee. I can only use sugar in coffee. I guess the bitterness in the coffee does not go well with the Stevia

Don't buy tea on Amazon. I know very little and am not even close to an expert and even I could tell that 99% of the tea I bought from Amazon (when I went on a buying spree before I knew what I was doing) was shite. It's almost all low quality. See the link for some good places to buy tea online.

Coca leaf tea really does help with altitude sickness.

R133 - Here is an excellent and reasonably priced Puerh that is shipped directly from China. It took almost two months for it to be delivered when I ordered it the first time, but the second order arrived within a few weeks.

My favorite is Earl Grey, but I also drink English and Irish breakfast teas. Years ago I also drank Oolong and Lapsong Souchoung (spelling?), but I gave them up because I'm down to a cup a day, I drink with milk. I buy Twining's because it's the only half-decent tea in my grocery store although years ago I really loved Taylor's. I am intrigued by some of the teas that have been discussed on this thread, and hope to try a few.
Unfortunately, green tea does something to me that, after only a minute or two of brewing time, I will easily be up 30+ hours, unable to sleep.

[quote] Where to Buy Amazing Tea Online
There's nothing amazing about tea.
It is merely hot water tainted with the odour of a dead plant.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 27, 2021 3:07 AM |
Just organic matcha green tea from Jeju. I stopped drinking Japanese green tea because of the radiation from Fukushima. I also drink organic oolong and organic white tea, both from Fujian.

I like tea but it makes me throw up for some reason. Recently I've bought the Mighty Leaf vanilla black tea. On impulse I bought some Republic of Tea pumpkin spice tea. It's good. Neither of those teas has an overpowering flavor.

Does anyone know where online that I could purchase the little containers that hold individually wrapped teas? The ceramic-type containers that can sit on tables like the packaged sugars in a cafe?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | October 27, 2021 6:57 AM |
R149 - Google “Tea Bag Caddy Holder” and take your pick!
by Anonymous | reply 150 | October 27, 2021 9:18 AM |
I read somewhere that the material used for tea bags releases all these little plastic (?) materials into your tea & that you're better off drinking loose leaf tea
by Anonymous | reply 151 | October 27, 2021 9:31 AM |
Fun fact: Twinings Prince of Wales tea was specially created for the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII, even later Duke of Windsor) in 1921. It's as weak and wishy washy as he was.
The taste of loose tea prepared in a china/ceramic teapot is vastly superior to the bagged rubbish. But after 30+ years of scrubbing tea stains out of the teapot, fuck that shit, I'll suffer with the bagged rubbish.

Don't care for hot tea at all. I love iced tea. Nothing exotic. Just plain ol' Tetley Iced Tea Blend.
I well remember back in the early 70s when a family moved into our neighborhood from Pennsylvania, and I became friends with their two twin brothers. They came to lunch one day and as usual iced tea was served. They both immediately asked for some milk which was obliged. They took the milk and poured it into their iced tea and drank it down. I almost puked.

I like this Canadian brand, David's. They have an advent calendar that is great for sampling 24 different varieties of their tea.

You know how it's traditional in some cultures to drink coffee while holding a sugar cube in your teeth?
I drink tea while chewing on goji berries. It's fantastic. Oolong, green, white, pu'erh, Yunnan black (Chinese breakfast, etc.). All organic, but not particularly expensive. My palate isn't really that refined.
Or I just add some monkfruit sweetener to it. Whole Foods has several brands, but I go with their monkfruit-erythritol blend. I find stevia and stevia-erythritol too "tinny" tasting (saccharine being the most "tinny" or metallic to me).

I go to the farmer's market and get green and white teas from China. Some are $100/pound, but the tea is so dry and light, you can get a decent size container for $5.
I really enjoy them in the afternoon.

R164, if he hadn't done it, someone else would have. The British East India Company was truly reprehensible, but tea would not have lasted in India if it didn't have the topography to support the crop. Additionally, India made its own modifications to the product making it different than Chinese varieties.

I order from a good American purveyor. My favorite lately is an Indian Assam (properly C. sinensis var. assamica), but I switch to a Darjeeling for brightness, Lapsang Souchong when I want the smoke, and Oolong when I want something subtle.

Always stick with organic, if possible.
Careful with the big brands: Lipton, Tetley, and Twinings. All of them have very high pesticide levels.
[quote] CBC’s research found multiple chemicals in eight out of 10 popular brands of green and black tea. Half the teas contained pesticide levels in excess of allowable limits. Tetley, Lipton and Twinings, brands popular with Australians, were among those highest in pesticide contamination.
Indian teas have particularly high prevalences and concentrations of pesticides.
[quote] About 94 per cent of 49 Indian tea brands tested by Greenpeace contained pesticide residues, and 59 per cent contained at least one pesticide above the Maximum Residue Levels set by the EU.
I stick with organic green and white tea.
